On their fourth deployment, Longview firefighters fight wildfires across the state It's been a busy summer for the Longview Fire Department. Their crews have been deployed all across the state as drought-like conditions have set Texas ablaze. Craig Barton is a Longview firefighter paramedic and Hallsville fire chief. Barton recently returned from a 15-day deployment. "Since December, I have been out on three deployments," Barton said. Kevin May, Longview fire marshal, said firefighters deployed for either wildland firefighting or water rescue must first learn the ropes. "All these guys go through extensive training for that discipline and then they get accepted to be part of these deployable teams," May said. The four firefighters available for deployment, hop in the booster truck and head to their next destination. "All four of us in there, (have) everything we need to live with for 14 days and a bag," Barton said. KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 LONGVIEW Body found at fire scene in Fannin County Police are investigating after skeletal human remains were found Friday at the scene of a 75-acre wildfire north of Savoy in Fannin County. The Bonham Fire Department said the discovery was made as firefighters were working to contain the flames. Savoy police investigators believe the victim may be Jesse Hagood, 37, who has been missing since August 3, 2021 when his vehicle was found crashed near the fire scene. "You see him, and then a couple hours later you never see him again; I hate that," said Hagood's friend Jeremy Hickerson. "Nobody thinks this could happen, especially in a little town like this. We only got 800 people here." Hickerson said he grew up and went to school with Hagood, adding that he was an outgoing and friendly person. "There was never somebody that he wouldn't go up to and talk to. Everybody just loved him," Hickerson said. KTEN-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 10 SHERMAN Texas grass fires have firefighters rethinking approach Dry conditions and grass fires have been a thorn in the side of fire departments all across the Lone Star State, leaving many to re-evaluate their resources. Balch Springs Fire Marshal Sean Davis has held that title since 2017. Before that, he spent countless years being a firefighter in this Dallas County community. However, in all of Davis' years, he's never dealt with a grass fire like the late-July ones that affected 26 homes, leaving several destroyed. "Frankly, nobody has seen anything of that significance and size," Davis said. When combating grass fires, Davis says they heavily rely on a duster, which is a pickup truck that can easily travel off-road, getting firefighters and water where it's needed. Since the BSFD only had one duster, Davis says crews struggled to put out the grass fires that were quickly spreading. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 Report gives new details in arson at Lubbock Schlotzky's An offense report by the Lubbock Fire Marshal's Office offered new details on an arson at a Schlotzky's location in Lubbock on August 1. According to the report, there were two separates fires set. One was in the kitchen and the other was in the owner's office. The owners provided an image of a ransom note left by a suspect during a previous burglary in July to Everything Lubbock. The note said $5,000 cash must be left on a desk. "If you don't you'll regret it," the note said. The owner said he believes the person who left the ransom note also set the fires. The offense report said "lightweight combustibles" were used as fuel for the kitchen fire. The fire began in the west part of the kitchen and spread. Stacked folders and paperwork was used as fuel in the office fire, according to the report. KAMC-TV ABC 28 LUBBOCK Blanco County first responders promote preparedness for fires Nearly a week after it broke out, firefighters took full control of the 1,210-acre Smoke Rider Fire on Monday. In Blanco County, there are only a few full-time firefighters. According to Blanco County ESD 2 EMS Chief Ben Oakley, this took a toll on his team. "To say they're fatigued would be an understatement," he said. "They've been working a lot of hours for nearly a week now." Oakley also said they are not normally responding to such large fires. "The fires that we're seeing are rapidly growing in terms of complexity, size and loss," Oakley said. To combat these fast-moving fires, first responders are encouraging their communities to become Firewise. It's a nationwide program run through the National Fire Protection Association that helps neighborhoods get ready and react in case a wildfire ever breaks out in their area. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Madison County pasture fire 100 percent contained Multiple crews responded to a Madison County pasture fire. The fire was 150 acres, and has been 100 percent contained as of 9:08 p.m. Monday. The Madison County Sheriff's Office posted on social media Monday night that the public should avoid the area of Bundic Road, Blagraves Road, FM-39, FM-2865 and FM-1452 West – in the North Zulch area. The North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department – along with multiple units from Madisonville Fire/Rescue, Normangee VFD, Hilltop Lakes VFD, Iola VFD, Bedias VFD, Brazos County VFD Districts, Bryan Fire Department, Bryan Fire Marshal, Texas Forestry Service, bulldozers, Madison County maintainer and aircraft – battled a large pasture fire, along with structures. North Zulch VFD Auxilary was on scene providing drinks and meals to first responders. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Major transformer in Massachusetts explodes, generating huge fireball A Lexington transformer exploded Monday afternoon, sparking a three-alarm fire and sending those in the area running for cover, according to Lexington Fire Department. "I saw this big poof of smoke and then boom, big orange fireball," said witness Alexandra Schweitzer. The explosion happened just before 6:00 p.m. at an Eversource substation on Massachusetts Avenue. "Power turned off in the building for a brief second, followed by a few loud explosions. I immediately went in the kitchen and turned off the gas," said Sorabh Kapoor, owner of Clay Oven Restaurant. Firefighters rushed to the scene working to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings, fighting the blaze in over 90-degree heat. "The volume of fire you dealt with is maybe one or two alarms worth of fire, but we brought in three," said Lexington Fire Department Chief Derek Sencabaugh. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON Making a difference: 67-year-old becomes Virginia volunteer firefighter With firefighter shortages emerging in Bedford County, one man decided he wanted to get involved in the action, regardless of his age. Rusty Mansel recently received his "Firefighter 1" course completion certificate at the age of 67 from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and the Virginia Fire Services Board, all with no prior firefighting experience. Mansel retired five years ago, but before he started his new role with the Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, he says he volunteered with the local search and rescue team, which is when he began to notice emergency responder shortages. "There's just not that many volunteers, so after a couple of years of doing that, I asked my chief, I said, ‘what do I need to do to help more?' And he said, ‘well, I need you to take Firefighter 1,'" Mansel said. WFXR-TV FOX 27 ROANOKE Inside the efforts to rescue a veteran firefighter who became trapped when house in Michigan collapsed VIDEO: A Detroit firefighter was trapped for hours as other firefighters rushed to get him out after a home collapsed. No major injuries were reported. Detroit firefighters believed they were dealing with a suspected serial arsonist. The same crew had been called to three vacant houses on West Hollywood Avenue just that week. On July 28, there was another fire the crew had under control from the outside. Then three veteran firefighters from the crew went inside to check for hot spots and to see if any people were inside. Local 4 investigators were told the first floor was dangerously unstable. The three firefighters were checking out the second level when they heard a crack. The floor collapsed right out from under them, all three falling down to the first floor. WDIV-TV NBC 4 DETROIT Retired Firefighters in Washington State ‘Keep Tradition Alive' Through Makeshift Museum PHOTOS: In a garage near Littlerock sits the second firetruck to ever be used by Olympia firefighters, among other decommissioned trucks, gear and most importantly, a couple dozen firefighters who have worked to create this makeshift museum. Retired firefighters continued to trickle in throughout the late morning. On their badges, Tumwater, West Thurston, Olympia, Seattle and beyond are represented. Despite being from all different places, the conversation was flowing as easily as the coffee. The "living museum," as it is referred to by West Thurston Fire Authority Chief Robert Scott, was organized by Larry Dibble, former Olympia fire chief, who said his mission statement for the place is to "keep tradition alive." It is hosted by property owner Ray McDonald, also an alumnus of Olympia Fire. THE CHRONICLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
