North Zulch firefighters remember colleague killed in weekend crash Early Sunday morning the North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle collision on FM 1372 near North Zulch. "Firemen arrived there. They found one vehicle left the road and struck the tree. They commenced to pulling the victim out to do CPR, and then we realized it was one of our firemen," said North Zulch Fire Chief Tony Clay. He said Amber Alewine was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive. She was 44-years-old and lived in North Zulch with her 9-year-old son Jeremiah. Chief Clay said she was someone who could always be counted on. "With being a secretary of the North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department, and her being a single parent with one son, she was able to juggle that into fulfilling our needs 200%," said Clay. KBTX-TV CHANNEL 3 BRYAN Official: Fatal House Fire in Pharr Appears to be Accidental A house fire in Pharr claimed the life of a person Saturday; another remains in critical condition. Fire Chief Lenny Perez says a mattress caught on fire in one of the bedrooms. Two men tried to put out the fire by taking it to the bathroom, but they got caught inside. "We always teach that when you find a fire inside your residence, close the door to that bedroom, or room, that it's confined to. That way you starve the fire a little bit and let the professionals come in and turn off the fire. Vacate the residence more than anything else," explained Perez. Jose Luis Chavez, III died in the fire. The other man is being hospitalized at a burn center in San Antonio. Perez says they're still investigating how the mattress caught on fire, but the cause appears to be accidental. Officials will continue to investigate the cause of the fire. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Jacksonville's only female firefighter celebrates 20 years with the department For twenty years, Alicia Whetsell has served the Jacksonville community as the city's first, and only, female firefighter. Whetsell joined the department on December 19, 1999, then only 20 years old and a single mother. While there were hardships, she says her early service, especially her first year, was positive. "It was kind of a roller coaster at first, but a good one," Whetsell explained. Jay Hooker, now a retired captain with the fire department, remembers when Whetsell first started. "Came to us as a single mom with a child, beautiful little girl, and we just took her right in, dug around and you know, she just became immediate family," Hooker explained. The department rallied around Whetsell, who helped her find her place within the department. KYTX-TV CBS 19 TYLER Dallas Has Been Dispatching Social Workers to Some 911 Calls. It's Working. Last year, Dallas' police and fire departments teamed up with Parkland Hospital to rethink how they responded to 911 calls involving mental health crises. They placed a social worker inside the dispatch center to triage calls and sent out a special team staffed with a mental health professional whenever possible. They targeted South Central Dallas, the area with the highest concentration of mental health-related calls. The hope was that social workers could handle these cases without relying on the city's overcrowded emergency rooms and jails. The results have been promising. In 2019, the volume of psych patients at Parkland's ER rose 30%. But the trend has largely been reversed in areas covered by the program, which is called RIGHT Care. The number of psych patients arriving from those areas dropped by 20%. DALLAS OBSERVER Medical call in Orange escalates quickly when first responders notice home is on fire A medical call to a home on Carpenters Place in Orange quickly escalated when first responders noticed the home was on fire. This happened around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. When firefighters came to help the ambulance with the call and were treating the patient, they found the house was also on fire, according the Joe Mires Orange Fire Battalion Chief. He tells 12News firefighters put the fire out quickly. Sadly, a man at the home died. According to Chief Mires, the fire was not the cause of death. The two people who lived in the home had no apparent injuries from the fire itself. The official cause of death is not known at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Indiana council bucks mayor, votes to return to former schedule for firefighters The City Council supported city firefighters Monday night and voted to roll back unpopular work shift changes the mayor imposed last weekend. Council members passed — by an 8-1 vote on first reading — an ordinance that would return firefighters to a work schedule of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off. Councilwoman Gilda Orange cast the lone dissenting vote. More than 100 fire union members of East Chicago and surrounding communities packed the meeting and applauded the council's action. Mayor Anthony Copeland is expected to veto the measure if council members pass it on second and final reading. They next meet Dec. 23. Copeland didn't make an appearance Monday, but Fire Chief Anthony Serna did to warn council members against taking the union's part in this labor dispute. "It is not a benefit to anyone," Serna said. NORTHWEST TIMES Sculpture for Fallen Massachusetts Firefighter Unveiled on One Year Anniversary The city's third memorial sculpture for a firefighter who died in the line of duty was unveiled Monday evening at the Webster Square Fire Station. Dignitaries, fellow firefighters and family members stood for an hour in the cold rain to honor Firefighter Christopher J. Roy of Shrewsbury, 36, who died a year ago, after he was pulled from a burning apartment at 7 Lowell St. The bronze sculpture depicts folded turnout gear topped by a helmet for Ladder 4, next to an ax with its blade downward, the word, "Perseverance" engraved on the handle. After its unveiling, the memorial will be put away over the winter and then permanently sited at the station after landscaping can be done in the spring. Support for the sculpture and perpetual care and maintenance of the city's other firefighter memorials was provided through a $20,000 donation from the Kraft Family Foundation to the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, to establish the Worcester Fire Department Memorials Care Fund. WORCESTER TELEGRAM Three Ohio Firefighters Terminated for Hazing Three firefighters were terminated Monday after an investigation found they verbally and physically abused a part-time firefighter. The allegations came to light in September; today the Orange Township trustees voted to accept the recommendations of investigators who said a firefighter, a lieutenant, and a captain should lose their jobs. Terminated today were: Brad Belville, a firefighter/paramedic; Lt. David Martin; and Capt. John Hodges. The investigation found the abuse happened at Orange Township Fire Station 361 on Gooding Blvd. The part-time firefighter, who we are not naming, requested a transfer from Station 361, which led to the investigation. Interviews with firefighters found "hazing and bullying was occurring against (the firefighter) by other firefighters," according to investigation reports. WSYX-TV ABC 6 Grandmother, grandson, dog rescued after Maryland firefighters sent to wrong address, wrong city On Monday Montgomery County Police released new information on what led a 911 dispatcher to send firefighters to the wrong house in the wrong city during a fire. The trouble happened on Friday night when a fire began at 2005 Prichard Road in Wheaton. Police say the 911 dispatcher misunderstood the person who called and sent firefighters to 2005 Piccard Drive in Rockville – 10 miles away from the actual fire. Per a police timeline released Monday, the firefighters were sent at 10:21 p.m. At 10:25, they arrived at the Rockville home only to discover there was no fire. The 911 operator then asked the caller to repeat the address, realized it was actually the Wheaton home, and dispatched firefighters there at 10:27. Police say the firefighters arrived four minutes later. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue says after arriving they rescued a grandmother and her adult grandson. WJLA-TV ABC 7 Cal Fire engineer used own experiences to get fellow first responders counseling Richard Wilson was sitting in a hotel hot tub with his two young sons when he heard the scream. It was the kind of scream that any parent knows, he said, and he leapt into action. Leaving his kids with his wife, he ran to the edge of the Huntington Beach pool where a mother had just spotted her 4-year-old son, Hudson, motionless on the bottom. The mother jumped in and brought her son up to the surface. Clearly panicked and distraught, she handed him to Wilson. "When she gave him to me, he was blue in the face, had no pulse and was limp as can be," said Wilson. "His pupils were unresponsive. Mentally, I'm thinking that blue is better than gray, but there were no real signs of life." Immediately, Wilson's training kicked in and he began CPR. He avoided breaths and only performed chest compressions due to the likelihood of water in Hudson's lungs. As a fire apparatus engineer for the Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, emergency calls are all in a day's work for Wilson. THE UNION PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
