| 2 Killed in Small Plane Crash Near Texas 360 in Grand Prairie VIDEO: Two people were killed when a small plane crashed along the Texas 360 service road in Grand Prairie Monday afternoon. The plane took off from Grand Prairie Municipal Airport at 2:45 p.m. Monday and crashed approximately five minutes later, according to Grand Prairie Fire Chief Robert Fite. The plane was headed north when it hit a utility pole near the service road for northbound Texas 360 near East Mayfield Road, near a Sonic restaurant. The aircraft then hit the ground and struck a nearby pickup truck, where it then caught fire, Fite said. Both people on board the plane were killed. Further information hasn't been released about the victims. A person inside the truck was treated for minor injuries. No one else was injured. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Fite said the plane originally left Denton earlier in the day, before landing in Grand Prairie. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Ammunition in burning shed creates dangerous situation for firefighters in Bexar County Firefighters battling a fire in a shed in far south Bexar County had to stand up to more than just danger from the flames and smoke. They also were met by ammunition exploding inside that burning shed. A Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy was the first to arrive at the scene on Black Powder near Wilted Oak shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday. He said he saw large flames coming from the back portion of the property and could hear ammunition going off inside the shed. Firefighters soon arrived and began knocking down the flames. It took nearly an hour to put out the fire. At one point, they were concerned that it might spread to a home near the shed. Firefighters evacuated everyone from the home as a precaution. They ultimately were able to keep the fire from spreading, and no injuries were reported. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Austin Fire Department responds to ammonia leak at University of Texas building The Austin Fire Department responded to the University of Texas campus Monday afternoon for an ammonia leak. The Hazmat Taskforce was sent to 200 East Dean Keeton Street around 4:12 p.m., according to AFD. That's the location of the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering. UT said the situation is all clear. At 4:30 p.m., the school said a small ammonia leak was found and contained. Austin Fire crews allowed people to reenter the building. UT said there is no ongoing threat to the area or campus. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN No Injuries Reported After Fire at Homeless Camp in East Fort Worth A homeless camp is damaged after it caught fire in East Fort Worth on Tuesday morning, officials say. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, units responded to an outside fire behind the Quickway gas station located at 6635 Randol Mill Road shortly before 4 a.m. Officials said they do not know how the fire started, but many of the residents use generators to keep warm on cold nights. According to fire officials, between 50 and 60 people typically stay at the homeless camp every night. No one was injured in the blaze, officials said. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH North Texas firefighters share excitement and concern about being first to get COVID-19 vaccine this week Many fire departments across Texas will be receiving their vaccine distribution this week, including a handful in North Texas. Fire Departments in Cleburne, Flower Mound, Arlington, McKinney and Farmers Branch will all get vaccine shots at some point this week. The Cleburne Fire Department is getting 500 Moderna COVID-19 vaccination shots Thursday. Fire Chief Scott Lail said a key reason his firefighters are a part of "Tier 1" distribution is they also serve Cleburne as paramedics. "To be a Cleburne firefighter, you're required to go to and retain your paramedic certification," Lail said. Cheif Lail contracted COVID-19 about a month ago, having a fever for a short period of time and body aches for a day or two. He still can't taste or smell at times. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Downtown Austin's Iconic Central Fire Station Considers a Careful Upgrade PHOTOS: Dating back to 1938, the New Deal-financed Austin Central Fire Station No. 1 sitting at 401 East Fifth Street on the northwest corner of Brush Square is an unlikely gem of downtown architecture, one of the few really striking examples of the Art Deco subset known as Moderne or Streamline Moderne in the city's stock of public buildings — unfortunately, great vintage design doesn't necessarily mesh with the facilities requirements of modern firefighting, meaning the Austin Fire Department has tolerated a growing list of frustrations with operating out of the the aging structure despite its obvious historic merit to those of us not actually fighting the fires. But even as the city prepares to improve the public amenities of the surrounding Brush Square — including our friends at the O. | VIDEO: Two Buildings Destroyed in California Fire Two buildings were destroyed Monday night in a major emergency fire in North Hollywood that burned for nearly two hours before being extinguished. The fire was first reported around 9 p.m. in the 5400 block of North Tujunga Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire was "well developed" by 9:15 p.m., according to the LAFD. Newschopper4 was over the flames and saw a big cloud of smoke around 9:25 p.m. Large flareups were being attacked by firefighters on tall ladders. More than a dozen streams of water could be seen attacking the fire from all sides, with crews moving onto a neighboring building to shoot down at the stubborn flames. Around 9:50 p.m., the LAFD called the fire a "Major Emergency" and said 111 firefighters were responding to the fire. Around 10 p.m., firefighters appeared to have finally squashed the majority of the fire, though an orange glow was still visible and the fire was still being attacked by at least a half dozen water lines. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES Florida county recruits most diverse class of firefighter aspirants in history The 91st class of 65 new Orange County Fire Rescue recruits marks the department's most diverse class in history. Department officials say more than half of the members in the group are Hispanic, Black or Asian. Recruit Paris Nunn, a graduate of the University of Central Florida, is one of 19 women in the class. "I've done service my whole life. I was in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia then I got into the fitness industry, so merging the two of service and fitness and having purpose is why I became a recruit," Nunn said. The National Fire Protection Association reports that women make up 4% of all firefighters. The new recruits put Orange County at 9%, more than double the national average. The female recruits in Orange County are doing the same rigorous training as the men, lifting 70 pounds with the hose and oxygen tank. That doesn't include the additional 20 pounds of bunker gear they will be wearing on a call. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Fatal New York school fire occurred 100 years ago At 5:15 p.m. today church bells will ring downtown, not for the upcoming Christmas holiday but for a more somber reason — the 100th anniversary of the Lyons Union School fire that killed two young girls and destroyed the school. It will be exactly 100 years to the time when a fast-moving blaze tore through the William Street building, trapping and killing 12-year-old Helen Baltzel and 13-year-old Elizabeth Burns. The fire ravaged the school building, causing $300,000 in damage, according to old news clippings. Another Lyons resident, Jacob Keller, also died — "overcome by excitement of the fire and fell dead of heart disease. On his return home he was telling members of his family of what had occurred, when he toppled over." Scott Bailey of Lyons and Eric Lewis of Geneva, a sixth-grade teacher in Lyons, are both history buffs who have been researching the fire's history. FINGER LAKES TIMES - METERED SITE COVID-19 vaccine plan means some states will lag in getting shots to highest-risk groups As health care workers and nursing home residents await the first syringes of the COVID-19 vaccine, few realize that when they will get a dose depends a lot on what state they live in. Though they're first in line for the vaccine, some people in those groups may get vaccinated after people in other states who are deemed lower priority. The vaccine is allocated according to the number of adults in each state, which doesn't correlate to the number of high-risk people living or working there. As long as supplies are limited, some states won't get doses proportionate to their needs. In those places, medical workers and residents of long-term care facilities will be exposed to the coronavirus for weeks or months longer. They'll be more vulnerable to sickness and death. Nevada is one of the winners.
