| A New Resource for Male Firefighters Over Age 40: '40PlusFIRE' Author: Billy Goldfeder, Deputy Chief, Loveland-Symmes Fire Department We all know that cancer is the #1 cause of firefighter death. In 2021, it was "my turn"...I am sharing my story, my diagnosis and what I went through to help others. Fortunately, I am a survivor. And as a survivor, I want to do whatever I can to educate firefighters as to the reality and myths of firefighter prostate cancer. With a lot of help from fellow firefighters, fire officers, doctors and related subject matter experts, as well as the IAFC, IAFF, NVFC, USFA and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, we were able to create a website and resources dedicated to male firefighters over the age of 40. read more |

Woman found dead inside home after massive house fire in San Antonio A woman is dead after a massive fire at North Side home. The fire started just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday off Mider Driver near Blanco Road. Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire when they arrived with the home fully engulfed in flames. Officials said due to the intense fire, it took a while to knock the flames down enough for the firefighters to do a search. Once inside, they found a 67-year-old woman in the back bedroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman's husband was able to make it out with minor smoke inhalation. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. No word on what caused the fire, but they believe it started in the back bedroom. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Amarillo Fire Department looking for applicants for paid training academy For the first time in over 25 years the Amarillo Fire Department is holding their own training academy. They are looking for people to take a test at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex. The highest scoring applicants will then be paid to go through training. The Amarillo Fire Department has been short staffed for the last few years but now they are sweetening the deal with paid training for firefighter hopefuls. Jeff Justus, Community Liaison for the Amarillo Fire Department, said the process starts with an entrance exam. "It's a civil service test," Justus said. "It is all written and it will include some general aptitude questions. Math, reading comprehension and a few mechanical questions." Around 40 to 50 of the top scoring applicants will go through an interview process, physical agility test and background check. From there, around 20 people will be chosen for the training academy. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Man charged with arson for fire that badly damaged north Austin car dealership A man is facing a felony arson charge for allegedly starting a fire early Sunday at a car dealership in North Austin. It happened at around 4 a.m. at San Fernando Motors, located at 8545 N. Lamar Boulevard, just north of the Hwy 183 intersection. According to court documents, Austin Police officers responded to the business for reports of glass breaking. Once they arrived they saw the fire they called the Austin Fire Department. APD officers found 52-year-old Hector Rodriguez in the parking lot -- and when he was asked what happened he made a statement that he started the fire and used "gas in a plastic water bottle and a lighter to start the fire," he also said he "opened the fuel caps and was going to set a vehicle on fire in an attempt to get emergency services to respond." KEYE-TV CBS/TELEMUNDO 42 AUSTIN Follow-up: El Paso architect believes there is still hope for De Soto Hotel VIDEO/PHOTOS: There may still be hope for the De Soto Hotel in downtown El Paso despite the damage it suffered in a fire on Friday, according to an El Paso architect. "There's all kind of possibilities available it's all just a matter of how much money you're willing to spend," said Architect Jennifer Countryman, who owns a firm that works on restoring historic buildings. "If the owner thinks it's a good idea, and if they are willing to reinvest but there's definitely a chance for it to come back to life." Most of the upper floors of the hotel were destroyed in the fire and during a collapse on the inside, according to El Paso Fire Deputy Chief Frank Reyna. Countryman said that if the owners are looking to restore and rebuild the hotel, it will not only depend on the safety of the structure but also on the buildings that surround it. KFOX-TV FOX 14 EL PASO Arson investigation underway after vehicle fire at San Antonio home, firefighters say San Antonio arson investigators are looking into a vehicle fire outside a home on the city's far Southwest Side early Tuesday morning. The fire was called in around 3 a.m. by a neighbor in the 200 block of Heathers Pond, not far from Loop 410 and Medina Base Road. Firefighters said they arrived to find a vehicle on fire and a gas can next to it. The fire spread to part of the roof's overhang nearby, fire officials said. The fire was knocked down quickly and without incident. Authorities say arson is being considered since the woman who lives at the home was having issues with an ex-boyfriend. A damage estimate is not currently known. No injuries were reported. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO No injuries reported after large fire at townhomes in north Harris County, officials say Firefighters responded to a large fire at townhomes in north Harris County Monday afternoon, according to the Spring Fire Department. The fire was reported at 4:39 p.m. at the Roundhill Townhomes on Cypress Station Drive. Firefighters discovered that the fire was coming from the upstairs A/C unit and then upgraded to the full box. No injuries have been reported at the scene. Eight units were damaged in the fire but only three homes were occupied. Red Cross were called to help those who were displaced by the fire. The Spring Fire Department is assisting Ponderosa Fire Department to help put out the blaze. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office also responded to the scene to investigate the fire. VIDEO: Fire burns 4 RVs in Oregon; no one injured, but 6 people displaced PHOTOS: A fire burned 4 RVs early Monday morning. There are no reports of injuries, but the fire displaced 6 people. Firefighters arrived before 5 a.m. to find two RVs at Blue Ox RV Park fully involved with fire. "Upon our arrival, we went into defensive mode," Battalion Chief Ryan Bond said. "There was a significant amount of fire to where we couldn't go offensive and go inside, so we protected exposures and made sure it couldn't advance any further." The fire damaged two additional RVs. The fire remains under investigation. Currently, the fire does not appear to be suspicious, the fire department said. KMTR-TV NBC 16 EUGENE County in West Virginia first to use new 911 system that shares videos, pictures Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency was the first in the state to use the new 911-eye system. This system allowed dispatchers to receive videos and pictures from callers at the scene of an emergency using their mobile devices. Assistant 911 Director Bradley Wilson said they had the program for roughly a week. He explained that any mobile device could use this technology. "We'll send them a link. They have to approve it. There are no apps to download. It is strictly an internet-based program. Just within a split second if they hit the link, and we'll get the video," Wilson said. This allowed them to get a picture or video of the situation before first responders showed up. Wilson said the caller could continue talking or even texting with the dispatcher while using the video program. WDTN-TV NBC 2 DAYTON New Jersey's new fire director made a small uniform change - it's causing big complaints On their left sleeves, Trenton firefighters have long worn a uniform patch they say is unlike other departments for its depiction of the Iron Fireman, a statue honoring their profession that has stood in the city for over 100 years. The Iron Fireman, clutching a rescued child, is where the department, pre-pandemic, held annual ceremonies. More importantly, it's where the names of firefighters who died in the line of duty are listed. The Iron Fireman is a huge part of Trenton firefighting, members say. That's why the decision by the department's new civilian director, Kenneth Douglas, to change the patch's design - and lose the Iron Fireman - has been met with anger and an online petition to keep the old design. Firefighters say they were not part of the decision, and should have been, and the new design, which newly sworn firefighters started wearing Thursday, tosses away countless years of tradition. NEW JERSEY ADVANCE - NJ.COM Plan to extend mental health support to Maine responders moves forward A Maine legislative committee signed off Monday on a proposal to try to help emergency responders better access mental health support. The bill, LD 1879, establishes a presumption that firefighters, emergency medical technicians, police officers, emergency dispatchers and others who are diagnosed as having post-traumatic stress disorder have the condition because of "extraordinary and unusual work stress," a bill before the Maine Legislature states. The legislature's Labor and Housing Committee unanimously approved the proposal on Monday. Professional Firefighters of Maine backed the change. The organization said the bill would shift the burden of proof to the employer to prove the condition is not related to work. The full Maine Legislature must still vote on the proposal. WMTW-TV ABC 8 POLAND SPRING Another Washington state fire station vandalized for $70,000 in missing & damaged equipment Yakima County Fire District #5 is looking at nearly $70,000 in damages after a burglary at their storage station over the weekend left them with smashed truck windows, a broken door and missing firefighting gear and medical supplies. Deputy Fire Chief Joel Byam said that someone might be able to sell the stolen medical supplies, but they will have a harder time finding someone to purchase firefighting gear on the street without notice. "We just feel this is a complete waste because what are you going to do with it?" Byam said. "Our fear now is it's just going to be dumped somewhere on the side of the road or damaged just to be damaged and that just doesn't help anybody." The old fire station is located at 6231 Yakima Valley Highway in Sawyer — about five miles east of Wapato — and is used to store firefighters' gear when they're on leave, as well as backup equipment. Fire officials believe the burglary occurred sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. YAKTRINEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
