VIDEO: Firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at an abandoned warehouse in Houston's East End on Tuesday morning. SkyEye flew over the building in an industrial area in the 6100 block of Navigation Boulevard at McFarland Street, just west of U.S. 90, where flames and smoke were seen coming from the warehouse. Houston Fire Department officials said the fire started right before 6 a.m. Firefighters managed to get the fire under control and extinguish the flames. No injuries were reported. Fire officials said there was no one inside the warehouse at the time since it was abandoned. Crews were working to clear out any debris that could restart the fire. ABC13 video spotted firefighters pulling office equipment out of the building, including filing cabinets and charred chairs. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON The amount of wildfire smoke firefighters breathe in and how it affects their health is at the heart of a major study. Apple is teaming up with Dr. So-Min Cheong, a Texas A&M researcher and associate professor in the Public Service & Administration Department at the Bush School. "This is investigating the impact of wildfire smoke on the health of firefighters, and we're particularly zooming into the heart," said Dr. Cheong, the lead researcher of the study. Apple Watch is equipping 100 firefighters with the Texas A&M Forest Service with the devices to monitor their heart rate and rhythm, sleep, blood oxygen, activity data, and more as firefighters battle wildfires. For three months, firefighters will also wear an air quality monitor and complete surveys related to sleep, activity, and wildfire smoke-related symptoms. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN PHOTOS: A large fire that broke out at a North Austin apartment complex caused 'significant damage' Monday night. Pflugerville Fire, Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2, and Round Rock Fire departments responded to the fire just before 7 p.m. at the Morgan Apartments located at 1801 W Wells Branch Parkway. According to Pflugerville Fire Battalion Chief Heath Doyle, between 30-40 firefighters worked to put out the "substantial amount of fire" that had already extended through the roof of one apartment building. The fire was extinguished two hours after the initial attack. "The issue we're gonna have right now is the safety of our firefighters getting in there in order to be able to effectively dig things out because of all the collapse potential," Chief Doyle said. "We'll probably have crews on the scene all night until the morning hours for sure." KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Since the first of the year, the Fritch Volunteer Fire Department has run on 42 calls. Half of those were for a fire, gas leak or motor vehicle accident. Thanks to the generosity of a local resident, the Fritch Volunteer Fire Department will begin "structure training" in a house, creating a live experience for preparing volunteer firefighters who risk their lives when entering a burning structure. "The more training the better off we are," said Assistant Fire Chief Trey White. "Fritch has a very unique dynamic, we don't have cookie-cutter homes, we have a lot of lake homes, a lot of different variable size homes," said Chief Zeb Smith.' Due to the variety of home builds, a live practice is invaluable to setting different scenarios. "We'll be able to do a little search and rescue, we're going to have a smoke machine smoke it out, will put someone in there as a victim, they'll be able to go in there and find them," said White. KVII-TV ABC 7 AMARILLO A house fire on the city's East Side is raising a few eyebrows among fire investigators after they say it appears there were actually two separate fires at the house early Monday morning. The fire was called in around 4:30 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of Hammond Avenue, not far from Rigsby Avenue and Interstate 10. Firefighters say when they arrived, they found flames showing from the house. The fire was eventually knocked down. Fire officials say they actually found evidence of two separate fires, one on the back and one on the side of the two-story home. No one was inside at the time of the fire. Authorities say it appears the house may have been undergoing some renovations. It's unclear if the fires started inside or outside the house. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Odessa Firefighter Ben Denney signed up for Be The Match, a donor service that connects people with blood cancer to donors that could help save them. "I got a call in 2021 saying I was a match and all they told me was, it was a ten year old boy with cancer for the second time and so I knew had to act and donate," said Ben Denney, a bone marrow donor, Odessa Firefighter and Paramedic. Denney flew to Washington on his second wedding anniversary to donate his bone marrow. At the time he didn't know it would be going to a young boy named Camden Barnard. Camden's family filled out a form to try and find the man that helped save their son, and after a while they managed to get in contact with Denney. "I decided to because I know if I was a parent, I'd want to know if some random person did this for my kid," said Denney. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA |

VIDEOS: One person is dead following an explosion at an Oakwood Village manufacturing plant Monday afternoon, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office confirms. Officials are expected to provide new details during a 2 p.m. press conference today, which we will stream live. Multiple crews from across Greater Cleveland and Akron responded to the I. Schumann & Co. metal plant on Alexander Road, near Bedford, where the blast led to a fire just after 2:15 p.m. Oakwood Fire Capt. Brian DiRocco says at least 13 others were taken to local hospitals, with several suffering burn injuries. The deceased victim has been identified as 46-year-old North Ridgeville native Steve Mullins, and sources tell WKYC's Lydia Esparra he was a maintenance worker at the plant. WKYC-TV NBC 3 CLEVELAND PHOTOS: Clean up for a crash on a northern California freeway turned deadly Saturday after a Tesla plowed into a fire truck that was shielding first responders who were working another accident. The driver of the Tesla Model S was killed when the car hit the truck that was parked on Interstate 680 around 4 a.m., according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. A passenger was also critically injured. Assistant Chief Tracie Dutter said four firefighters who were in the ladder truck were treated for minor injuries. Multiple photos posted on the agency's Facebook page showed the Tesla with a crushed front end and the $1.4 million truck preparing to be towed. Dutter said the truck had its lights on and was parked diagonally in northbound lanes of the freeway to protect first responders who were working an earlier accident that did not result in any injuries. FOX NEWS Seventy-five years ago this month, Cape Girardeau lost its "true community center." On the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1948, fire destroyed the 21-year-old Houck Field House on the State College campus. Not only was the field house the home of the Indians' basketball games, it also housed hoop competition for Cape Girardeau Central High School, College High School and the Sunday School League. In addition it served as the site for political rallies, patriotic assemblies, religious meetings, Scouting events, cooking schools and an untold number of other public gatherings. Built in 1927 through the efforts of then college president Dr. Joseph A. Serena, loss of the field house was significant for the college and the community. Here's the Southeast Missourian's coverage from that day and the next day's editorial. SOUTHEAST MISSOURIAN VIDEO: Five months after 100 people lost their lives in the Station nightclub fire, Rhode Island lawmakers passed the most sweeping changes to its fire code in state history. And despite some early calls to ease the requirements of the new code by businesses who felt the rules were overly burdensome, the law has remained largely intact. State Fire Marshal Timothy McLaughlin said the overhaul of the code has made Rhode Island "probably the safest state in the country" when it comes to fire safety. "When they did this in 2003, they did it for a reason," McLaughlin said. "We saw what happened, the pledge back then was ‘we never want this to happen again,' and I don't think we'll ever see that again." The Comprehensive Fire Safety Act was signed into law by then-Gov. Don Carcieri in July 2003. WPRI-TV CBS 12 PROVIDENCE |
