VIDEO: A beloved bakery near the University of Texas at Austin campus is a total loss after a fire ripped through the business Monday night into Tuesday morning. The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. Monday at the Texas French Bread bakery on Rio Grande Street, just down the road from the West Campus neighborhood and North Lamar Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they say flames were coming from the roof of the bakery. Firefighters fought the fire from the inside for about an hour, but the building then became unsafe and they had to work to extinguish the fire from outside. The roof ended up collapsing. No one was injured in the fire, but the building is an iconic one in Central Austin. Fire crews say it is a total loss. As of Tuesday at 6 a.m., the fire was almost out but crews were still monitoring hot spots and smoldering because there are so many layers due to the roof collapse. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Fifteen people are without a home Tuesday morning after an overnight apartment fire in Waco. Just before midnight, the Waco Fire Department were called out to the Flats on Chapel Apartments. When they arrived, responding crews called for a second alarm, which "is basically reinforcements due to heavy volume of fire," said Executive Deputy Fire Chief Robby Bergerson. A total of 34 firefighters responded and had the flames contained in the attic of the two-story building in about 30 minutes, Bergerson said. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. "That's going to be under investigation by our fire marshals but I can tell you that all of the fire was in the attic," he said. "There was no fire actually in apartments themselves." A total of seven units were damaged and one firefighter was hit in the head, Bergerson said. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE The Corpus Christi Fire Department is looking to purchase some $3 million in firefighting equipment through a state program. According to CCFD the equipment would come to no expense to taxpayers. Some of those items include a new fire engine and several devices that will be placed in ambulances. The technology has the potential to make a real life or death difference. The machine is a medical device which can deliver consistent and automatic chest compressions during CPR. The CCFD has two of the devices in operation and is looking to buy another 21 at a cost of $308,000. That's part of a $3 million request from the fire department to the Corpus Christi City Council. According to CCFD Fire Chief Robert Rocha, the equipment is necessary to meet the needs of the department. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI First responders tended to a person as well as a dog to make sure they were OK after a fire damaged an apartment in east Austin. The Austin Fire Department posted a photo on Twitter of a firefighter holding a black and white dog while an Austin-Travis County EMS paramedic placed an oxygen mask over its snout. They said they treated the dog after a fire started at the apartment at 1147 Poquito Street. ATCEMS wrote on social media that its medics took an adult patient to Dell Seton Medical Center with "potentially serious" injuries, though it's believed this person should recover. Paramedics treated the dog for smoke inhalation and "returned them to their family happy and healthy," ATCEMS said on Twitter. Firefighters shared a picture of the charred exterior of the apartment, which also showed smoke still pouring out of the eaves of the roof. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN The Rolling Pines Fire is now 100% contained as of Monday afternoon. After spanning more than 800 acres fire crews began to wrap up their work. This week, fire crews on scene are going to focus their efforts on the aftermath and go through the area extinguishing any hotspots that might flare-up. The once hectic scene in Bastrop County is now beginning to wind down. "I thank them so much for all they did they did a great job," said David Arrizola, who lives in Pine Hill Estates. This was an area that had to be evacuated last week. It was a calm site across the area as fire crews worked to wrap up their efforts on the Rolling Pines Fire. Many folks like Arrizola are now back home. The damage can be seen just feet from his home. He's grateful to the firefighters who stood by and protected his neighborhood. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN A local fire department is taking extra measures to keep crews safe while on the job. The new equipment? A portable speed bump. When first responders are on the scene of a crash or at a fire, they're already putting their lives in danger. So Whitesboro wanted to curb the risk of a distracted driver adding to that threat. "Firefighter safety is one of our big pushes here in the department now whether it be a structure fire or a car accident," said Whitesboro Fire Chief Steve Pinkston. Pinkston started volunteering with the fire department in 1985. He's seen just about every fire and emergency scenario, but says what he worries about most: "We've noticed lately the more traffic we're having on 82 and 377 that we're having drivers really occupied with what they're doing, not watching emergency scenes," said Pinkston. Three firefighters were killed and one critically injured from a partial building collapse while battling a fire in a vacant rowhome in west Baltimore early Monday, officials said. In a news conference held by Mayor Brandon Scott and the Baltimore City Fire Department, Scott released the names of the victims from the early morning rowhome fire. "Today, Baltimore has lost three of the bravest among us: Lt Paul Butrim, firefighter/paramedic Kelsey Sadler and EMT/firefighter Kenny Lacayo," Scott said. "All made the ultimate sacrifice. For that, Baltimore owes them the deepest gratitude and respect. A fourth EMT/firefighter John McMaster remains at the hospital in critical but stable condition." Baltimore City Fire Department Chief Niles R. Ford honored the bravery of his first responders and firefighters. WBAL-AM 1090 BALTIMORE VIDEO: After a massive fire broke out at a Newark recycling center early Tuesday, smoke could be smelled as far away as Manhattan and the Bronx, officials said. AIR11 was over the scene Tuesday just after 6 a.m. as two large piles of metal burned at the Eastern Metal Recycling Terminal, located in the Port Newark area of the city. Heavy clouds of smoke were seen drifting toward the northeast, in the direction of Jersey City and New York City. "Due to emergency personnel operating at a fire in Newark, New Jersey, residents in Manhattan and the Bronx may see or smell smoke," NYC's Office of Emergency Management tweeted at 5:15 a.m. It was not immediately clear when the fire started. No injuries had been reported due to the blaze. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK VIDEO: A local fire department is taking extra measures to keep crews safe while on the job. The new equipment? KXII-TV CBS/FOX 12 SHERMAN Social media blew up over the weekend with support for 14 Deming firefighters/EMTs who surprised city officials on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, with tendering their two weeks' notice at the John Strand Municipal Building, 309 S. Gold St. The 14 city employees cited low pay as the reason for tendering their resignations. A flood of social media posts began to appear on Facebook, with concerns of whether the city would be able to provide emergency services with nearly half of the Deming Fire Department personnel depleted. City Administrator Aaron Sera was at the Legislative Session in Santa Fe on Friday and is scheduled to meet with Union 4251 representatives at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at City Hall. Sera was the target of the social media blitz over the weekend despite his claims to have worked on behalf of the Deming Fire Department for better pay. DEMING HEADLIGHT A volunteer firefighter hopes to transform fire hoses and lives through her bag-making business. Janelle Robinson discovered a passion for firefighting and a desire to join its tight-knit community when she turned 40. She became a volunteer firefighter and EMT with Summerfield Fire District, and her new career led to an adventure in the business world. "We got a whole bunch of new hose one year, and a lot of it was going to get thrown away. I asked my chief if I could take some of it home and try to make something out of it," Robinson said. That experiment became Burn Bags USA. The business features different styles of bags made out of old fire hoses. Through it, she found an opportunity to help women put out the fires in their own lives. Women from Tabitha Ministry, a local recovery program, help her get bags out the door. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 |
