Residents rush to save pets, property as Abilene apartment burns VIDEO/PHOTOS: An Abilene apartment complex burned in a large overnight fire, leaving residents scrambling to save pets and personal property. The fire ignited at the Spanish Arms Apartment complex on N 3rd Street and Merchant Street around 3:00 a.m. Monday. Residents told KTAB and KRBC they awoke to a chaotic scene of smoke and flames. One tenant says she was asleep until a stranger started banging on her window and yelling fire. Others describe only have moments to grab items as they fled to safety, some even having to leave pets they couldn't find behind. The Abilene Fire Department has not provided information on this fire as of 9:00 a.m. Monday, but the complex does appear to be heavily damaged, likely leaving several residents displaced. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Nearly 2M Houston-area CenterPoint customers still without power 1 day after Storm Beryl VIDEO: Over 1.7 million households are still without power a day after Beryl lashed southeast Texas and left behind a path of darkness and destruction. CenterPoint Energy, the primary power provider for Houston, said customers should expect a multi-day process to restore their electricity. The ongoing outages come as a Heat Advisory was issued for much of the Houston area on Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s by the afternoon, and with high humidity, heat index values will make it feel like the triple digits. Cooling centers will open across the Houston area to help people without air conditioning during the Heat Advisory. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Officials investigating fire at Sanford City Hall Officials are investigating the cause of an early morning fire at Sanford City Hall. Around 3:00 a.m., several officials including the Fritch Fire Department, Fritch Police Department and Hutchinson County Fire Marshal responded to the scene. According to officials, no injuries were reported. Officials say the building is a total loss. Data was on backups, but old photographs were destroyed in the fire. At this time, operations will be moving to the community hall. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Houston driver lifted to safety after getting stuck in floodwaters, vehicle remains stuck VIDEO: A driver who was stranded in floodwaters on Highway 288 is safe after the Houston Fire Department lifted him to dry land Monday morning. Transtar traffic cameras captured footage of a man sitting on top of his truck on a flooded Highway 288 northbound at 610 South Loop. Fire crews gave him a life jacket and lifted him out of the water with a rescue ring buoy attached to a fire truck. Video shows the man getting rocked by choppy waters as Beryl's strong winds create waves in the highway floodwaters. By about 10:37 a.m. he was lifted to safety. His vehicle, which remains stuck, appears to belong to an auto repair company. Drivers are urged to keep an eye on high-water locations on Houston-area roads, and if you must leave your home, drive safely as Beryl moves through southeast Texas. VIDEO: Fire torches 45-foot vessel on San Francisco Bay; 2 boaters escape Two boaters and a dog managed to escape unharmed Monday afternoon when a fire destroyed the boat they were on in San Francisco Bay. The fire burned the 45-foot vessel off Westpoint Harbor in Redwood City at around 1 p.m. The San Francisco Fire Department said one of its rescue boats was at the scene extinguishing the fire. The department cited the U.S Coast Guard as saying the two occupants abandoned the boat, named Lucid Dream, once it caught fire and were rescued by a good Samaritan vessel. The owner of the boat, Vicki Topp of Big Sur, told KPIX that she, another person and a dog were rescued by the Coast Guard and Redwood City firefighters. Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Graves told KPIX the Bayliner sailing vessel was fully engulfed when a Coast Guard helicopter arrived and located the two boaters and the dog in the water. KPIX-TV CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO New Jersey fire chief dies at 110; This was his touching final wish PHOTOS: Vincent Dransfield was so famously resilient that when he passed away at home in Passaic County, three months after celebrating his 110th birthday, it came as a surprise. "It was very unexpected," said his granddaughter, Erica Lista. Even among world's few hundred supercentenarians, the term for those 110 or older, Dransfield stood out as an anomaly. He lived alone at a house in Little Falls, his home for 79 years, remained on the roster of the fire company where he served as fire chief from 1958 to 1965 and continued to drive his Hyundai sedan on local errands, his granddaughter said. He died June 26 at home, three days after an upbeat final visit with Lista in which he perused photos of his great-grandson's high school graduation. She said she brought him some cream for his joints because knee pain was one of the few things that ever slowed him down. NJ.COM Threat Under the Floor: Unmarked abandoned wells pose deadly danger in South Carolina VIDEO: You could be living on top of a danger in South Carolina and not even realize it - something some Upstate families have learned the hard way. Abandoned water wells - there's a proper procedure for how they should be closed up, but officials say that isn't always happening. "They're all over and sometimes they're just covered up and kind of forgotten," said Oconee County Emergency Management Director Scott Krein. Experts believe there are more than 100,0000 water wells across the state. They don't know how many of them have been abandoned without being properly sealed. Krein's agency was called to a home on Park Avenue in Salem in November 2023. Dorothy Downey, 83, was helping her daughter pack up before a move. When they tried to move the dining room table, rotting floorboards gave way and Downey plunged into a dark, 50-foot hole. WHNS-TV FOX 21 GREENVILLE Related Video: Gaffney Fire Chief remembers well rescue Storm Beryl leaves millions of Texans without power as dangerous heat descends on the region VIDEO: Restoring power to millions of Texans slammed by the deadly and destructive storm Beryl could take days or even weeks, posing a dangerous scenario for residents who will not have air conditioning as sweltering heat settles over the state. Beryl slammed into southern Texas as a Category 1 hurricane Monday, knocking out power to more than 2.5 million homes and leaving at least 8 people dead in Texas and Louisiana. More than 2.3 million people throughout Texas were still without power Tuesday morning, according to poweroutage.us. The storm – now a tropical depression – unleashed flooding rains and winds that transformed roads into rushing rivers, ripped through power lines and tossed trees onto homes, roads and cars. As it hurtles toward the Midwest Tuesday, it threatens to trigger more flooding and tornadoes along its path. CNN WEATHER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
