Fire Department: Rollover crash sparks car fire that destroys warehouse in northwest Houston VIDEO: A rollover crash involving a single vehicle sparked a car fire that spread to a warehouse, according to the Houston Fire Department. The fire started a little before 10 p.m. Monday at a warehouse on Mitchelldale Street in northwest Houston. Fire officials say they were initially responding to the single-car crash, but when they arrived, the car was engulfed in flames. The car was so close to the building that it then spread to a warehouse full of Styrofoam and construction materials. Fire crews say the driver of the vehicle was able to get herself out of the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution and no update on her condition or any injuries is available at this time. No hazardous materials were detected in the smoke or runoff by hazmat crews. Officials didn't say what caused the crash. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Two-alarm fire damages three homes in east Austin; no one hurt VIDEO: Hot weather late Monday night led Austin Fire crews to call a second alarm while fighting a fire at a home under construction in east Austin. Fire crews arrived at the home just before 10:25 p.m. on East Fourth Street between Pedernales and San Saba streets in the Holly neighborhood. The Austin Fire Department said crews were able to put the fire out at 10:50 p.m. According to AFD, the fire briefly spread to the outside of two nearby occupied homes, but crews were able to quickly put out those fires. Austin Fire said the people inside those homes were able to make it outside safely by the time fire crews arrived. No one was hurt. The cause remains under investigation. AFD said crews called for a second alarm due to the heat and the fact the fire briefly spread to the two other homes. For Toni Stithem, a Victoria County volunteer firefighter, the relatively quiet Fourth of July weekend was a good thing. Stithem was one of about a dozen firefighters assigned to fire watch at Patriot Park during the evening of July 4. They stood by just in case any fires broke out. Nothing much happened, Stithem said. Luckily, no fires at Patriot Park meant no story to break — but, there is a story worth telling about Stithem. The 62-year-old mother of four and grandmother of three, joined the Victoria County Volunteer Fire Department in 2017, ostensibly to set up and manage a county fire department Facebook account. Born and raised in a small town, Earlysville, in the middle of Virginia, Stithem moved to Victoria when she married David Stithem, of Victoria, more than 40 years ago. The short public service announcement identifies three steps New Yorkers can take "as the threat landscape continues to evolve." "So there's been a nuclear attack," the PSA starts. "Don't ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit. OK. So what do we do?" In the event of a nuclear incident, the PSA advises the following actions: Get inside: Move indoors and away from any windows. Stay inside: Close all doors and window, and move into the basement if you have one. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
