How you can request a portable cell tower at no charge, with FirstNet
Author: Ryan Fields-Spack, EMT-P, Captain (Ret.)
It’s a fact that firefighters need to be connected at all times to their crewmates. Communications is their lifeline. When cellular or radio networks go down, firefighters can feel safer knowing they can request portable cell sites to quickly re-establish terrestrial coverage during an event. Ryan Fields-Spack, a member of the FirstNet Response Operations Group, describes the need and benefits of deployable assets, available to all FirstNet customers at no charge.

Firefighters in Walker County rescued a driver and two children from a flooded ditch Monday morning along Highway 30 near the San Jacinto River. It happened around 10:30 a.m. when an SUV hydroplaned and went off the roadway and into the ditch. Firefighters from Huntsville and the Crabb's Prairie Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash and when they arrived they found one of the children on top of the SUV. They were able to safely get all three occupants out of the submerged vehicle. Nobody had any serious injuries, according to first responders.

The Smith County Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause of the Sunday morning fire at Posados Cafe in Lindale. Investigators determined Monday that the fire was caused by a lightning strike. No injuries were reported after the fire, according to Clay Williamson, Assistant Chief with the Lindale Fire Department. The fire was reported Sunday morning shortly after 10 a.m., and firefighters from Lindale, Dixie and Red Springs fire departments were called to the structure fire at 3201 South Main Street in Lindale. Lindale Police Chief Dan Somes reportedly requested assistance from the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office to investigate the fire. "Smith County Fire Marshal Deputies Michael Malone and Caitlin Roberson, along with Fire Investigator Travis Johnson, investigated the fire.

Strong winds ripped the roof off a building in the Fort Worth Stockyards Monday afternoon. The roof landed on top of several parked cars in the 2200 block of North Main Street. The Fort Worth Fire Department responded and is investigating. So far, there is no word on any injuries. "Those pieces of metal flying at a high rate of speed can become deadly. Very sharp pieces of metal. So they did investigate this building for some structural integrity. The building appears to be ok, but quite a mess they have to clean up out here," said Mike Drivdahl, PIO for Fort Worth Fire Department. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for Tarrant County at 4:57 p.m. but was allowed to expire at 5:30 p.m. Robin King told NBC 5 it was her first time in Fort Worth. She was caught off guard by the swift moving storm.

Wildfires continue to ravage parts of the Western united states, but several East Texans have gone to help battle the blazes. Nearly 60 personnel from the Texas A&M Forest Service and some from East Texas look to help those out west put out fires. In the Eastern Sierra Region of California, in the Inyo National Forest, you can find San Augustine-based District Forrester Austin Morrison part of a crew battling wildfires on the initial attack. "That mountain effect creates lightning that is very frequent and the rain, being as hot as it is, and being the climate that it is here, typically doesn't reach the ground," Morrison said. "Lightning is the main cause of fires out here." Morrison deployed on July 1st and arrived two days later. It is his first firefighting experience outside of Texas, already battling at least three fires in 10 days including the Pine Creek fire.

Police said no other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported.

Police and firefighters were injured Monday, one seriously, in an accident involving a downed power line, according to authorities. Around 4 p.m., following an intense thunderstorm, Valdosta's fire and police departments responded to a call of a power line down on the Madison Highway near Dampier Street, a statement from the city stated. The situation involved a power line which was hanging low, Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said. As police and firefighters arrived on the scene to check the line, a vehicle drove through the section of the roadway where the line was down, the statement said. "It was a truck that came right through and caught the line, causing it to snap and whip around," Paulk said. Three firefighters and one officer received injuries on the scene and were taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment, the city's statement said. One of the firefighters had to have a leg amputated, the sheriff said. The conditions of the injured police and firefighters are unknown.

Chicago firefighter Chris King will make his professional debut July 16-18 at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver. King, who has experience in both Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, will pilot a Toyota for Mark Howard's Papillion, Neb.-based Howard Motorsports Funny Car operation. "Not many people ever get the chance to drive a nitro Funny Car, let alone compete in one at the highest level of the sport, and I get chills and get all fired up just thinking about it," King said. "Tomorrow isn't guaranteed — especially in my line of work — and I'm 100% focused on making this happen while I can. Who knows? With some sponsor help and a little luck, maybe I can make a name for myself out here." After Denver, Howard Motorsports' all-volunteer crew, led by crew chief Terry Totten and sponsored by Chip Lofton's Vita C Shots, Impact, Competition Products, Howard's Cams, and JJ Supply of North Carolina, will run Topeka and possibly Indy.

PHOTOS: David Ebarle pulls a tiny lever on the familiar red apparatus in front of him, shaped like a Monopoly house made of iron. It emits a mechanical, grinding noise that drones over his voice — it's almost a static-like sound. We're standing inside the currently shuttered San Francisco Fire Department Museum, an unremarkable burgundy building adjoining Station 10 on Presidio Avenue. Inside, framed photographs of every city fire chief from the past 150 years loom overhead, and aging leather fire hats and badges line the shelves of glass cases lining the room. At the center of this niche hub for emergency services, tucked behind a mannequin leading three firehorses, is a defunct fire alarm call box that once stood at the intersection of Front and Pine streets, just steps away from Embarcadero Station. Ebarle — who is on the board of trustees for Guardians of the City, the organization that runs the museum — is showing me how it works.

VIDEO: On most days, you can find the Chattanooga Fire Department's Lt. Michael Battle working out at the Sports Barn. On a typical day, he will bench press anywhere from 400 to 500 lbs. While he's been inspiring others in the gym for years, he's now reaching more people on the app TikTok. Videos of his workouts have gone viral. "I was actually working out and somebody recorded me," Battle said. "They put it out and it kind of gained momentum and it kind of took off from there." People started watching his workouts and feeling encouraged. "I never thought that me doing something that I love could affect people that much," Battle said. But he said it's about much more than the weight on the bar, it's about mental health. "It allows me to clear my mind and I feel better. I feel relieved once I leave here. I'm ready to tackle my day," Battle said.
