Two additional children were pronounced dead following a house fire on Saturday on the North Side, bringing the death toll to five in what the fire chief says is the deadliest house fire in more than a decade. In an update on Monday, Chief Charles Hood said the fire that started in the 11600 block of Winding Oak Drive "claimed the lives of, basically, a generation." Six people were inside the home when the fire broke out in the garage after 3 a.m. One resident was pronounced dead at the scene and the others were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Four of the residents taken to the hospital died, Hood said. The victims include a 29-year-old woman; a 50-year-old woman; a 6-year-old girl; an 11-year-old girl; and a 12-year-old boy, Hood said.  

PHOTOS: A memorial service will be held on Saturday for the 67th anniversary of the Shamrock McKee Refinery explosion. The Sunray Fire Department, Dumas Fire Department and Valero Emergency Response Team will participate in a memorial service at the Sunray Community Building at 7 p.m. The Sunray Community Building is located at 415 S. Main Street. The memorial service will honor the 19 men who died protecting the community on July 29, 1956. This event is considered the fourth largest firefighter loss of lives in the U.S. for a single fire incident involving industrial or structural fire protection. The community is encouraged to attend the memorial service to honor the bravery of those 19 men.  

Firefighters are not just battling fires this summer, they are also battling the heat. Triple digit temperatures are setting records across the United States, including in Lubbock. In addition to the West Texas heat, firefighters could experience temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees while battling fires. "It's imperative that we prepare ourselves to still be able to provide that fire service to the city," Lubbock Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Derek Delgado said. LFR crews are required to complete one hour of functional fitness each day, preparing for the physical demands of fighting fires in extreme temperatures. "Our crews will workout with their gear on or their regulators and mask, so that gets them prepared for those extraneous physical activities while in the heat," Delgado said.  

While the Lone Star State is no stranger to wildfires they have increased recently due to the record-setting temperatures across most of the state. To counter the dangerous conditions, nearly half of Texas counties have issued burn bans, and the Texas A&M Forest Service is leading the charge to contain and combat the spreading blazes. Currently, the Texas A&M Forest Service is actively fighting three wildfires, and in the past week alone, they have successfully controlled over a dozen wildfires, including incidents in Leon and Grimes counties. Since Friday, the agency has responded to 19 new requests for assistance on wildfires that have scorched more than 500 acres of land across the state. The firefighting operations are being coordinated at the Texas A&M Forest Service Emergency Operations Center, where experts monitor fire risk and manage firefighting resources and personnel.  

PHOTOS: A hotel in Clarksville, Indiana was engulfed in flames on Sunday, according to the Clarksville Fire Department. WLKY had a crew on the scene where much of the length of the Best Western off Lewis and Clark Parkway could be seen roaring with fire. Some hotel workers on site said that all staff and guests got out safely and that guests who were staying at the hotel are being taken care of. A spokesperson for the fire department said that there were no injuries and that the building was quite old, so there may have been fewer safeties in place. Police are assisting in the investigation in case it is later determined any crime may be involved.  

The wake-up call came Feb. 3 in eastern Ohio. A Norfolk Southern freight train rumbling through the village of East Palestine jumped the track. Damaged tank cars spewed toxic chemicals into the air and water. A massive fire lit up the sky. More chemicals were burned days later. Polluted runoff flowed into waterways. Nearly six months later, the cleanup is still underway. Damage could run into hundreds of millions of dollars, while long-term health and environmental ramifications remain unknown. More than 1 million hazmat shipments pass through small towns, major cities and vast expanses of rural land across the United States every day. "More than 99% arrive without incident," said Tim Butters, a transportation safety consultant who previously worked for the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.  

Edmond will now waive utility charges for the surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty. The City Council just made the vote on Monday night. The Edmond City Council approved the measure unanimously with city officials saying it really wasn't a hard decision to make. f a police officer or firefighter is killed in the line of duty, their surviving spouse will never receive a utility bill from Edmond ever again, for the rest of their lives. Under the new policy, a surviving spouse is eligible if the officer or firefighter dies while performing official duties. Because it is a city waiver, it only extends if the surviving spouse lives within the Edmond city limits and has Edmond Electric and/or city resources.  

VIDEO: First responders don't hesitate to enter a dangerous situation to make sure our community members are safe. Often, they are so busy protecting the community, they forget to make sure they're protecting themselves by addressing their mental health. "We feel like we have to be the people who are handling everything and addressing all of the issues and then we go on about our business to the next - the next call, the next incident," said Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Blackmon. She says first responders often don't take a breath to process after being in challenging situations. "And we don't ever stop and process our own feelings and what we should be doing to help ourselves," said Blackmon. Jeff Dill is the behavioral health administrator for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, as well as the founder of the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance.  

VIDEO: In an effort to save more lives in the event of a cardiac arrest, UR Medicine and the American Heart Association are introducing a CPR training station on-the-go. The mobile CPR station is the first of its kind in New York State, and only the second in the U.S. "The places where they're in health care, or clinics, is not enough. I think with communities, you have to go out and reach out so it's easy for all our friends, family, and neighbors to learn how to do CPR," said Dr. Spencer Rosero, interim chief of UR Medicine Cardiac Care. Officials say the demand for CPR training following Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest in January contributed to the creation of the machine. "Many times, people come to our ED with cardiac arrest who have received help even before EMTs have arrived," said Kathy Parrinello, COO of Strong Memorial Hospital.
