PHOTOS: First responders, fellow firefighters and the community are mourning the tragic loss of firefighter and EMT Nahit Oral, who died in the line of duty on Thursday. The department said Oral suffered a medical emergency following a training event. "Firefighter Oral began his service with the Community Volunteer Fire Department on March 2, 2020, and was assigned to Fire Station 93. He was the recipient of the Academic Excellence Award for Fire Academy Class 2020-Alpha," the department said in a released statement. His body was transported from the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner's Office to a funeral home where firefighters will remain by his side until he is flown back to his home country of Turkey. Oral leaves behind his wife, Marie, and Brother, Ozan. Final arrangements are pending.

VIDEO: The new children's museum that is being constructed caught fire Monday. A massive fire burned at La Nube Children's Museum along Sante Fe and Main in downtown El Paso around 2:15 p.m. 911 reports indicated there was a fire at the top of the museum and an explosion had happened, according to El Paso Fire Deputy Chief Rick Carson. "We had reports of an explosion and then a fire. Heavy smoke showing," said Carson. Thick black smoke billowed in the air from materials burning at the top of the museum, Carson explained. Fire crews arrived at 2:18 p.m. and learned construction crews were able to evacuate the site, Carson said. All the construction workers were accounted for, the construction foreman reported to El Paso Fire Department. Three fire ladders were placed over the structure.

PHOTO: A woman is hospitalized after teenagers and first responders rescued her from a car submerged in a pond near Bullard. Sometime before 11:45 p.m. Monday, law enforcement responded to Farm to Market Road 346 and Olivia Lane in Smith County, west of Bullard. A car had crashed in a curve in the road before flipping upside down in a nearby pond. At this time of night, the temperature had dropped to the high 40's -- not far from the conditions that commonly induce hypothermia. The unidentified woman was the only occupant of the vehicle and jaws of life were needed to extract her. According to the incident commander, Flint Fire Lt. Hunter Wrath, six or seven bystanders were in the water trying to help when law enforcement arrived at the scene.

One person was taken to an area hospital after a house fire on the city's West Side early Tuesday morning, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire was called in around 12:50 a.m. in the 230 block of Amires Place, not far from Northwest 36th Street and Monterrey Park. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found fire and smoke showing from a front bedroom. Firefighters got a quick knock down of the fire. Fire officials say the two residents who lived inside the home woke up to find a bed on fire. One of the residents had burns and was taken by ambulance to Brooke Army Medical Center, where they are now being treated. The fire was contained to the front bedroom of the house. A fire investigation team is working to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) is requesting nominations honoring first responders who have passed away in the last year to be displayed in a memorial at the 2023 Texas Emergency Management Conference in Fort Worth. This event honors the life and service of first responders across emergency management, fire and rescue, law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS), and public health, who have passed away. "One of the most powerful and meaningful displays at the Texas Emergency Management Conference is our First Responder Memorial," said Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. "As we pause to reflect on the lives of our colleagues who have passed on, we hope all Texans will join us in this deeply-moving opportunity to honor those dedicated individuals for their service to our communities and our state."

Fire officials in Littleton are investigating the cause of a fire that impacted two businesses. Fire Chief Chad Miller told News 9 the fire started shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday on Cottage Street. He said when crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the roof and some small explosions. There are no reports of any injuries. The fire destroyed the company SBP Builders and heavily damaged another business, New England Truck Tire, Miller said. He does not believe anyone was inside when the fire broke out.

Rail safety has been a big topic of discussion with the recent train derailments in Ohio and one as recently as last week in West Virginia. Our region is no stranger to derailments, like the 17 rail cars that fell into the James River in Lynchburg back in 2014. Next month will mark nine years since a CSX train derailed in Lynchburg, dumping thousands of gallons of fuel into the James River. Lynchburg's Battalion Chief Daniel Williams was one of the first crews to arrive on the scene that day. "When you turned the corner, everything was just black. And so the first thing we wanted to do was to make sure life safety wasn't a situation. If it is then we want to evacuate as quickly as we can," said Williams. No one was hurt and no hazardous chemicals were released from that derailment. Since then, Williams says the city has taken extra steps to prepare for future disasters.

As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, WTOL 11 is featuring a different female leader in the community each week. This week, WTOL 11 sat down with Toledo Fire & Rescue Chief Allison Armstrong to talk about what women have inspired her and what it's like being a woman in a predominantly male field. "My goal from being a young child was 'I wanted to be a Toledo firefighter,'" said Armstrong. "Not just a firefighter, I wanted to work for Toledo." Allison Armstrong joined TFRD in 2000. She became chief in 2022. She says she didn't endure obstacles one might think being a woman in a field that is made up of predominantly men. "I do feel, I will say this, that the women who came before me really paved the way for me to say that," explained Armstrong. "I didn't feel like I experienced any of those barriers that may have been there before."

Californians pummeled by an onslaught of dangerous storms will get deluged again as another atmospheric river threatens more deadly flooding. More than 30 million people in California were under flood watches Monday that cover much of the state, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Fresno and Sacramento. The brunt of the storm is expected to lash Northern and central California beginning late Monday and Southern California starting Tuesday. Already, a levee breach in Monterey County blamed on devastating weekend flooding has prompted evacuation alerts for thousands. And Monterey Bay residents could soon find themselves on a virtual island, cut off by more floodwater. About 20 swift-water rescue teams in more than 10 counties have been positioned ahead of the looming storm, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Monday, following dozens of water rescues in recent days.
