VIDEO: A fire that broke out early Tuesday morning burned down an apartment building that was under construction just east of downtown and forced the evacuation of a building next door. San Antonio firefighters responded to the corner of Center Street and N. Swiss Street around 3 a.m. and found the fire in full bloom. It had engulfed the wooden frame of what was going to be a building of loft apartments, according to an artist rendering on the internet. Firefighters say the building had not had any utilities installed yet. During the height of the fire, firefighters called for the evacuation of another apartment building next to it. They say about 20 people left their homes temporarily as a precaution. Firefighters were concerned that the fire might spread. However, they were able to stop the flames from spreading and residents were allowed to return home later.

PHOTOS: Firefighters returned to the scene Monday morning where a woman was killed and three homes were destroyed in a huge fire that started early Sunday morning. In addition to Morgan's Point, Sunday morning firefighters from Temple and Moffatt responded to a fire around 6:14 a.m. at 41 Vista Lane, according to the Bell County Fire Marshall. Witnesses told firefighters the fire had spread to other homes on Lemonwood Drive and Vista Drive but firefighters at the time were unable to stop it from spreading from house to house when they arrived on scene. By 9 a.m. the fire was completely out in the area. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, according to officials.

Wes Moorehead, former Assistant Director, has been promoted to Associate Director of Forest Resource Protection and Fire Chief at Texas A&M Forest Service. The forest resource protection division of the agency provides statewide leadership in the protection of the people, property, and natural resources of Texas from wildfire and other disasters. "I am privileged to provide leadership and counsel to the 280 employees in the division," said Moorehead. "The many departments in the division have varied functions, but I feel it is my job to ensure everyone is effectively fulfilling the agency's mission to protect the communities and natural resources of Texas."

Corpus Christi firefighters are investigating a late-night fire that started around 10:30 p.m. Monday night. The fire engulfed a garage at a home on Sacky Drive. CCFD said the fire spread to other garages nearby and caused some propane tanks to explode. Fire crews faced some challenges because the fire hydrants in the neighborhood are spaced far apart. It took about 30 minutes for crews to put the fires out. Three garages and some fences were damaged, however, no homes were damaged, and no one was injured during the incident.

VIDEO: From Celina to Plano, a group of firefighters and family members walked 140 miles to raise awareness about occupational cancer. It's called Walk for the Red 140, and they started the journey on Thursday and finished on Sunday. This particular walk raised money for eleven firefighters in North Texas who died of cancer or are currently battling the disease. Jarrett Beshears, a Plano firefighter, was one of the leaders. He said, "I just want to make sure everybody out there knows this is a big deal. We're 17 percent more likely to get cancer than any other occupation." Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters. Beshears walked in honor of his late coworker and friend, Gerald Don Becker. His fire family knew him as "Goon." The walk fell on the second anniversary of his death.

Ten fire departments and crews with the Texas A&M Forestry Service have been battling a stubborn, wind driven brush fire in rural Mills County. The fire was first reported southeast of Goldthwaite about noon Monday, with high winds quickly causing it to grow. The Forestry Service responded to assist Goldthwaite volunteers and other departments from at least three other counties by mid-afternoon. The fire was burning in rough hilly and rocky terrain, making access difficult. In addition to fire and brush trucks from the various departments, the Forestry Service provided bulldozers and motor graders and flew aircraft out of Mineral Wells to drop chemical retardant on the fire. Firefighters worked through the night, with the fire listed as 50 percent contained by midnight.

Several explosions lead to a fire at the Timbuk Tree Farm in Licking County early Tuesday morning. Firefighters at the scene said explosions within one building happened at the farm located on the 2000 block of Timbuk Road in Granville around 2 a.m. Three buildings that have offices and products that were being shipped out are on fire, as well as the shipping area. Plastic and pallets in that area have all burned. Firefighters said the fire spans about the size of a football field. Greenhouses next to the buildings that caught fire have not yet been affected. No injuries have been reported. Several fire departments have been called to the scene.

DNA from more than 200 Nashville firefighters was used to study the long-term health of 9/11 first responders at the World Trade Center. A new study featuring research from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) used the samples to determine 9/11 first responders were more likely than their peers to have a genetic mutation that can cause blood cancers or cardiovascular disease. Why it matters: The study, published last week, harnessed the power of VUMC's massive DNA database that includes samples donated by some 300,000 unique patients. How it works: Patients who opt to participate in the database program, called BioVU, have DNA collected from leftover blood samples. Samples are de-identified and cannot be traced back to an individual person, although some of the anonymous patients' characteristics, including occupation, are logged to help researchers track trends.

A former Boston Red Sox pitcher who appeared in games during the club's run to a World Series victory in 2018 recently graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, officials announced Monday. Justin Haley, who pitched in four games during that season, graduated from the academy on Feb. 28, according to West Newbury Fire Chief Michael Dwyer. "Firefighter Haley's commitment to his family helped lead him here, and he will be a great asset to our department and community here in West Newbury," Dwyer said. The 30-year-old California native who moved to Newburyport said that as his baseball career drew to a close he wanted to pursue work closer to the home he shares with his wife, son, and daughter.

Equipment from Spring Mill Fire Company in Whitemarsh Township, Pennsylvania is on its way to help firefighters in Ukraine by way of North Jersey. "It's our way to give back in some fashion. Volunteer fire companies, they want to give back to the community in any way that we can, and maybe this is giving back more than just the local," said Chief Wayne Masters of Spring Mill Fire Company. Masters said their company typically has used, but still usable, gear that they donate to other companies in need. "A new set of turnout gear today costs about $4,000, so instead of disposing of it or anything like that, we like to help out in the community," said Masters. They haven't been able to donate for the last two years due to the pandemic so the company has more than normal.
