Tree trimmer dies after contact with power line in northwest Harris County, officials say A tree trimmer died after coming in contact with a power line in northwest Harris County on Monday afternoon, the Harris County Fire Marshal said. At about 12 p.m., EMS responded to a call for an unconscious person in the 5700 block of Pinewilde, officials say. Champions Forest Fire Department said the man's body has not been recovered and CenterPoint Energy will be turning off the electricity so crews can remove the body. Skyeye's video shows two Centerpoint power trucks and two EMS vehicles parked on the street. Officials say two tree trimmers were working during the incident. Investigators have not given further details on the second man. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON San Antonio home collapses during fire VIDEO: A home on the East Side collapsed on Tuesday morning when it went up in flames and became the latest in a string of house fires in the area. San Antonio firefighters were called to the home in the 100 block of Omaha St., near South Hackberry, at 5:25 a.m. When they arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames. The house has since collapsed and the flames are ongoing because of a gas line, according to SAFD. CPS Energy will need to dig under the street to cut off that gas line. At this time it is unclear if anyone was inside the home when the fire started and it is unknown if the house was abandoned or under construction. The fire spread to a home next door, but firefighters were able to contain it. Arson investigators were called to the scene as this is the latest in a string of fires on the East Side. SAFD said they aren't ruling anything out. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Fire flares up in same Windcrest home twice in 1 night Firefighters in Windcrest were called to put out a fire in one home not once, but twice, in one night. The second time around, the home, located in the 200 block of Driftwind, sustained extensive damage. Fire crews responded to the original call before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and found fire inside the structure. The two men who lived there already had escaped safely. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, containing the damage to just a couple of rooms. A few hours later, an arson investigator noticed flames coming from the roof and called crews back to the scene. They say because the home's doors and windows were open due to the first fire, the wind was able to whip through and spread the flames throughout the structure. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO 'This fire is going to last days, if not weeks': Fort Hood officials provide updates on Crittenburg Complex, Flat fires VIDEO: Fort Hood fire officials told the public Monday afternoon that two fires are being tracked: The Crittenburg Complex Fire and the Flat, Texas fire. They clarified this during a news conference at 1:30 p.m., which included officials from the Fort Hood Directorate of Emergency Services and the Texas A&M Forest Service. The fire is said to have been started last week with a series of small fires on the southside of the installation in the training area, according to Fort Hood officials. "We are not 100 percent certain yet, but all indicators point to small arms fire and some motors may have caused the fires here on the installation. This was not caused by a controlled or prescribed burn," according to Fort Hood Cornel Chad Foster. Due to a rise in temperatures and the direction of the wind, the fires picked up and dispersed throughout the installation, according to officials. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Das Goat Fire in Medina County 95% contained, officials say VIDEO: Crews continue to work to contain the wildfire in Medina County that has been burning for days. Firefighters have contained 95% of it, according to local officials. "Not that we're in a 100 percent good place, but we're not completely out of control at this point," said Medina County ESD 1 Fire Chief Clint Cooke. Cooke said they are working with residents but have a plan in place in case fire conditions change. "We're working with residents that are specifically affected in the High Mountain Ranch that we're going to bring them in with an I.D. so that all the residents are still secured with the other evacuations," he said. "But they're going to be escorted in so that if there is an unexpected shift or change, we can get them out of there." KSAT TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Aggie VET team treat over 100 animals burned and injured in Eastland County fire VIDEO: With winds pushing flames rapidly across farm and ranch lands, hundreds of cows and other animals were injured or killed in this month's fire across Eastland County. Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine deployed their emergency response team [VET] and mobile vet clinics to meet the injured animals right where they were. "This deployment was very different for us," said Dr. Wesley Bissett, director of the VET team. "It was very focused on the large animal side, the livestock side; again, completely understandable given the rural nature of the community, and the importance of the agricultural community to their economic base." Called to service by the Texas Division of Emergency Management, 15 A&M staff and volunteers associated with veterinary medicine spent approximately one week in Eastland County, treating over 100 burn victims, from cows to cats and dogs – even firefighters' search and rescue dogs. VIDEO: Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at vacant building in New York Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze overnight in the Bronx. The FDNY said the flames broke out early Tuesday morning on East 165th Street between Prospect and Union avenues in Morrisania. As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported, the fire appears to be out, but it sparked a three-alarm response. Video showed the flames and smoke billowing out from the roof of the building. FDNY officials believe the building was vacant, and no injuries were reported. "We had heavy fire at a three-story building, this is a vacant building. Units were met with fire throughout. We had an initial attack, but we had to pull everybody out due to stability issues with the building," Deputy Chief Brian Shovlin told Westbrook. "The weather conditions did contribute slightly, the icing conditions." The Red Cross is on scene to help anyone who may be displaced. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Firefighters in some Maine communities working shorter weeks under new union contracts Maine fire departments are moving toward shorter workweeks for first responders under new union contracts. Orono and Old Town are two of five communities where firefighters recently have approved contracts that reduce their workweek from the traditional 56 hours to 42. The reduction is part of an effort to create better work-life balance for first responders and attract new firefighters to the field, according to the Professional Firefighters of Maine union. The change comes amid a struggle across Maine and nationally to recruit qualified firefighters and retain current staff. While firefighters in Orono, Old Town, York, Waterville and Gardiner will work — or are already working — shorter weeks under their new contracts, they won't take a pay cut because their hourly rates will change accordingly, according to Ronnie Green, a retired Bangor firefighter who is 4th district vice president for the firefighters' union. BANGOR DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Pennsylvania VIDEOS: Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, the nation's worst nuclear accident. A combination of human error and malfunctioning controls resulted in a partial meltdown of the Unit 2 reactor and caused tens of thousands of Central Pennsylvania residents to be evacuated or to flee the area for several days in 1979. Unit 2 never was reopened and has been placed in monitored storage until the Unit 1 reactor is closed and decommissioned. In 2017, Exelon announced preliminary plans to close the facility unless a buyer was found; after no sale was reached, Unit 1 was officially shut down in December of 2019. Decommissioning is expected to last until 2079. LANCASTER ONLINE Related with Videos: 43rd Anniversary Of Three Mile Island Accident Massachusetts firefighters embark on PFAS turnout gear study Firefighters from Fall River and Hyannis joined their colleagues on Nantucket Monday in an effort to begin understanding just how much of the PFAS chemicals in their turnout gear is absorbed into their bodies. "My involvement really stems from having to bury two 30-year-old firefighters from cancer," said Jason Burns of the Fall River Fire Department. "Cancer has always been a part of our job, we get it. But something changed. Why are we now burying 30-year-olds? It used to be 50-, 60-, 70-year-olds that got cancer. Something changed and to me, it changed when they started pumping our gear full of these PFAS chemicals. You're seeing guys getting cancer younger, and the cancer is more aggressive." The firefighters took part in three tests. The first was intended to measure the overall level of PFAS in their blood, and see how it compares to that of national averages. THE INQUIRER AND MIRROR FDA OKs another Pfizer, Moderna COVID booster for 50 and up U.S. regulators on Tuesday authorized another COVID-19 booster for people age 50 and older, a step to offer extra protection for the most vulnerable in case the coronavirus rebounds. The Food and Drug Administration's decision opens a fourth dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to that age group at least four months after their previous booster. Until now, the FDA had cleared fourth doses only for people 12 and older who have severely weakened immune systems. The agency said this especially fragile group also can get an additional booster, a fifth shot. The latest expansion, regardless of people's health, allows an extra shot to millions more Americans — and the question is whether everyone who's eligible should rush out and get it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to weigh in. KDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
