VIDEO: Hundreds of people gathered to say their final goodbyes to Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider, who was laid to rest Saturday. Snider, 58, passed away Monday after a battle with cancer. He was laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. "Just by the display of how many people are here in attendance today shows how great of a leader he was to the community, to his department, to his family, and the impact he had on everybody he met," Edinburg Fire Department Lt. Octaviano Hernandez said. Chief Snider served the city of Edinburg for more than three decades, first joining the Edinburg Fire Department back in 1991. His passion and dedication to the job helped him quickly climb the ladder, and he was named chief just eight years after joining the department. Snider is remembered not only as a role model, but as a man who put others before himself. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO A reported structure fire near the Garrett Primary school is causing traffic delays early Tuesday morning. According to the Lufkin Fire Chief Jesse Moody, they received a call about a fully engulfed house fire on Martin Luther King Jr street just after 6 a.m. Upon arrival firefighters noticed the fire was coming out of 3 sides of the house. One person was in the house during the fire but was able to exit the house without injury. One of the responding firefighters sustained minor injuries according to Chief Moody. According to the Lufkin ISD official Facebook page, the reported house fire was near the Garrett Primary school and caused officials on the scene to divert traffic to alternative routes. According to officials, initial investigations show that the cause of the fire was an electrical issue. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN VIDEO: With rain chances nearly every day this week, there is some worry about flash flooding in the area. The Waco Fire Department is taking the time to make sure they're prepared for when they get the call for help. That entails getting out of the station, off the fire engines and into the water. The Brazos River was the scene for water rescue training for some of the members of the technical rescue team on Monday. "We would rather train in very swift water because the more difficult the training, the better we will be," said Lt. Billy Eary, who is a swiftwater instructor for Waco Fire. The technical rescue team does see an increase in water rescue calls during this time of year -- whether it stems from flooding, flash flooding, swift water, or drownings. Eary said it's important for them to get reps in, especially when the forecast may signal an increase in calls. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE PHOTOS: Crews were trying to contain a massive fire at a salt water disposal facility early Monday morning. The fire started just after midnight at a facility along U.S. Highway 83, just south of Asherton. Dimmitt County Fire and Rescue officials said when they arrived on the scene, they tried to put the fire out, but due to the size of the massive fire, they decided to let it burn itself out. The majority of the tanks have been damaged. The mixture of water, oil and gas was spilling into a nearby containment pond. The Dilley Fire Department brought in a larger water tanker to help fight the fire. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO |

PHOTOS: The eyes of the nation were on the Las Vegas valley, specifically Henderson, 35 years ago when a series of explosions at an industrial plant rocked the valley killing two people, leaving hundreds injured, causing more than $100 million in damage and impacting the NASA space shuttle program. In a 2018 interview with 8 News Now, retired Henderson Fire Captain Don Griffie was in one of the first engines heading to the reported fire at Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada, referred to as PEPCON, when the first explosion happened. "It blew, and we just reached our hands up and caught the windshield on the truck as it blew out," Griffie said. "He stopped immediately, and we took it from the side, and I just turned around, and I said ‘You know what, there ain't nothing there anymore, we're turning around and getting out of here.'" KLAS-TV CBS 8 LAS VEGAS Iowa no longer has a mandatory retirement age for reserve police officers and volunteer firefighters. Full and part-time police and firefighters in Iowa must retire at the age of 65. The governor has signed a bill into law that eliminates that age restriction for volunteer firefighters and trained reserve police officers who are volunteers, but can make arrests and investigate crimes. "We've all heard from Iowans the importance of good jobs and safe communities," Senator Mike Bousslot of Ankeny said earlier this year before the Senate unanimously approved the policy change. "This bill serves both of those goals. Many communities are already using reserve police officers and volunteer firefighters to keep those communities safe." The bill passed the House on an 86-12 vote last month and was signed into law by the governor last week. RADIO IOWA VIDEO: Firefighters in Ypsilanti are making a brief move back into their old firehouse that's since become a museum to celebrate the historic building and city's 200th birthday. The Michigan Firehouse Museum is opening doors up again for firefighters for a limited time. Originally built in 1898, the Ypsilanti Firehouse was closed and later revitalized as a museum. Now, the unique building is returning to its roots - for three days. To celebrate that rich history, plus the city's 200th birthday - for the next few days, firefighters will be bunking together on the second floor like old times complete with that old fire pole. "I was actually fortunate to work with firefighters that actually worked out of this building - and learned the history of the building - so for us, the opportunity to come back here is just great," Ypsilanti Fire Chief Ken Hobbs said. It's been more than 50 years since it was a working firehouse and, for the past 25, it's been home to the Michigan Firehouse Museum. WJBK-TV FOX 2 DETROIT VIDEO: Saindy Pyles thought she was going to die with her baby son, Liam, clutched to her chest as she flew home to Wichita from Miami after photographing a wedding. Midway through the flight Pyles said smoke filled the cabin after she saw sparks and fire burst from a bag in the seat directly behind her. "Honestly, I thought we were going to die," she said. "I looked and all I saw was flashes, just like flashes. I'm like, 'Oh my God, like, what is that?' And [the owner of the bag] is like, 'I don't know. I don't know.'" "Then I took my baby and I ran to the first class. I don't know how I got there. I think I hurt my arm." Quick action by the flight crew contained the smoky flashing lithium battery, which had begun smoldering in a carry-on bag right behind the seats where Pyles, her son and mother-in-law had been sitting. Airport fire trucks met the plane on the runway and everyone evacuated safely. KCAL-TV CBS 9 LOS ANGELES |
