VIDEO/PHOTOS: Flames caused heavy damage to the Denton Sewing Center early Monday morning. Firefighters responded to the business on Malone Street just before 3 a.m. Monday after reports of smoke were seen in the area, according to the Denton Fire Department. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Photos and videos shared by the Denton Fire Department on social media showed firefighters attacking the fire from the back of the building and on the roof. The Denton Sewing Center has been family-owned and operated since it opened 35 years ago. It sells and repairs sewing machines along with offering sewing classes. Owner Paul Weigenant said the retail portion of the store was a total loss.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires the Midland International Air and Space Port to conduct a disaster drill every three years. Due to COVID-19, Friday's drill looked a little different than in years past. Over 100 first responders from Midland and Odessa spent the morning treating "victims" of a mock plane crash. COVID-19 protocols restricted the number of people involved, so live victims were replaced with mannequins. While plane crashes are rare, both airport and emergency operations stressed how crucial it is to be prepared if one does occur. Firefighters, police, and EMTs arrived at today's mock plane crash and immediately set up a triage to treat victims.

VIDEO: Fort Worth Firefighters stepped in Monday night and rescued a woman who was swept away by floodwaters. Officials say this happened in a Fort Worth neighborhood, just north of Saginaw. The woman's minivan was swept away by the floodwaters near the intersection of Bent Oak Drive and Wagley Robertson Road. An NBC 5 viewer captured video of firefighters as they rescued the woman. She could be seen clinging to a tree branch as the water was rushing around her. Thankfully, crews were able to get to her and bring her to safety. She was not hurt but was a little shaken up.

Police officers on the scene tell 12News that no one was inside the home at the time of the fire. The fire appeared to have completely destroyed the home and damaged a house next door where at least one person was reported to have been home. That person was able to get out without injuries 12News was told.

Wolfforth Fire & EMS issued a warning about a man named Jesse "JD" Taylor on Saturday, May 22, after he claimed to be associated with the Wolfforth and Houston Fire Departments. On Monday, May 24, 51-year-old Jesse Dedmon Taylor of Wolfforth, was arrested by the Lubbock Police Department and charged with impersonating a public servant. He is being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond. Officials say he showed up at University Medical Center claiming to be a "hose man" who had left some equipment at the hospital, tried to gain entry to the emergency room using some kind of ID, and tried to examine the records of a 13-year-old patient. Then he tried to gain access to Covenant Hospital on Saturday. None of these attempts were successful.

Volunteers making the journey to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty made a stop in the Brazos Valley Monday. "Carry The Load" is a nonprofit that strives to bring awareness to the meaning of Memorial Day. To do that, volunteers walk and bike from Seattle to Dallas in a 32 day, 4,600-mile journey. Monday's leg of the trip brought the group through Bryan to Bryan Fire Station 2 where firefighters joined the team on the next leg of the trip down to Bryan Fire Station 1. Michael Garlock is the Assistant Relay Manager for this team and says it is an honor to be able to participate in something to show the community what the holiday truly means. "It's more than just having a mattress sale or having a great barbecue," said Garlock.

VIDEO: A massive fire damaged a South Nashville apartment complex Monday night, displacing residents and impacting at least 18 units. Emergency crews were called to the Brentwood Oaks Apartments around 8:15 p.m. before firefighters called for additional personnel to help manage the scene. The fire destroyed the entire third floor of the building and most of the second floor. The American Red Cross was called to help assist residents. The initial hydrants firefighters used did not provide enough pressure to battle the flames and water had to be drawn from the bottom of the hill at the complex. Gas to the building was cut off around 10 p.m. and NES also turned off power. The apartment complex is located near Old Hickory Boulevard and Nipper's Corner. One viewer told News 2 smoke and flames could be seen from several miles away.

As a way to help with emergencies on town trails, the Fire Department has started on a trail-marking project. Firefighter Christopher Fusco has been spearheading the project for over four years and first implemented it at Crescent Lake with the help of Firefighter Ryan Pulver. The markers are placed about every hundred feet. All trails at Crescent Lake are marked and there are two large information signs — one in the parking lot — that give a brief explanation of the signs. The signs also have a QR code that links to a town website with a map of the trails, a more in-depth explanation of the trail markers and a list of hiking safety tips. "If someone gets lost or injured and they are near one of the signs or they remember the closest sign they saw last, they call 911, they tell us what number they are near and we have our corresponding map and we'll be able to get to them as quickly as possible," Fusco said.

In just eight days in January, an EMT and a paramedic with Beaufort County EMS each racked up more than 140 hours doing a job that required quick thinking and reactions at any time of day or night, from rushing to transport trauma patients to the hospital to responding to life-threatening medical emergencies. Three times, their initial, 24-hour shifts ended. And three times, rather than clock out, they started another. These extended 48-hour shifts are the norm rather than the exception in Beaufort County, budget documents and schedules reviewed by The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette show. The newspapers' analysis reveals the county's EMS department has blown through its overtime budget repeatedly in recent years, overspending by millions of dollars while potentially compromising worker and patient safety, employees and experts warn.

The annual National Memorial Day Concert airs this Sunday at 8 p.m. on PBS. It will include a 20th anniversary remembrance of 9/11 presented by Steve Buscemi. "I went to D.C. almost 20 years ago the year after 9/11; I was asked to do the 9/11 tribute then because they knew I'm a former firefighter with Engine 55 in Manhattan," Buscemi said. "Here we are 20 years later. I'm actually not coming to D.C. I've pretaped my tribute at Ground Zero in front of the Freedom Tower and 9/11 museum, so I'm very honored." He'll never forget the heartbreak of watching the Twin Towers fall. "It was awful," Buscemi said. "Knowing how many people work there and how many people that were lost in the buildings, that was so overwhelming. It was really hard to comprehend. It wasn't until I started hearing the numbers of firefighters that were missing that it hit home for me, because now I knew that I would know people who were lost."
