VIDEO: Another North Texas fire department is mourning the loss of one of their own. Wade Cannon joined the Flower Mound Fire Department six-and-a-half years ago. He was a firefighter paramedic. "Very energetic young man just starting out his career in fire service," said Capt. Tim Mackling, president of the Flower Mound Professional Firefighters Association. Mackling says they met when Cannon was a rookie. He describes Cannon as a character and a fighter, especially after being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in September 2020. "His fighting attitude kicked in. He and Chelsea got right into the trenches and started fighting for his life," said Mackling. Cannon's wife Chelsea, his parents, and the fire department family joined the battle. A video was made about his journey titled, "Wade's Fight is My Fight."

This week's Be Remarkable takes us out to Troy where a volunteer fire chief has dedicated more than three decades of his life to serving his community. "I've lived here forever and I've seen all the things he has done, and there have been occasions 2 or 3 times where an ambulance had to come to my house, and he was always there. You can depend on him." Heraldine Earley is a force of nature and has seen this week's winner, Jimmy Jackson, in action since he was a, as she puts it, "youngster," and she speaks the truth. "I started in 1976 when I was a sophomore in high school, 16 years old. Back then, you could leave school to go to a call.", Jimmy Jackson Heraldine says as Jimmy grew to the role of chief he even took money out of his own pocket sometimes to help people he served on volunteer fire calls.

VIDEO: Nearly 100 firefighters were needed to put out a large warehouse fire in north Houston early Tuesday. The Houston Fire Department responded to the fire at Martin's Lumber & Roofing Supply on Jensen Drive just north of 610 near the Eastex Freeway around 5:30 a.m. as black smoke began billowing from every window in the business. A big chunk of the business was damaged before crews were able to get the flames under control. Crews continue to monitor for hot spots. HFD said they're monitoring the air quality and that there's no cause for concern after neighbors worried about what exactly was burning. Crews said a large amount of stored lumber was burned as well as loud pops from propane tanks that had to be removed.

PHOTO: College Station firefighters credit working smoke detectors for limiting damage and causing no injuries in three fires in four days that took place in rental housing. On Saturday before sunrise on Autumn Circle near April Bloom, a neighbor heard a smoke detector. Firefighters who smelled smoke from a downstairs unit found heavy black smoke. What started as a kitchen fire extinguished itself due to a lack of oxygen. No people were in the apartment and firefighters rescued two cats. Friday evening, CSFD responded to a two story four-plex on Potomac near Southwest Parkway. Investigators are still looking into the origin and cause of what was reported to 9-1-1 as a kitchen fire. The Red Cross assisted with displaced residents.

Laredo's first responders are asking the community to show their support. The National Fallen Firefighter Foundation has dedicated this week to fallen firefighters and Laredo is one of many communities that is joining the cause. The Laredo Fire Department is asking the community to light a red light outside their homes to show support to our first responders. The department says that this is an important cause for them as the department has also been affected by losses. "We, personally, at the Laredo Fire Department have lost two of our very own throughout this pandemic. And we'd like to have the community help us out in showing these families that their family members are remembered that they are recognized that they did not die in vain, and their duty and their sacrifice is really important," said Ricardo Oliva.

A Wichita Falls man is charged with interfering with fire officials at a vehicle fire. Police arrested Kevin Wilson Friday evening, Sept. 30, 2022, and charged him with interference with public duties. Firefighters were fighting a vehicle fire near Harrison Street and Virginia Drive. A police officer said he arrived to help direct traffic and said he saw Wichita Falls Assistant Fire Marshal Jared Burchett and a firefighter struggling with a man, later identified as Kevin Lynn Wilson. The officer ran to their assistance and helped the fire marshal take Wilson to the ground and get him in handcuffs. Wilson suffered a minor injury when his head struck a piece of concrete. Burchett told the officer he was investigating the fire and had to tell Wilson to back away from the vehicle multiple times, but Wilson ignored his commands and walked past firefighters and got inside the vehicle.

The Houston Fire Department is battling a large hardware store fire on the north side of town. Firefighters are responding to the fire at Martin's Hardware & Lumber on Jensen Drive just north of 610 near the Eastex Freeway. Crews arrived around 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the flames, but continue battling the fire. No injuries have been reported and black smoke can still be seen billowing into the sky as crews work to put the fire out. HFD is asking the public to avoid the area at this time.

VIDEO: At Fire Station 2 in Forest Park, you would typically see the fire engine out on the driveway. The chief tells FOX 5 Atlanta, the department has canceled its open-door policy with the community after a thief stole the Jaws of Life off a fire truck. "We have the fire station doors open. We have the fire trucks parked on our aprons because we want that open door policy," said Chief Latosha Clemons. "We want the citizens to know that we are there for them. All they have to do is walk up to a fire station. But now since this incident we have to keep our doors closed. We have to keep our trucks in the bay."

VIDEO: Behind the wheel of a fire engine is the last place Chase Vaughn ever thought he'd be. "It's a whole different level of responsibility, and a lot more math involved," he said with a laugh. It's a job he's grown to love. He just didn't think a guy like him could actually be a firefighter. "As a kid, you see firefighters, but as a young Black kid, I didn't see Black firefighters," Vaughn told CBS Colorado's Kelly Werthmann. "So, for me at least, it didn't click that was an obtainable job for me to do." So, growing up, he chased down a different dream. Vaughn followed his love of football from Smoky Hill High School in Aurora to Colorado State University in Pueblo. Eventually, he made it to the ultimate hometown team. "I grew up around the Broncos and Broncos fans. For that to be the team that gave me my shot, that was awesome," Vaughn said.

VIDEO: Data from the National Fire Protection Association shows overexertion, stress and medical issues has been the leading cause of death for firefighters. A new state grant is helping fund a project to help keep them safe. Firefighters use a specific type of jacket on the job, but the University of Cincinnati is working on adding different elements to better protect them in their work environment, and it's all thanks to a $1.2 million grant. Glendale Fire Chief William Jetter has been a firefighter for the past 44 years. It's a career he said he took on because of his love for helping people. "We're all volunteers that left their jobs and aided the community," he said. "I like giving back and that's what I've been ever since." A lot has changed since he started 44 years ago. That's especially the case when it comes to PPE.

VIDEO: A Louisiana firefighter has a new lease on life after she received a gift like no other from an unlikely hero thousands of miles away. Our story starts with a Denmark woman named Marianne Poulsen. For more than two years, Marianne's husband, Michael, was in desperate need of a kidney transplant but much to her dismay, she was not an organ donor match. Although enrolled in a Scandinavian donor exchange program, the couple was unable to find a match until they enrolled Michael in an international registry that paired him with a donor in Ohio. In May of this year, Michael underwent the procedure that would end up saving his life. As part of the program, Marianne joined the donor list so even though she may not have been able to help her husband, maybe she could give someone else a life-changing gift.
