Kevin Woyjeck, 21, was one of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot firefighters killed while trapped in a fire in Arizona in 2013. Released in 2017, a movie called "Only the Brave" highlighted the men's bravery, making Woyjecks father especially proud. "Kevin was the ninth firefighter in our family. I retired from Los Angeles County Fire Department after 37 years, and he was following in my footsteps," said Joe Woyjeck, Kevin Woyjecks father. That's why Joe knows the true importance of firefighter safety protocols. Reports show so far in 2022, there have been 70 line-of-duty deaths in the U.S. There were 141 deaths in 2021. In 2004, agencies across the country convened with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and created 16 life safety initiatives.

A gunman shot three people, including two first responders, at the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo in Texas, before he was shot and wounded by sheriff's deputies, authorities said. Just before 11 p.m. Monday, a man opened fire on Potter County deputies working off-duty at the fair in Amarillo, Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas said. Thomas said the "male suspect opened fire on the deputies, striking a deputy and an off-duty firefighter, also working at the fair, and a bystander." Deputies returned fire, wounding the suspect. The deputy, firefighter and bystander were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. The gunman was taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as life-threatening. Thomas did not identify any of the victims or the suspect.

Fire crews said one person was hurt in a fire early Tuesday morning that burned a trailer, an RV and a car. Crews from Travis County ESD 2 and Round Rock Fire fought the fire which broke out around 1:40 a.m. on Connie Street southwest of Grand Avenue Parkway. According to the Travis County ESD 2 Assistant Chief Mark Moellenberg, the person who lives in the RV went to the hospital with minor burns from the fire. No pets were harmed. Moellenberg said all three structures suffered extensive damage. No homes caught fire, Moellenberg said. Moellenberg told KXAN it took crews an hour to bring the fire under control, and crews were still mopping up hot spots as of 3:15 a.m. There is no word on where the fire started or what caused it.

The Dallas Firefighter Museum is back open after last month's flooding caused heavy damage. More than a foot of water rushed inside the building during that storm. It forced the museum to shut down. The building has been standing since 1907. While firefighters rushed to save people when floodwaters rose across North Texas last week, the Dallas Firefighters Museum across from Fair Park was damaged. The museum is welcoming visitors again, but extensive repairs are still needed and they will be costly. "It's kept afloat as we speak. A lot of firefighters past and present, they sign a pledge card when they first come to work donating $5 or $10 a month. That's basically what keeps it going," said Bubba Benningfield, a retired Dallas firefighter. A benefit was held at Willie's Lounge Bar in Dallas Sunday to help pay for the renovations.

On September 18, 2021, 75 dogs died in a fire at a pet-boarding facility in Georgetown, Texas. Since, fire code changes have been made to help protect animals in boarding facilities. "Everybody came together, everybody hurt, you know, and we all cried," Wag Heaven co-owner Jusak Yang Bernhard said. Fiona was one of the 75 dogs who died in a fire at the Ponderosa Pet Resort in Georgetown last year. "One-hundred percent shock, obviously I was distraught and upset and a little bit guilty on my end,' Fiona's owner Kelly Thyssen said. ‘It was just kind of a last-minute trip that we went out of town, so I felt a little guilty of like well, we should have stayed home, we didn't need to go out of town." Thyssen said she had been using this facility to board her dogs for about eight years and never had any issues. She said to this day, she doesn't blame them.

PHOTOS: A woman is in critical condition Monday, Sept. 19, after being rescued from her back deck during a raging house fire. The woman, whose name has not been released, was trapped on the deck of the Cutlerville home. Kent County sheriff's deputies could not reach the woman but firefighters from Cutlerville, Dutton Township and Kentwood were able to rescue her while deputies sprayed water from fire hoses. Sheriff's deputies and Cutlerville firefighters responded around 12:20 a.m. to a report of a house explosion and fire in the 1500 block of Fairwood Court SE. The Sheriff's Department released body-worn camera footage of the response. Sheriff's deputies reached the scene first but could not get to the woman. They rushed fire hoses to the back yard, and started spraying the deck, while firefighters rescued her.

VIDEO: An elderly volunteer firefighter underwent surgery Monday and remains in a hospital in Columbus after a rollover crash that happened Sunday. Middleport Fire Chief Jeff Darst tells WSAZ the 72-year-old firefighter suffered fractures in his lower leg. Darst says this could've easily been fatal, and they're just grateful it wasn't worse. The chief says while returning from a call on Storys Run Road in Cheshire, the pumper truck the firefighter was driving rolled over the side of a hill, throwing the driver out and pinning his leg underneath the truck. Nobody else was on board. Other firefighters also on their way back saw the truck had flipped and used air bags to lift the truck and pull the firefighter out. He was then flown to a hospital.

Denver firefighters now have a second option for covering cancer-related medical costs. The Denver City Council unanimously approved a bill that allows firefighters to join the Voluntary Cancer Benefits Award Program (VCAP) set up by the Colorado Firefighter Heart and Cancer Benefits Trust. This measure would exist in place of the existing workers' compensation program set up by the city, but there are a few key differences between the two programs that make the new one more attractive to city employees, city officials said."Instead of fighting to get the coverage, VCAP is presumptive that cancer was caused by firefighting," Devron McMillin, Denver's Director of Risk Management and Workers' Compensation said in an August Finance and Governance Committee meeting.
