Confidential Fire Chief Recruitment: City of St. Cloud - St. Cloud, MN
A man is being charged after firefighters saved his life and then he reportedly pointed a rifle at them. Houston firefighters responded to a home on Glen Lee near Glenvine in northeast Houston just before midnight Tuesday. When they arrived, firefighters used Narcan to save a man from an overdose, HFD officials said. When he came to, the man reportedly got agitated, grabbed a gun and told the firefighters to leave the house, according to HFD. "Make sure nobody is going to respond actually up to the residence. He did come out with a rifle," a first responder said on an emergency call. "Yes confirming, they did come outside with the rifle. We also have a female, his wife, at the residence." Firefighters retreated and called Houston police. Officers surrounded the home and the man gave up peacefully, according to HPD. "We're glad all firefighters are OK," HPD Lt. M. Contreras said.

No one was hurt or injured in Tuesday's fire at a tank battery complex site eight miles east of Fort Stockton, just south of mile marker 266. All six Fort Stockton Volunteer Fire Department fire trucks responded to a call at 1:32 p.m. on April 20 after multiple workers in the area witnessed the fire start. Fort Stockton Fire Department Chief Jessie Dominguez noted the cause of the fire was unknown as workers did not have a visual on the tank at the time the fire started. "There were people working at the complex. They were there working cleanup on some other tanks so that's why they don't know either why it caught on fire," Dominguez said. Firefighters had the fire put out by 6:20 p.m. after the complex, which stores crude oil, was completely burned to the ground. "We had to wait until it kind of died before we put the fire out. We had to sit there for a while," Dominguez added.

An East Side home has been destroyed and a neighboring house has been damaged by an early-morning fire, the San Antonio Fire Department said. The fire was called in just before 8 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 1900 block of Lamar Street, not far from North Walters Street and Interstate 35. According to Joe Arrington, a public information officer with the San Antonio Fire Department, firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming from the front of one of the homes. Arrington said firefighters tried to make a quick attack on the fire due to heavy wind gusts, but the wind still blew the fire to a nearby house. Fire crews eventually made their way inside both homes and put the fire out, despite experiencing difficulty due to a downed power line, Arrington said. Everyone from inside the homes made it safely out. Fire investigators are now talking to both homeowners and are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Houston police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a burning travel trailer early Wednesday morning. A fire was reported outside a home in the 5400 block of Bunte on the city's northeast side. Firefighters arrived and found a small travel trailer burning. The fire was quickly put out, and inside the trailer they found the remains of a woman. Houston police homicide investigators are working with arson investigators to determine a cause of the fire. Sgt. Simmons with HPD said the man who lives at the home told police that he had met the woman the night before and offered her a place to stay. He said he was not home at the time of the fire. Authorities are still trying to figure out the woman's identity.

A woman in her 40s had to be extracted from her vehicle after she crashed on the city's West Side late Tuesday night, San Antonio police said. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. in the 300 block of Wilson Boulevard, not far from Culebra Road and Cincinnati Avenue. According to police, the woman was traveling on Wilson Boulevard in a sport utility vehicle with her young daughter when, for an unknown reason, she rolled the vehicle into VIA bus stop and fence. Police said the child was able to get herself out of the SUV, but the woman had to be cut out by firefighters after they first removed the roof. The child was not hurt in the crash, police said. The woman was taken by EMS to University Hospital for minor injuries. The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A rescued puppy found her forever home with the Dallas firefighter who rescued her. The pup was found stuck in the engine compartment of an SUV about a week ago in the White Rock area. It took firefighters two hours to rescue the dog. They had to remove one of the vehicle's tires to get to her. Dallas Fire-Rescue Firefighter James Hayes, who was involved in the rescue, adopted the dog and named her Grace. "We were all really invested in making sure the dog was taken care of and I'm really thankful it's a good story. You know, when our public servants have to go out they see a lot of the worst and this really turned into a great story," said Kari Keeton, the SUV's owner. Firefighter Hayes lives on a ranch with lots of animals so Grace will have plenty of room to run around and play.

VIDEOS: A massive fire broke out at a historic Domino Sugar refinery in Baltimore on Tuesday, resulting in a large storage dome collapsing under the flames. Helicopter video posted on Twitter by reporters for WJZ showed the storage dome collapsed, with fires still burning at either end. Other photos and videos of the fire showed smoke plumes wafting across much of the city as firefighters continued to battle the blaze. A tweet from a local firefighter's union indicated that first responders were battling the blaze with trucks as well as firefighting boats dispatched around Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The Hill has reached out to Domino Sugar for comment on the fire. The historic refinery, and its iconic Domino sign, have been a landmark in Baltimore since the early 1950s. Company officials were in the process of replacing the aging neon sign with an updated version that was set to be unveiled officially on July 4.

Firefighters answer the call for help daily. Now there's an app to help them when they're in distress. Redline Rescue is a peer-to-peer support portal that connects firefighters who need mental health help with others. They can log on, answer a few screening questions via drop-down lists, and within minutes, locate peers to talk. "It was surprising how many of our family members here were suffering from what they see, from what they experienced," said Lt. Dustin Hawkins, who works for Indian River Fire Rescue. Hawkins suffered in silence for more than a year after an explosive accident aboard a marine unit when he was in his mid-30s left him burned and scarred. After his accident, the lieutenant, who also serves as a chaplain for both the department and union, "got back on the truck as quickly as possible." He was still healing, with skin grafts sticking to his uniform.

Mobile hotspots should connect people to the internet — not the local fire department. That's why Verizon recalled 2.5 million Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots. The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall alert: "The lithium ion battery in the hotspots can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards." And this has happened, as the notice says, "Verizon has received 15 reports of devices overheating, including six reports of fire damage to bedding or flooring and two reports of minor burn injuries." The alert includes the rare safety tip if you have to use the product. Consumers should turn it on, plug it in and get an automatic software update that will allow the device's ID number to be viewed on the scrolling screen and one that keeps the hotspot from charging while it's on and plugged into a power source. After getting that update, turn the hotspot off when it's not being used and unplug it.

Henrico Firefighters are giving back to kids in the Highland Springs community with baseball. They hosted a clinic over the weekend as part of a new partnership to support the community they live in. The firefighters stepped up to bat to teach new techniques to kids in the Highland Springs Little League. William Boger, the President of Henrico Professional Firefighters' Association and firefighter of over 18 years in the county, said he just wants to give back. "These volunteers [with Highland Springs Little League] here are doing such a phenomenal job getting this out in the community and trying to draw interest," Boger said. "They have had the largest registration they've ever had " In this partnership, the firefighters have also donated equipment, sponsorships and scholarships to the program — which was re-established in 2019.

In 2018 there were about 181,500 highway vehicle fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The vast majority of those were gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. For whatever reason, we expect and accept that. But with EV fires it's different. The National Traffic Safety Board addressed these EV fires in January with a report noting that there are two main safety issues. First, the inadequacy of vehicle manufacturers' emergency response guides, and the gaps in safety standards and research related to high-voltage lithium-ion batteries involved in high-sped, high-severity crashes. Additionally, EVs pose a risk of electric shock to emergency responders, and then there's the thermal runaway problem. That is a process that is accelerated by increased temperatures, in turn releasing energy that further increase temperature. It's an uncontrolled positive feedback loop.
