Austin Fire Department sees its most diverse candidate pool ever, but there's more work to do This year, the Austin Fire Department said it has gotten a 10% increase in interested African Americans compared to 2019. Its largest demographic group is Hispanic candidates — a more than 21% increase. Overall, nearly 75% of people who submitted a cadet interest card are diversity targets, which means they belong to a minority group. That includes Black, Hispanic, Asian and female Austinites. "We never had that number before," said Austin Fire Chief Joel Baker. "I think the highest we have had in the history of Austin of minorities that have shown interest is 59-point-something." He hopes diversity on the front end of hiring will also help down the line, so there are more of those people to promote to higher positions. After expressing their interest through a cadet interest card, candidates then have to submit an application. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Details released for Seguin firefighter's final honors Officials have released details for the ceremony honoring a fallen Seguin firefighter. Firefighter/Paramedic Roger Dean III died from complications due to COVID-19 on Friday in a Houston hospital following a lengthy battle. A funeral with full honors for Dean is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center, 1315 E. Cedar St. Prior to the funeral, a procession will leave from Central Fire Station, 110 E Elm St., at 10 a.m. and make its way via River Street, College Street, Lamar Avenue and Cedar Street to the PAC. Fire apparatus from outside agencies will lead the procession from Central Fire Station to King Street, where they will head north and make their way to the Seguin ISD Central Office parking lot, Chief Dale Skinner said. The march, led by the Seguin Fire Department's 1922 fire truck carrying Dean, will continue on College Street to Lamar with Seguin firefighters, Dean's wife and a pipe and drum corp following. THE SEGUIN GAZETTE Potter County Fire and Rescue is now better prepared for calls after new ISO score Potter County Fire and Rescue is now better equipped to respond to calls, according to their new ISO score. The evaluation consist of a pumper test, hose test, aerial ladder and elevating platform test, as well as classroom and field training. It is given by the Insurance Services Office and sometimes has an impact on insurance rates. The score is based on a one through 10 scale that measures how well a fire department can respond to the community, with one being the best and 10 the worse. Potter County Fire and Rescue previously had a score of six within the five mile radius from a station, and a nine in the areas further than the five mile radius. The department says after a lot of effort, training and funds to buy much needed equipment, they now have a four in both areas. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Follow Up: Tesla says it's likely someone was in driver's seat before deadly crash in Montgomery County Tesla said it's likely there was someone in the driver's seat before the crash that killed two people in one of their electric cars near The Woodlands, according to a discussion on their Q1 2021 earnings call Monday. At issue has been whether autopilot was engaged and if someone was behind the wheel at the time of the wreck. Local authorities have said there was not. According to Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman, investigators were "100% sure" that no one was driving. But Tesla CEO Elon Musk has disputed both of those claims, saying after the April 17 crash that there was no way autopilot was used before the 2019 Model S ran off Hammock Dunes Place in the Carlton Woods Creekside subdivision just west of The Woodlands. The vehicle hit a tree and burst into flames. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Suspected Serial Arsonist Arrested, Accused of Setting More Than 20 Fires in Dallas A Dallas man has been charged with felony arson after an investigation into a series of small fires by Dallas Fire-Rescue. According to Dallas Fire Rescue, units were dispatched to a 911 call regarding a dumpster fire at 1408 Elm Street, near the CVS in Downtown Dallas, on Saturday at approximately 11:23 p.m. Officials said when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found large dumpster on fire and began working to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters were able to put out the fire without incident, and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, what seemed like just another dumpster fire was in fact the culmination of weeks of hard work by the Fire Investigation Division. On April 19, fire investigators said they began to believe they were dealing with an arsonist after two small fires were set at 1800 Main Street and 325 North St. Paul Street within 15 minutes of each other. 4-Alarm Fire Destroys Historic New Hampshire Condominium Building A deck fire at a historic home in Downtown Concord kept Concord firefighters busy on Wednesday and eventually led to four alarms and — and fire crews from around the capital region assisting city firefighters. Around 12:30 a.m., firefighters were sent to 32 Merrimack St., a four-unit building, for a report of flames seen from a deck. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the fire on the second-floor deck that was "rapidly extending" into a third floor and attic, according to Sean Brown, chief of the Concord Fire Department. "Companies initiated search operations and an aggressive interior attack," he said. "It was determined that the five occupants of the building were able to self-evacuate." A cat was also rescued by a Concord firefighter. Due to the size and age of the building — it was constructed in 1880, according to city records, the fire spread easily via "multiple void spaces between walls and floors, creating a very challenging firefighting conditions," Brown added. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Historic bell salvaged after Vermont church burns VIDEO: A church in Vermont's Orange County spent Tuesday working to salvage what it could following a massive overnight fire. One of the artifacts pulled from the rubble of the Williamstown Federated Church is linked to a famous name in American history. "That's an incredible historic artifact," Stephen Morse, a church organist and historian, said of the bell that was removed from the site and stored for safe-keeping. Markings show the church's bell was made in the famous Boston foundry of Paul Revere. t was badly blackened, and the wood in its frame charred, but the important link to the founding of the congregation in the 1700s was saved. Church members said they believe it can be cleaned and restored. "We have a lot of heritage in our church," said church treasurer Nancy Avery, who added that the church also had an unusual and historic organ that was lost to the fire. WPTZ-TV NBC 5 PLATTSBURGH ‘Once in a lifetime:' Old greyhound track in Florida becomes firefighter training haven PHOTOS: Two inches of water filled what was once the poker space in the old Bonita Springs Greyhound Racing building off Bonita Beach Road. "We're going straight into the room on the left," one Estero firefighter said into his mask radio. An ominous orange glow bled from a back office. "Moving in," another replied. "There's no more hose, no more hose," said one firefighter, manning the pipe connection 100 feet away. One minute passed. "Fire out," the first firefighter said. The crew of four extinguished the simulated fire in less than three minutes. They walked back out of the emergency exit to the full parking lot — to a cacophony of fire engines from 19 departments across Lee County. The crews all came to exploit the final days of the 250,000-square-foot monolith built 70 years ago. A new building, the Bonita Springs Poker Room, opened six months ago and sits much closer to the road. NAPLES DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
