Lake Worth Officers Save Family From Overnight House Fire VIDEO: Two North Texas police officers are being hailed as heroes after they saved a family from a late-night house fire. The Lake Worth Police Department said officers Myers and Valdez were "in the right place at the right time" when they noticed flames shooting from the roof of a home shortly before 1 a.m. Monday. "It's instinct, it's just go, you know," Ofc. Christian Myers said. "Our thought was to get this family out and safe." Video captured on the officers' body cameras showed the two knocking on the home's doors and windows in an effort to wake those inside. Shortly after, the officers made it inside the house before safely evacuating two adults, two children and a dog. "It feels so much better not having to do a death notification," said Ofc. Antonia Valdez, in reference to the worst-case scenario first responders often encounter. "It just feels amazing." Firefighters from Lake Worth and Fort Worth put out the fire and tended to the displaced family. No one was hurt. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Austin fire damages House Park Bar-B-Que VIDEO: Austin fire crews are trying to figure out what started a fire that damaged a legendary barbecue restaurant. The fire happened after midnight Dec. 1 at House Park Bar-B-Que on West 12th Street near North Lamar Boulevard. According to the Austin Fire Department, 30 firefighters responded to put out the fire. The department shared photos of the fire on Twitter. The restaurant suffered extensive fire and smoke damage, AFD said. According to the restaurant's website, it's been in business since 1943 and is Austin's oldest barbecue pit. The owners have started a GoFundMe with a $100,000 goal to help it rebuild. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Houston firefighters return home after weeks of helping COVID-19 patients in El Paso Five Houston firefighters have returned home after roughly five weeks of helping coronavirus patients in El Paso. "We worked seven days a week, 12-hour shifts and the Houston Fire Department we took the night shifts," Capt. Beau Moreno said. Seven HFD members traveled across the state on Oct. 23 to help with the surge of COVID-19 cases in the region. Two are still there. "Every patient that we saw was COVID positive," Moreno said. The captain made the trip expecting to help transport COVID-19 patients but he ended up working primarily as a nurse, tending to more than a dozen people. "They were too sick to go home because they required medication and oxygen but they weren't sick enough to be into like an ICU bed," Moreno said. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Corpus Christi Fire Department teams up with local church to host recruitment event If you are one of those people who rush toward an emergency to help someone in need, you might just make the cut for the Corpus Christi Fire Department. On Tuesday, the CCFD held a recruitment meeting for those who are thinking about joining the fire academy. It was held at Brooks AME Church on North Port Avenue, where Reverend Adam Carrington opened this house of worship for another type of community outreach. "I've been trying to find my passion. A career. And this seemed like the perfect opportunity," Adam Galicia said. "A little discipline doesn't hurt anyone, and that's what I want," Giovanna Barrios said. Barrios is currently attending school at Del Mar College to become a paramedic. She also wants to become a firefighter. "I want a challenge, and if I can pass through it, I want to be that one person other females can look up to," Barrios said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI What's that odd smell in the Austin air? It's a common phenomenon If you're smelling something strange in the outside air around Austin, the Austin Fire Department doesn't want you to be alarmed or call 911. The natural gas-like smell is coming from the Luling oil fields and it's common for this time of year, according to fire officials. The odor from the oil fields can be smelled in the area when the south winds return after a cold, still night. The sulfur smell collects at the ground instead of dissipating like normal, so in the morning the wind brings up the smell and it spreads across the city, AFD says. AFD says it has received over 100 calls for the odor this year, but there is no need to call 911 for general outdoor odors. However, if you're smelling natural gas inside your home, you should call 911. In recent years, AFD has received reports of the Luling smell from south Austin to Pflugerville. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Firefighter serves up one-of-a-kind flavors at Tongue in Cheek Ice Cream in Richardson Brett Smith had been working as a Richardson firefighter for more than 20 years when he opened his own ice cream shop in July 2019. The name, Tongue in Cheek Ice Cream, is a nod to his fellow firefighters' knack for wit and irony. "One thing about firemen—we are highly sarcastic," he said. Smith's love for making ice cream came during a short stint working in a local ice cream shop. He eventually found the location for his own shop off Arapaho Road in the fire district where he worked. Tongue in Cheek offers 24 flavors ranging from traditional, such as chocolate and vanilla, to unique, such as Banana Cream Pie and Caramel Crack. The ice cream is made in-house, and the flavors, which change seasonally, are based on Smith's own ideas as well as customer suggestions. During Hatch pepper season, Tongue in Cheek adds a Hatch pepper butter pecan flavor to the menu. COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER RICHARDSON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters frustrated to be left out of CDC advisory panel's first round of COVID vaccine recipients The CDC's immunization advisory panel voted Tuesday to first give the COVID-19 vaccine to health care personnel and long-term care facility residents. Some firefighters feel they should have been included in that list. "I think it's not the correct decision," Prince George's County firefighter and paramedic Theresa Alexander said. "I strongly believe for firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, we should be given top priority along with hospital workers and health care workers...because for many patients, we're the first link throughout the pandemic. Our personnel are the ones treating them prior to being transported, and that includes things like breathing treatments, airway procedures, which certainly increases our risk." As it stands, firefighters are listed in the second group to receive the vaccine, along with other essential workers, like those in the education and food sectors, correctional officers, and police officers, according to the advisory group's presentation. WUSA-TV CBS 9 WASHINGTON DC Former Long Island firefighter develops firehose fitness tool, wins big on 'Shark Tank' VIDEO: A former volunteer firefighter from Long Island just won big on ABC's "Shark Tank" for her new fitness device, which was inspired by her time as a firefighter. Sarah Apgar, of Port Washington, is the creator of Fitfighter and the Steel Hose. When Apgar joined the Halesite Volunteer Fire Department in 2012, she noticed the firehouse didn't have a structured strength training program. Apgar served as a platoon commander in Iraq with the U.S. Army, so she was familiar with regimented strength and weight training programs. She began using firehoses around the firehouse to train her colleagues. Throughout the next few years, Apgar began developing a fitness device based upon the firehose. She used real firehose material and filled it with recycled steel shot. She called it the Steel Hose. The longer the hose, the heavier it is. They range in weight from 5 pounds to 50 pounds. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK New floating fire station to arrive in San Francisco Thursday A huge floating fire station will make its permanent home in San Francisco early Thursday morning. A new Fireboat Station 35 will house the San Francisco Fire Department's three fireboats and rescue watercraft, replacing the existing 105-year-old fire station on the Embarcadero, according to the city's Public Works department. The existing building is "vastly undersized" to meet the fire department's current needs, and does not meet seismic-safety standards. San Francisco Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson said in a statement that disasters like the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the massive fire that destroyed a warehouse on Pier 45 back in May and constant water rescues performed by the department demonstrate the importance of the new station. SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Starbucks Is Giving Away Free Coffee to First Responders Throughout December Starbucks is giving thanks to first responders and health care workers on the front lines of the fight against the spread of COVID-19 with a free cup of coffee. As cases continue to rise across much of the country, Starbucks is offering a free tall brewed coffee (hot or iced) to front-line workers at participating U.S. Starbucks stores now through December 31. This offer is "to show appreciation for those keeping our communities safe during COVID-19," a Starbucks representative said, and is good all month long. So those doctors and nurses in need of a caffeine boost may want to visit their local Starbucks every morning (or afternoon!) this month. Those eligible for the free tall coffee offer include front-line health care providers and first responders, such as doctors, nurses, public health workers, pharmacists, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, police officers, dentists and dental hygienists, mental health workers, hospital staff and active-duty military. No official ID is necessary. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Classic engine returns to Florida town PHOTOS: How many cities do you know of that showcase a caboose, fire truck and tractors in their downtown sector? There is at least one — the city of Winter Garden, which recently saw the return of an iconic piece of its fire department history. The 1954 American La France fire engine No. 1 is back in the space it shares with a 1907 citrus sprayer, 1948 railroad caboose, a Case grove tractor and a Fordson tractor — all surrounding the Winter Garden Heritage Museum. "The fire truck has been a part of Winter Garden for many years," said Frank Chase, president of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation board of directors. "During that time it has had several different lives. The Heritage Foundation is grateful to have it back on display for everyone to enjoy and interact with." The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation started displaying the historical equipment in 1998 and ended up with the five currently sitting out front. A fundraising campaign began in 2016 to restore the four smaller pieces. ORANGE OBSERVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
