VIDEO: According to mental health experts, studies have shown that first responders face a 30% risk of having mental health struggles as opposed to the regular population at 20%. Due to the nature of their jobs, fire departments across the country have been seeking help after being in stressful situations. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported firefighters are at a higher risk of developing behavioral health conditions such as depression and PTSD than the general public. As the years go by, fire departments have been stepping up their mental health initiatives due to the nature of their job. The Laredo Fire Department is just one of many entities that is taking part in this movement. Laredo Fire Department Assistant Chief Silvestre Rodriguez Jr. said their efforts started back in 2010. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO A man died from injuries sustained when he was reportedly trapped inside a burning home Monday evening in Grand Prairie. The Grand Prairie Fire department responded to a single-story home on fire in the 3600 block of Park Ridge Drive, near Corn Valley Road and South Grand Prairie High School, shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, a press release from the department said. Firefighters said they began searching the building for a person reportedly trapped inside and found a man inside a bedroom of the home. First responders brought him to a hospital in critical condition where he later died. The Dallas County Medical Examiner has not yet released his identity and the Grand Prairie Fire Department is still investigating what caused the fire. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS The Lometa Volunteer Fire Department will purchase new emergency rescue equipment thanks to a $32,464 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Hamilton County Electric Cooperative. The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $8,116 in matching funds from the department, will enable Lometa VFD to replace an outdated hydraulic Jaws of Life set with a new battery-powered model. "Our fire chief bought the current extrication equipment when he started with the department back in the ‘80s," said Mary Garcia, department secretary. "It still works, but you have to hook hydraulic sets up to motors every time you use them, and those are heavy and bulky." LOWER COLORADO RIVER AUTHORITY Garland officials plan to spend an estimated $2.8 million next year to renovate the sleeping areas at four of the city's 11 fire stations. The renovations are part of the North Texas community's $423.7 million bond program that voters approved in 2019, a city spokesperson told The Dallas Express in an email. According to several Texas Department of License and Regulation filings, Fire Station No.11 (1,495 square feet), Fire Station No.8 (1,350 square feet), Fire Station No.3 (1,495 square feet), and Fire Station No.2 (1,495 square feet) will undergo renovations starting in March. Each is expected to cost $700,000. The city's website shows the oldest of the four fire stations is No.8. It opened in 1997, but the others were opened no earlier than 2004. PHOTOS: A raging 5-alarm fire raced through a row of Bronx businesses early Wednesday morning, leaving at least one person injured. The blaze broke out at Bunny's Deli Cold Cut City at West 231st Street and Broadway in the Kingsbridge section just before 3:30 am, the FDNY said. Two dozen videos uploaded to Citizen App showed huge flames and plumes of thick black smoke shooting into the air, and a crowd of firefighters battling the inferno both from the street level and from tower ladders. Seven businesses in the area have reportedly been gutted by the blaze, or sustained water damage from the firefighting efforts, including a meat store, seafood market, pizzeria, flower shop, cleaning company, barbershop and a tax preparation business. One person suffered a minor injury requiring medical attention. NEW YORK POST VIDEO/PHOTOS: Saturday's tornado left scattered supplies and a destroyed station for the Gibson County Fire Department in Rutherford. Though grateful for no casualties, John Baker, the Battalion Chief for the Gibson County Fire Department, calls the destruction unnerving. Damaged equipment is being gathered for inventory and assessed for usability. Firefighters were even searching across fields for scattered equipment. The focus is on general clean up. Damaged trucks are being looked at by insurance to see what can be fixed. "It appears that we have a 100 percent total loss of the station. Some of the equipment is salvageable," said Baker. "We don't have a home but we still make calls." Baker says he was in the office when the storm hit, causing the most damage to their truck bay. WBBJ-TV ABC/CBS 7 JACKSON PHOTO: Current and former Mount Pleasant Fire Department members, along with car enthusiasts of all ages were partying like its 1941 at the Dec. 9 Charleston Cars & Coffee gathering at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, as they collectively admired and marveled at the sight of an 82 year-old fire engine red service truck. But unlike any precious museum piece, this masterpiece from a bygone era had attendees touching it and climbing inside the ole Ford hand pumper. "We've been asked about putting it in a museum, but when we put it back together this last time, the idea was we wanted it to be out in the public," said retired firefighter Jimmy Lamb. The one-time first responder has teamed up with other current and former fire department personnel, including Jay Michel, in performing regular maintenance on the vehicle. MOULTRIE NEWS - METERED SITE VIDEO: More than 350 families of fallen first responders are taking part in a healing retreat at Walt Disney World Resort. The gathering was part of the Gary Sinise Foundation's annual Snowball Express event, which has been held since 2018 for families of fallen U.S. military heroes. The expansion to a second week focused on first responders and was one of the largest gatherings of the community to date, organizers said. "Our first responders keep us safe and protect us in our homes and we owe them," GSF Senior Vice President Jim Ravella said. "This nation owes them a debt of gratitude." On Tuesday, the families participated in a Walk of Gratitude at the Magic Kingdom theme park. "That is a time when there's a lot of fun. We're here to make new memories for them at this time of year, the holiday season," Ravella said. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO |
