VIDEO: Fort Worth firefighters were battling a large 2-alarm fire at the 1505 Exchange Apartments Tuesday morning. Flames and black smoke were seen shooting from one of the two-story buildings at the community on the 1700 block of Homedale Drive at about 10:30 a.m. At about 10:45 a.m., the department tweeted they'd called for a second alarm to assist in fighting the fire. The community is near the intersection of Ederville Road and Sandy Lane, south of Interstate 30 in East Fort Worth. While Texas Sky Ranger was overhead, several residents were seen standing outside but were not receiving medical treatment. So far, no injuries have been reported. It's not yet clear what caused the fire or how many residents have been impacted by the blaze. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH A man is dead after being found inside a metal building that had caught fire on Monday, according to Randall County Fire officials. According to the Randall County Fire Department, at about 5:54 p.m., RCFD and the Randall County Sheriff's Office responded to a structure fire at 3907 W. Sundown Lane. The caller initially told Randall County dispatch he went to the property to check on it and the elderly man living there alone. The caller arrived to find there had been a fire inside a large metal building but the fire was no longer burning. The caller said he found the elderly man inside the building and believed he was dead. Randall County deputies arrived at the scene and confirmed there was a fire that was no longer burning and the dead man inside the metal building. The Randall County Fire Marshal determined the fire began in the garage area of the metal building. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO The Killeen Fire Department has an academy underway with a class full of cadets and three of them are on full scholarship thanks to a Central Texas family's foundation honoring their fallen firefighter son. The Negrete Firefighter Foundation INC, started by Maria Negrete and her family, is a nonprofit assisting young adults pursue their dreams of becoming firefighters. It's in honor of their loved one, Jose Negrete, who died after battling cancer and a serious infection from it in July 2020 . For the first time ever and with community donations, the foundation paid for three people to attend Killeen Fire Academy, the place where it all started for Jose. Delihlah Jackson, Dylan Bogard and Tyler Williams were hand chosen as the first-ever scholarship recipients. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Progress is being made with the construction of Prosper Fire Rescue's new Central Fire Station. The community is invited to attend a special groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, February 11 at 10 a.m. located at 911 Safety Way. Hear from Mayor Ray Smith, Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, Prosper Fire Rescue Chief Stuart Blasingame and representatives from Pogue Construction and BRW Architects Inc. Mobilization of the construction trailer and dirt work has begun. The site will remain under construction for the next several months and the building is expected to go vertical as early as the end of June or the beginning of July. The building is 30,800 square feet and will include Central Fire Station and Fire Administration which will also house the Fire Marshal's Office. TOWN OF PROSPER San Antonio fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a structure fire just west of downtown late Tuesday night. The fire was called in just before 11 p.m. at a commercial building in the 900 block of West Houston Street, not far from Interstate 10 and West Commerce Street. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames on the second story of the building. Fire officials said firefighters had to ladder up to the second level in order to knock out the flames. The fire was put out quickly and without incident. Fire investigators say they believe the fire started near a sofa and that the building was being used for storage as there are no working utilities inside. Authorities said they think the fire may have started by people trying to stay warm. Both the San Antonio Fire Department and the San Antonio Police Department answered the call. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Crews battled a large house fire that spread to nearby homes Tuesday afternoon in north Abilene. The Abilene Fire Department responded to the three alarm fire in the 1100 block of Victoria Street around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. The home itself was in flames, and a mobile home in the back yard had also ignited. Officials at the scene say the fire spread to another property and involved four total structures. Early reports indicate the fire started in a small travel trailer behind one of the homes, then went into a shop in the property next door, then another structure before igniting the house with the travel trailer. A female who was inside when one of the secondary homes caught fire was evacuated without incident and a male who was inside the backyard mobile home was transported to the the hospital but later found to have no injuries. Police are searching for the person who lit a suitcase on fire and then rolled it onto a subway train with people on board — the second fire in as many days along the same train line. The fire onboard a northbound 1 train Friday was captured on video. A witness said he realized something was wrong when he heard someone yell "smoke" just after the train had pulled into the 18th Street station around 10 a.m. "It looked like someone lit, whether accidentally or on purpose, a piece of rolling luggage on fire, and that had melted into the seats. And that in turn created a bigger fire," said Brendan Cochrane. "All you can do is stand there or call for help. You can't put out the fire because you don't have anything to put out the fire with. That's the thing that's frustrating." WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK With a big winter storm headed our way, and temperatures set to plunge once again, one of Chicago's favorite winter traditions is well underway. The Chicago Fire Department's icebreaking boat made its way down the Chicago River Tuesday afternoon, tearing through thick sheets of ice. It's one of the most spectacular sights Chicago has to offer. But the first thing you notice is the noise. Grinding, crushing and occasionally popping, sheets of ice fracture into little jigsaw puzzle pieces under the massive weight of the Christopher Wheatley. "It's designed as an icebreaker. It can cut up to almost 15 inches of ice going through it," said Jason Lach, Deputy District Chief of the fire department's Marine and Dive unit. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO The Los Angeles and Cincinnati fire departments have made a friendly wager on Super Bowl LVI. LA Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas tweeted a photo of a Matthew Stafford Rams jersey and a Rams hat along with a message saying the losing team's department will raise the winning team's flag at a station and on an engine and the fire chief will wear a jersey along with a congratulations message that gets posted to social media. Cincy Fire & EMS replied with a quote tweet, saying, "We hope you're practicing the @Bengals Who Dey chant and the Ickey Shuffle for your congratulatory message, Chief!" The Bengals and Rams will square off in the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 13. WLWT-TV NBC 5 CINCINNATI PHOTO: Firefighters in Fall River are being recognized for their extraordinary work at a Saturday house fire, while facing brutal weather conditions. In a Facebook post, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan praised the fire crews. "They battled some really tough conditions at a house fire on Irving St. With lot of elements working against them, including the parking, wind, cold and size of the fire, they really did a tremendous job." One image in particular captured the conditions crews faced. The Fall River Reporter posted the image taken by Bobby Forand of Fall River Fire Department. You can see an ice-encrusted firefighter - his helmet, turnout gear, and mustache - frozen solid. Mayor Coogan says firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding homes. One minor injury was reported, according to the mayor. WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON VIDEO: Across Wisconsin, firefighters have been particularly susceptible to dying of COVID-19–even moreso than their law enforcement first responder counterparts. In 2021, all six of Wisconsin's line of duty deaths for firefighters and emergency medical service personnel were a result of COVID-19 complications, according to new data released to News 3 Now. At least eleven have died since the start of the pandemic. "Every firefighter in the world wants to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem," Chris Klahn said, who works for the Montello Fire Department and sits on the board of directors for the Wisconsin State Firefighter Association. "This pandemic has just been a struggle to try to keep ourselves healthy, our families healthy, and still respond to those calls for service." WISC-TV CBS 3 MADISON |
