Caldwell police chief says all guests accounted for following motel fire on Highway 21 VIDEO/PHOTOS: Caldwell's Police Chief says all guests have been accounted for following Tuesday's fire that destroyed the Caldwell Motel on Highway 21. Chief Charles Barnes says 37 people, including some who lived there, were currently listed as guests at the motel. One guest was transported by ambulance from the scene earlier in the afternoon but the condition of that person wasn't immediately available during a news conference Tuesday night. Chief Barnes says when firefighters arrived on the scene around 2:30 p.m., flames were already shooting out of a portion of the building and the strong winds helped moved the fire across the structure at a fast pace. It's still unclear what started the blaze but it was still considered an "active fire" at 9:45 p.m. A shelter has been set up at the Caldwell Civic Center for displaced guests. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN Brownsboro firefighter's home damaged by fire; department seeking donations After responding to a page about a structure fire Tuesday afternoon, first responders with Brownsboro Fire Rescue learned it was the home of one of their own. Around 3:00 p.m., crews were called to the home of firefighter Robert Mitchell, who had just been named the department's ‘Rookie of the Year' at an awards banquet on Saturday. No one was hurt, but the fire caused extensive damage to the home's interior. According to the department, the utility company cannot restore power to the home until repairs are made. There have already been offers of donated sheet rock and lumber, as well as volunteers. The American Red Cross is also expected to provide financial assistance, a Facebook post stated. In the meantime, the fire department is collecting donations of any kind to support the Mitchell family as they rebuild. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Longview City Council approves bond election for firefighter pensions A bond that would provide additional funding for Longview firefighter retirement pensions will go up for a vote in May. The Longview City Council voted on the measure during their Tuesday night meeting. Councilwoman Nona Snoddy and Councilman David Wright were not in attendance. However, all other attending council members were in favor of the bond. The Longview City Council previously said it was exploring several options to ensure there's enough money in the firefighter's pension fund for retirees. The topic was discussed during a January city council meeting, though no action was taken. Longview firefighters are eligible for retirement after 20 years of service, although some stay on longer. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER One man rescued from Mexia house fire, loses home VIDEO: A single-family Mexia home was fully engulfed in flames Monday evening, but thanks to good samaritans a man still has his life, according to the Mexia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. Around 4:48 p.m. Wortham Volunteer fire officials responded to a residential building fire on the 700 block of South Bonham Street in Mexia. The Wortham Volunteer Fire Department immediately responded to the blaze and began putting out the fire alongside Mexia firefighters, according to MFEMSD. A 30-year-old man was saved by his neighbors who were able to get him out of the firey home before police arrived, according to Mexia Fire. The fire at the home started another small grass fire adjacent to the north side of the home and it was quickly extinguished, according to Mexia Fire. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE San Antonio family displaced by house fire A West Side family has been displaced following a house fire late Tuesday night, the San Antonio Fire Department said. The fire was called in around 10:45 p.m. at a home in the 2900 block of Dall Trail, not far from Ingram Road and Callaghan Road. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found heavy flames in a back bedroom window. They were able to put out the fire quickly and without incident. Fire officials said all the residents of the home managed to get out safely and were not hurt. Damage to the home was described as being "moderate". Authorities say the family will now have to stay elsewhere for the time being. Both the San Antonio Police Department and the San Antonio Fire Department answered the call. The cause of the fire is not currently known. A fire investigation team will work to determine the exact cause. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Kennedale grassfire burns 100 acres, damages commercial building VIDEO: People were evacuated from their homes Tuesday near a large brush fire in the Tarrant County city of Kennedale. The fire was in a thick, brushy area off Kennedale Parkway and Little School Road. Video from SKY 4 shows damage to industrial properties in the area. At one point, flames were just feet away from a passing train. Firefighters have contained the fire after it burned 100 acres and one commercial welding building. The four-alarm fire began in the woods at around 1:30 p.m. with 16 different city fire departments responding to the flames. It is unclear what caused the fire to start. But in these conditions, it could be anything from a small train spark to a cigarette butt. The building that caught fire was Riley Machine and Welding, and it has lots of highly flammable materials inside. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Tanker crashes into New York furniture store, sparking massive fire A tanker crashed into the front of a Rockville Centre business, going up in flames and closing Sunrise Highway for the Wednesday morning commute. The driver of the tanker, carrying approximately 9,200 gallons of gasoline, lost control on Sunrise Highway at North Centre Avenue at around 1:10 a.m. The vehicle overturned and crashed into the front of a vacant storefront that until recently housed a La-Z-Boy showroom. The tanker went up in flames, which quickly spread to the business. Burning gas also spread into the local sewer system. "I looked down Sunrise Highway, there was fire coming out seven or eight manhole covers, all the way down, about a quarter mile down Sunrise Highway," said Rockville Centre Fire Department Chief James Avondet. "It was one of the worst things I've seen in my 47-year career." WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Related with Videos: Gas Tanker Crash Sparks Massive Fire In Rockville Centre New $17 million state-of-the-art fire station coming to Florida Along Blue Heron Boulevard and Congress Avenue, construction is officially underway for a new fire station in Riviera Beach. On Tuesday, City leaders broke ground on a $17 million fire house that is expected to be up and running by the end of next year. The new station will be one of the most state-of-the-art fire stations in the county if not the state, Fire Chief John Curd said. "Design elements have been incorporated to reduce firefighters' exposure to carcinogens and reduce the psychological and physiological effects associated with the job," he said. The two-story, 31,000 square-foot, cutting-edge facility will feature new technology and equipment that provides energy efficiency, promotes the health and safety of fire personnel while providing temporary space for the Emergency Operations Center, and a training center. It will also feature the city's first fire tower that will be used for training. WPTV NBC 5 WEST PALM BEACH Indiana firefighters rescue mannequin head from icy Lake Monroe PHOTOS: Several days of ice rescue training for Monroe Fire Protection District firefighters last week proved useful when a call came in about what appeared to be a person's head visible above the ice near the Lake Monroe spillway. Friday afternoon, firefighters from Station 21 were dispatched to the Lake Monroe spillway after receiving a report of a person's head sticking out of the ice. "Upon their arrival, they immediately began rescue operations," according to an account on the fire department's Facebook page. "Firefighters in ice suits went out on the ice to attempt a rescue." While making their way to the "victim," rescuers realized the head had been severed from a clothing store mannequin and "had been tossed out on the ice." The incident happened a few days after a three-day outdoor training on ice rescues. The Former Pleasant Garden Fire Chief passed away Sunday after a long fight with bone and lung cancer. WFMY-TV CBS 2 GREENSBORO Average of new U.S. Coronavirus cases falls below delta peak The seven-day average of new Coronavirus infections in the United States has fallen to a number not seen since the delta surge of last summer began to die down, though cases remain higher than during much of the pandemic. The country had an average of 153,029 cases per day as of Monday, according to tracking by The Washington Post. That's lower than the highest seven-day average during the delta variant surge, the 165,187 recorded on Sept. 1. It is also a sharp decline from the pandemic high of 807,897 reached Jan. 22. Although case counts are lower than in December and January, when the even more contagious omicron variant sent infections soaring, they remain elevated. Deaths, which lag behind cases, also appear to be coming down from the highs of the omicron surge.
