2 adults, 5 kids taken to hospital following home fire in Bryan VIDEO: Seven people including five kids were taken to a hospital Tuesday night after their home caught fire in Bryan, firefighters confirmed. The fire started just after 6 p.m. in the 3800 block of Carter Creek Parkway between Delma Drive and the park. When firefighters arrived thick smoke and flames were pouring out of the home near Tanglewood Park and a woman had to be rescued from inside the home by firefighters. Bryan resident Cameron Norvell lives in the same neighborhood and says the commotion caught his attention from his backyard. "I could hear wood breaking. I could hear things crashing. It seemed like a pretty intense experience over here," Norvell said. "I heard some children yelling, so there was kind of some tension. I didn't know what was going on. I looked over here across the creek and saw kids coming out the front door. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Cancer is leading cause of death for firefighters in Texas VIDEO: When duty calls, it's not just the fire that's harmful for firefighters. According to President of the Fort Worth Firefighters Association, Michael Glynn, "the smoke is actually extremely dangerous for us." The International Association of Fire Fighters dedicated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness month "to deliver targeted education and best practices and resources to reduce the impact of cancer on fire fighters." According to IAFF, occupational cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters, accounting for more than 65 percent of the line-of-duty deaths added to the IAFF Fire Fighter Memorial Wall of Honor each year. Glynn has been a firefighter for 20 years and says the cancer causing agents can often go undetected for weeks, months, or even years. Continued smoke inhalation is what doctors say can cause lung scarring and even chronic lung disease. Dr. Sreerama Shetty, researcher at UT Health Science Center at Tyler says lung scarring in humans is "irreversible". KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Firefighters extinguish fire at Tyler business Firefighters were at the scene of a commercial fire on Tuesday night. The fire is at a business known as Disciple Window Tint located in the 13200 block of Hwy 155 S., south of Tyler. A passerby spotted the fire and called 911 at about 8:30 p.m. Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said the owner had left the business about 20 minutes before the call came in from a passerby who had seen flames. Flint-Gresham, Noonday and Dixie fire departments responded. Smith County ESD was also called to the scene. The fire was extinguished by about 9:30 p.m. and was contained to one of the warehouse units the business was located in. No immediate cause of the fire was given. Brooks said the business is a total loss. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Structure fire in Temple remains under investigation Firefighters with Temple Fire & Rescue and the Troy Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday afternoon were working to fully extinguish the remnants of a structure fire in the 7500 lock of Pegasus Drive. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO North Texas first responders hit hard by omicron variant As North Texas continues to see a big spike in new coronavirus cases from the omicron variant, first responders are also starting to see an impact. Dallas Fire-Rescue is experiencing the most workers out of the office at one time since the pandemic started. "As of now, we have 181 frontline firefighters who are in quarantine right now," said Dallas Firefighters Association President Jim McDade. DFR does daily testing for every shift. Despite the CDC lowering the isolation time from ten to five days, DFR is currently still doing a 10-day quarantine. "I do know that the department is about to change that, and we're going to go to five full days of quarantine and then a negative test to come back to work," McDade said. "And of course, not being symptomatic anymore." KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Burning wall collapses, nearly hits firefighter in Missouri A section of a wall collapsed in Lincoln County just feet away from where firefighters were battling an early morning blaze Tuesday. The Winfield-Foley Fire Department responded to the house fire around 7 a.m. in the 500 block of Highway Y. The fire caused the front stone veneer wall to collapse and nearly strike one of the firefighters. FOX 2's Bommarito Automotive Group SkyFOX helicopter flew over the scene. The video shows Mark Lodes, a battalion chief and volunteer firefighter, walking away as the burning wall came crumbling down. Lodes said he warned other firefighters to evacuate moments before the collapse. "I could hear it crackling and said the wall is coming down," said Lodes. "As we were walking around to the front, I could hear that sound that the wall was going to collapse. It was three to four seconds. I hollered that the wall was coming down." KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Millions of Jeeps and Rams are about to get a lifesaving new safety feature As many as 4 million drivers are about to become safer, thanks to an over-the-air software update Stellantis will send to their vehicles — at no cost — in January. The Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles will receive alerts when they near an emergency vehicle with its flashers lit. The feature, called the Emergency Vehicle Alert System (EVAS), will initially be available in North America, but Stellantis could roll it out across the 14 brands the automaker sells around the world. A record 63 U.S. emergency responders were killed in crashes last year, according to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. "It's all about saving lives," said Mamatha Chamarthi, Stellantis head of software business and product management. The feature was born in a 2020 meeting where Chrysler group employees pitch new ideas. DETROIT FREE PRESS - METERED SITE 13 People, Including 7 Kids, Die in Fire That Tore Through Pennsylvania Rowhome At least 13 people, including children, died as a quick-moving fire tore through a crowded Philadelphia rowhome converted into two apartments owned by the city's public housing authority in the Fairmount neighborhood early Wednesday. "This is without a doubt one of the most tragic days in our city's history, the loss of so many people in such a tragic way," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said with tears in his eyes. The fire began around 6:40 a.m. on the second floor of the rowhome duplex along the 800 block of North 23rd Street, at Ogden Street, in the dense residential neighborhood, Philadelphia police and fire officials said. The house is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, according to city records. At least 13 people, including seven children, died and two others, including a child, were left in critical condition. The number of dead could still rise, officials said. WCAU-TV NBC 10 PHILADELPHIA January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month Occupational cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters, surpassing heart disease. January is "Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month." The International Association of Fire Fighters and the Fire Fighters Cancer Support Network are teaming up to reduce the impact of cancer on firefighters with education and prevention resources for departments across the nation and here in North Carolina. "It starts with education, and so the education that the International Association of Firefighters is providing for us is very important and very valuable," said Asheville Fire Chief Scott Burnette. Asheville firefighters are also focused on preventing, tracking, and detecting cancers impacting firefighters. According to Chief Burnette, the department is working to better track exposures by providing diaries for firefighters, helping them track exposures over their careers. WMYA-TV 40 ANDERSON More than 1 million Americans diagnosed with COVID over the long holiday weekend The U.S. reported a record 1,082,549 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. It's the latest in a series of staggering milestones brought on by the highly transmissible omicron variant, which is sweeping across the U.S. and around the world. The U.S. has broken several of its own COVID-19 records in recent days. Last week, Johns Hopkins reported more than 480,000 new cases in a single day, more than double the number of daily cases reported during the peak of the delta surge. The seven-day average topped 280,000. For reference: The country was averaging about 70,000 cases a day in early November. Monday's rise could be due to delays in reporting over the holidays and probably includes tests conducted over the weekend. The 7-day daily average for infections is currently at 480,273 per day.
