Straight Talk about FirstNet: First Responder-Designed and First Responder-Led
Author: Chris Lombard, Assistant Chief of the Seattle Fire Department
In emergency response communication interoperability, public safety's handling of the 4.9 GHz spectrum resembles the Wild West, with minimal coordination between states, uncoordinated use within given states, and fractured coordination among disciplines. Unfortunately, some entities aim to maintain this dysfunction for personal gain or to the detriment of others, claiming to represent public safety's interests under the guise of helping them retain what's rightfully theirs. Read on to learn more about the FirstNet Authority, within the U.S. Department of Commerce, and its efforts to facilitate coordination amongst public safety representatives.

PHOTOS: A massive 2-alarm fire destroyed a commercial building in a matter of minutes in Downtown San Antonio near the Bexar County Pretrial Services building. The fire started just before 7 a.m. Wednesday at a huge commercial building off Buena Vista Street near South Comal Street. Aerial footage shows the building fully engulfed in flames with the roof and several walls collapsing. Officials said huge building was mostly empty, but one small business, Cool King, was operating in the facility. One worker was inside the building at the time the fire started, but did make it out safely. Crews used several ladder trucks to battle this massive fire that completely engulfed this large building. After about 30 minutes, firefighters were able to get the blaze under control. Several cars that were parked near the building were destroyed as well.

A Bedford firefighter says being at the right place at the right time likely saved his life. On August 17, 2023, firefighter and paramedic Daniel Stewart was in full gear training when he started to feel pressure on his chest. Stewart went to the back of the ambulance and tried to do an EKG, when he realized that he was having a heart attack. He alerted his colleagues and was rushed to the hospital, Texas Health - HEB. "Seeing the look on their faces, I knew I was in trouble for sure and then, knowing in the back of your mind what I do for a living, I knew what the end result was going to be if we didn't do something quickly. It kind of made it a lot worse," said Stewart. "If I'd went into a room by myself and tried to shrug it off they would've found me dead." His fellow firefighters performed life-saving measures and took him to the hospital.

PHOTOS: Highway 6 is back open after a vehicle struck a Marlin Volunteer Fire Department rescue truck which was on scene for traffic control. The department says its truck was on the scene of a motor vehicle crash which occurred on southbound State Highway 6 on Monday. The truck was positioned in a way as to protect the tow operators, as well as the law enforcement officers working the scene of the accident. Department personnel also had traffic cones in place. While workers were cleaning up the accident scene, a silver vehicle disregarded all traffic control devices and equipment. The silver vehicle struck the driver's side of the rescue truck, causing significant damage. According to the department, the driver of the silver vehicle was evaluated by EMS and was not transported.

VIDEO: A fire has destroyed multiple units at an apartment complex in north Harris County. The fire broke out Tuesday night around 11:50 p.m. at an apartment off of Ella Boulevard near Rankin Road. Fire officials said that between 8-12 units were destroyed by the flames. They also determined that the fire "originated in the attic space of the leasing office due to an electrical/mechanical failure." No injuries were reported. Firefighters from multiple agencies were called to help with the fire, which lasted about 90 minutes. The American Red Cross was also on the scene, helping those displaced families.

VIDEO: Three Belleville firefighters were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after their fire truck was involved in a crash and flipped onto its side. It all happened at Route 161 and Carlyle Avenue, right by Belleville East High School. The good news is that nobody was seriously hurt. The bad news is that there is significant damage to both the fire truck and the Toyota 4Runner, which was also involved in the crash. This all took place around 6:00 a.m. The Deputy Chief of the Belleville Fire Department, Curt Lougeay, told FOX 2 that his truck was east on Carlyle with its lights and sirens, heading to a fire at a nearby Burger King. Lougeay says the 4Runner was at the intersection with 161 and Carlyle and somehow the crash happened from there.

VIDEO: There's new information about July's deadly cargo ship fire in Port Newark, as the Coast Guard previewed Wednesday's public hearing. Firefighters 45-year-old Augusto Acabou and 49-year-old Wayne Brooks Jr. were killed when a massive fire overtook an Italian cargo ship in Port Newark on July 5, 2023. Five other firefighters were injured. The Coast Guard on Tuesday previewed a hearing to determine what went wrong. "The purpose of the hearing is to meticulously examine the circumstances surrounding the causes of the fire and the subsequent events that led to the deaths of firefighters Acabou and Brooks so that we can help prevent future incidents and make the shipping and port community safer," said Commander Christian J. Barger, lead investigating officer for the Grande Costa D'Avorio fire.

PHOTOS: On Jan. 10, 1962, all the talk was about bitter cold. At 3 p.m., with the temperature only 4 degrees, Carson Crocker was cutting a customer's hair at 702 Chouteau Avenue. Police officer Kenneth Jones tried to stay warm in his patrol car one block away. Major Nesbit worked inside the Ralston Purina feed mill that towered over the neighborhood just south of downtown. The quiet chill was shattered at 3:20 p.m., when a grain-dust explosion ripped through the Ralston mill, at Seventh and Gratiot streets. The blast blew open Crocker's front door, showered airborne debris around Jones' car and threw Nesbit across the room. "I heard this 'whoom' and there was fire everywhere," Nesbit said. "I crawled until I could see and then I cut out of there."
