Texas A&M Forest Service Department Head retires after 42 years with organization Brad Smith, the Predictive Services Department head and longtime member of the Texas A&M Forest Service, announced that he would be retiring last Friday. "Brad has built an illustrious career as a well-respected voice in the wildland fire community of Texas and across the nation," said Texas A&M Forest Service Fire Chief Wes Moorehead in a press release. "His leadership and innovation have shaped more accurate fire forecasting in Texas and the Great Plains region, providing fire managers with the necessary information for strategic decisions to respond efficiently, which ultimately saves lives, homes and natural resources." Smith has been with the Texas A&M Forest Service since 1981, when he began working as a seasonal forester for the U.S. Forest Service in Marshall following his graduation from Stephen F. Austin University. KAGS-LD NBC 23 BRYAN 2-alarm fire at San Antonio apartment displaces residents, damages 8 units VIDEO/PHOTOS: Several residents are displaced after eight units were damaged by a 2-alarm fire at a Northeast Side apartment complex. The fire happened around 6:30 p.m. at an apartment complex off 10600 Nacogdoches Road. San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) officials said when they arrived, they saw smoke and fire coming from the first floor going into the second floor which spread quickly into the attic. Fire officials prompted the call for a second alarm due to the size of the building. Officials dispatched 30 units to help get the fire under control. Firefighters made an aggressive attack and were able to keep the fire, smoke, and water damage to roughly eight apartments out of 16 in the building, according to SAFD. No injuries were reported and the SAFD is working with apartment management to get the displaced residents shelter. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Texas 121 reopens in Grapevine after a multi-vehicle crash involving a fire truck VIDEO: At least one person was hurt in a chain reaction crash involving eight vehicles including a fire truck in Grapevine Monday morning. The crash took place on the flyover from southbound Texas 121 to westbound Texas 114 just before 11 a.m. Grapevine Police said a fire truck was at the scene responding to a crash when it was struck by another vehicle. At least eight vehicles ended up being involved in crashes on the bridge. One person was injured and has been hospitalized. Their condition is not known. The crash was cleared by noon but Texas 121, immediately north of the north entrance to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport near Grapevine Mills Mall, remained closed for more than an hour with traffic being diverted to Texan Trail. Grapevine Police tweeted that the highway reopened at about 1:20 p.m. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Update: Fort Worth Fire Chief opens up about investigation into hotel explosion that rocked downtown VIDEOS: Seconds after this explosion at the Sandman Hotel in downtown Fort Worth, people inside a hotel elevator called 911 for help. The Fort Worth Fire Department is in charge of getting to the bottom of the cause of the blast. Atmos says it determined during the investigation that its systems did not cause the blast. As the lead investigating agency, Fort Worth Fire Chief Jim Davis told WFAA that he is 100% confident about their investigation based on what they've learned so far. Despite the holiday, Davis says he and his team have been meeting all weekend to determine the next steps they will take. "We are going to be able to at least identify how and where this occurred," Davis said. Davis says he feels a responsibility to the public and is using resources from multiple agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Retired Massachusetts firefighter invents tool to help fight electric vehicle fires VIDEO/PHOTO: Electric vehicles (EV) can be a major risk if they catch on fire. Retired Everett Fire Captain Gerry O'Hearn has a new invention to fight those fires. He calls it the Gerry Pipe. "We got to cool down the battery underneath," O'Hearn told WBZ-TV. "The key is no one gets hurt." The trouble with EV fires is their lithium batteries can burn for as long as 24 hours. The battery is typically located on the bottom of the car and can span the length of the vehicle. Since EV cars tend to be extra low to the ground, the batteries can be hard to reach. O'Hearn said sometimes firefighters try to tip the car on its side with their hands. "In the future, they're hoping to have some type of extinguisher-suppressant on it right, which they can have built right into these automobiles," he said. WBZ-TV CBS 4 BOSTON Remembering the 1994 Northridge Earthquake in California 30 years later VIDEOS/PHOTOS: The Los Angeles Fire Department will mark the 30th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake Wednesday by urging residents to prepare for future temblors and other natural disasters, reminding them of the devastation that resulted from the historic shaker. The magnitude-6.7 Northridge Earthquake struck in the early morning hours of Jan. 17, 1994. After the dust settled, at least 57 people were dead -- some put the death toll at 61 -- and 11,846 people in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties were treated at hospitals. Property losses were pegged at $40 billion. It was the costliest disaster in U.S. history. Insured losses were estimated at $12.5 billion. Aid from the federal government was estimated at $13 billion. In Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, a total of 114,039 residential and commercial structures were damaged. KTTV FOX 11 LOS ANGELES Wisconsin fire department gets new vehicle for ice and water rescues VIDEO: A new, all-terrain vehicle could help save countless lives during ice and water rescues in our area. The Boom Bay Volunteer Fire Department gave our Action 2 News team a first look. The vehicle is called a ‘Sherp,' and it can travel through almost anything to rescue people. Boom Bay Fire Chief Dave Platta said it can tackle nearly everything from lakes to ice to swampy marshes. "It can go over obstacles 3 ½, 4 feet tall. It can go over cars. It can drive almost anywhere without getting stuck," Platta said. The Sherp easily knocked down cattails during our ride-along and that is nothing compared to other obstacles like rocks and fallen trees it can tackle. According to the fire chief, the ATV is a gift from a friend of the fire department who says if it saves one life it's beneficial to the fleet. The Sherp is entirely funded through donations and fundraising. WBAY-TV ABC 2 GREEN BAY NIST Study: Wear and tear may cause firefighter gear to release more 'forever chemicals' Last year, a study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) showed that the textiles used in protective clothing worn by firefighters often contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, a class of chemicals that has been linked to an increased risk of cancer and other health effects. Now, a follow-up study from NIST shows that the textiles used in that protective clothing, called turnout gear, tend to release more PFAS when they are subject to wear and tear. Taken together, the two studies identified the PFAS compounds present in selected turnout gear textiles, how much of each was present, and whether simulated wear and tear increased the amount of PFAS that the textiles released.
