| Massive fire torches apartment complex in San Antonio PHOTOS: A massive fire tore through an apartment complex on the Northeast Side. Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the San Antonio Fire Department responded to calls of a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex at the corner of Park Crossing and Thousand Oaks Drive. The fire allegedly started on the first floor of the building, spreading up to the second via a balcony. Crews evacuated residents from the buildings and fought the fire for 30 minutes until it was under control. Firefighters had to go defensive multiple times, due to several collapses, including chimneys falling. Crews on the scene said that although they have a good idea of what started the fire, they are waiting for investigators to confirm. In total, 12 units were damaged by the fire. The Red Cross has been called in to assist displaced residents. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Stratford EMS receives 2 auto chest compression devices VIDEO: Stratford EMS received two Lifeline Arm Automated Chest Compression devices to enhance the ability to serve during emergencies. The transport time for medical personnel to arrive at the nearest hospital takes at least 30 to 40 minutes. This device will provide consistent and effective compressions to ensure critical care to those who need it most. "These two devices they are more efficient than the human can do and they can go for a longer period of time. Humans get tired and it can get exhausting for us, and it opens up more time for us to do other things that can be productive and efficient for the patient," said Meghan McNeely, Stratford EMS volunteer. Stratford has two ambulances and a chest compression device will be placed in both emergency vehicles. The reality of living far from emergency services struck him on a 4th of July 15 years ago, when a brush fire began at his ranch. Benjamin Leal remembers those terrifying moments. "I guess somebody threw up a firecracker and it came into my ranch," he recalls. "It was inside, thank God it was inside, fell inside a round pin, where I train my horses and we were able to contain it. But you know it was scary because I don't have enough water to turn it off, [and] out here in the middle of nowhere, who do you call?" Around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Payne Springs Fire and Rescue were called in regards to a fire in the Bushwacker subdivision. When firefighters arrived they found a large RV with heavy fire at the front of the vehicle. According to the PSFR, the fire was quickly controlled. | VIDEO: Behind Phoenix Fire Department's new 'firefighter with a sign' safety campaign The Phoenix Fire Department is hoping a new social media campaign will help keep residents and visitors safe around the Valley. You may have already seen their online posts featuring a firefighter with a big handlebar mustache holding up a sign that offers a public safety reminder. They're simple photos, but the messages are hugely important. ABC15 talked with the fire department about their new campaign and why they think it's a good way to reach more people in a way that sticks. KNXV-TV ABC 15 PHOENIX Missouri fire department crew comments on recent mine shaft rescue VIDEO: Emergency responders with the Kansas City Fire Department helped rescue two people from an abandoned mine shaft early Sunday morning. Authorities say they got the victims out in about 30 minutes. "The cave was pitch black," KCFD Fire Captain Chris Vandermillion said. "We were fortunate to have lights, ropes and that helped in finding them." The 30-year-old man and 22-year-old woman told authorities they went inside the cave around 11 p.m. Saturday after the Kenny Chesney concert. The victims became disoriented and were unable to find their way out. Just after 4 a.m., they found a spot with a cell signal to call 911, but they were far from the entrance. KCFD had two rescue teams on foot and one outside the cave on standby. WDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY Firefighters in one Florida county rally for new contract, better starting pay VIDEO: Firefighters in Brevard County say they want a new contract. They and some of their supporters gathered outside the county's government center on Tuesday afternoon to raise awareness for their cause. Currently, the starting salary for firefighters in Brevard County is approximately $15 per hour. The President of the local firefighters union says there's plenty of competition for new recruits. Meanwhile, county officials are making an effort to attract and retain more firefighters. The new contract has been under negotiation since January. The current contract expires on September 30. "It's a calling, and they want to do their job," said Michael Bramsom, President of the Brevard County Professional Firefighters Union IAFF Local 2969. "Are we giving them the services, the knowledge, the equipment to do the job?"
