Black smoke fills north Abilene sky as fire department responds to junkyard fire VIDEO: Huge plumes of smoke filled the sky over parts of North Abilene Tuesday evening as a result of several cars burning at a recycling plant. However, Abilene fire says the smoke just made the situation look worse than it actually was. Just after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, a large fire took over Jay'z Recycle and Towing in North Abilene. The fire prompted the closure of a stretch of Pine Street as crews with the Abilene Fire Department (AFD) ran hoses across the road to bring water to the fire, as the flames quickly engulfed a pile of scrapped vehicles. "When the first crews got here, there were actually several cars in a pile that were burning," Abilene Deputy Fire Chief Joey Kincade told KTAB/KRBC. The burning car frames, oil, and tires sent huge plumes of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles around. Heart disease and other cardiac issues have long been recognized as significant health risks for firefighters. Cardiac-related events have accounted for 43% of the on-duty duty fatalities over the past 10 years, according to a National Fire Protection Association report. In the general population in the U.S., about one in five people die from heart disease. Matt McAllister, a research fellow with the Translational Health Research Center at Texas State University, studies the effect of stress on firefighters and its relation to cardiovascular health. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Bullard Fire Department receives drinking water donation to support wildfire response efforts The Bullard Fire Department received a donation of canned emergency drinking water from Anheuser-Busch, a leading beer company, to help keep its responders hydrated as they battle fires. The water will help firefighters during disasters such as wildfires, easing a major safety concern. On July 10, 2 pallets were dropped off. "Firefighters lose a tremendous amount of fluid during high-intensity response such as battling wildfires. Proper hydration is critical to ensure the safety of our firefighters and keep them performing at their best," says Bullard Fire Chief Peter Riley. "Thanks to this water donation from Anheuser-Busch and the National Volunteer Fire Council, we now have the resources to keep our firefighters hydrated and ready to respond." KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Follow up: Humble plastics facility fire sparks environmental concerns VIDEO: In the aftermath of a large industrial fire at a plastics facility, there are now environmental concerns. Fire officials in Humble estimate tens of thousands of tiny plastic beads were released, with many floating into storm sewer drains. "That's what they use to make the plastic bags," Humble Chief Fire Marshal James Nykaza said. The beads, he said, are used to make plastic grocery bags, one of the primary products made at the facility. Crews began the clean-up on these beads once the air quality was determined to be safe, but it's unknown how many beads traveled into storm drains where they could end up in the San Jacinto River. "It can damage the wildlife. You know the fish eat them, the birds eat them, it can harm them and make them sick- make them pass away," Nykaza said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: Five years later, Phoenix neighborhood still recovering after monsoon sparked Safeway fire Five years ago on Tuesday, a massive fire gutted a grocery store in north Phoenix, covering homes in ash. A monsoon storm caused a roof collapse, rupturing a gas line and sparking that fire at the Safeway store at 35th Avenue and Northern Avenue. Even with a huge response from firefighters, the store could not be saved. A month later, Safeway announced it would not rebuild. Five years later, there's a gym and other new stores at the corner, but a bit of a "food desert" in the area with some neighbors telling us they have to go further for their groceries. "Usually, I will either walk if it's within walking distance, or I'll take the bus. There are other grocery stores around here like Food City, Fry's," Elaine Myers said. Others have adapted too. "Now I shop at Walmart or get stuff delivered to me," Tiffany Brown said. The crash occurred at about 11:25 p.m. in the 300-block of East 79th Street, police said. Police said a vehicle ran a red light and struck the firetruck, causing the fire truck to flip on its side. Five firefighters were transported to hospitals in good condition, police said. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital in good condition. Police said the driver of the car will be issued traffic citations. Further details were not immediately available. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Residents evacuated as homes slide down California hillside following ‘significant land movement' PHOTOS: More than a dozen homes have been evacuated in Rolling Hills Estates, California, after the ground shifted, causing extensive damage, city and Los Angeles County officials said. Twelve homes were red-tagged as of Monday night, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said on Twitter. Sixteen residents had been displaced by that point, the department said. A break in a sewer main triggered by the land movement forced the evacuation of another five homes Tuesday afternoon, bringing the total number of evacuated homes to 17, city officials said. The incident has been unfolding since Saturday, with footage from CNN affiliate KCAL showing homes crumbling on the hillside, the structures buckling as the earth gives way. There's no clear indication when the ground movement might end, though city officials said that the movement had slowed as of Tuesday afternoon.
