Hilburn begins serving as Kirby's new fire chief The third time is a charm for Kirby's William Hilburn. Twice, the Kirby Fire Department firefighter has served as interim fire chief while the city searched for a new department leader. But that changed last month, when city officials informed Hilburn that he'd been selected as the department's next fire chief. Hilburn, 49, has been with the Kirby Fire Department since 2008. He has moved up the ranks from firefighter to captain and then assistant fire chief. When former Chief Carlos Alfaro retired, Hilburn was named interim fire chief while the city searched for a successor. Once Kirby found a new chief, Chief Glenn Levy, Hilburn stepped down to the rank of captain. But then Levy also retired, and the "interim" role returned, and Hilburn stepped in as interim fire chief again. Oregon resort a total loss after fire spreads rapidly through the building VIDEO: On Tuesday morning, firefighters responded to a fire at Galice Resort, the iconic restaurant and store situated along the Rogue River to the northwest of Merlin. Austin Prince from Rural Metro Fire confirmed to NewsWatch 12 that the structure was "fully involved," as firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire. The agency later posted an update, saying that people should avoid the area to prevent congestion as fire crews work on the major fire incident. According to fire officials at the scene, the building is a total loss. Some of the rafts and nearby vehicles were salvaged from the fire, but the building itself and most of its contents were destroyed. Mary Lou Thomason told NewsWatch 12 that her daughter, and now owner of Galice Resort Debbie Thomason, was working at the Resort when the fire began, although she did not see what caused it. This year, Fire Prevention Week is recognized from October 3 through 9 and seeks to better educate the public about the sounds of smoke alarms, what they mean, and how to respond to them. According to an NFPA report, working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half. The same report, entitled "Smoke Alarms in the U.S.," stated 41% of household fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarm or 16% in homes with alarms that failed to activate. "Smoke alarms have played a leading role in reducing fire death rates over the past 40 years, but we still have more work to do in maximizing their effectiveness," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. If it wasn't for Will Wooten's hard work, leaders of the Heartsease Volunteer Fire Department said they wouldn't be able to fight fires safely. "I was not expecting this at all," Wooten said. "It's just a really great thing." This spring, a service project was all that stood between Wooten and the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest level in the Boy Scouts of America organization. The project would need to make an impact in Wooten's community, and his father came to him with an idea. "We were kind of thinking about ideas on what to do for the project, and he said Heartsease is really struggling right now," Wooten said. A firefighter was also taken for treatment and is on the mend. The Firefighters Association said they had to wait over seven minutes to get an ambulance for a firefighter suffering from a rapid pulse and heat exhaustion, the delay they say is unacceptable. The City of Rochester said Tuesday, the firefighter was treated on-scene and the transport wasn't an issue, ambulances were there. "They realized that he needed to go to the hospital and we didn't have an ambulance," says Eddie Santiago, President of the Rochester Firefighter's Association. He says this is not about the EMTs, he says they do a phenomenal job. Now that it's up for sale, the Calera Fire Department is doing everything it can to buy it and bring it home. The clock is ticking as a bright red badge of brotherhood between Oklahoma and New York firefighters – with a history spanning 26 years - could be lost in just 10 days. In 1995, ten New York firefighters came to the rescue following the Oklahoma City Bombing. Those same ten men lost their lives in the September 11th attacks. Seeing the aftermath, a Fort Gibson school saw a need - and filled it. Students raised nearly half a million dollars and bought a new fire truck. Dubbed the 'Spirit of Oklahoma,' it was sent to spend the rest of its days in New York City but recently it was sold at an auction. KOTV-DT CBS 6 TULSA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
