House fire driven by high winds displaces Van Alstyne family PHOTOS: A family was displaced after a fire driven by high winds damaged their Van Alstyne home early Wednesday morning. Firefighters said they were called to the home on Hynds Ranch Road just after 12:30 a.m. The family who lives in the home was inside at the time of the fire, but firefighters said they did make it out safely. Firefighters said because of the high winds, several small grassfires started which required additional trucks and personnel. Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it spread to the two-story portion of the home. The Grayson County fire marshal is on scene Wednesday investigating the cause of the fire. KXII-TV CBS 12 SHERMAN Laredo Fire Department tanker truck rolls into Rio Grande during brush fire A Laredo Fire Department tanker truck rolled into the Rio Grande as firefighters were fighting a brush fire near El Azteca neighborhood, according to first responders. The incident was reported at about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday on Zaragoza Street. While taking measures to prevent a brush fire from spreading along the riverbanks, a fire department tanker truck designed to fight brush fires had a mechanical malfunction, causing the tanker to engage its transmission, authorities said. "Due to its proximity to the riverbanks, the tanker ended up rolling into the river. Despite this unforeseen accident, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. Personnel were not inside the unit. No injuries occurred," the fire department said in a statement. LAREDO MORNING TIMES - METERED SITE Arlington Fire Department Awarded for Heroism During California Wildfires The Arlington Fire Department is receiving honors in Austin on Wednesday. The Texas House of Representatives will commend the department's strike team for its heroism after firefighters spent three weeks battling the California wildfires last year. According to the Texas House of Representatives, members of the TIFMAS strike team "demonstrated exceptional commitment and bravery" during the months of September and October 2020. The Arlington unit was formed in 2011 as part of the Texas Interstate Fire Mutual Aid System, a state-funded regional deployment initiative established to fight large-scale wildfires. Arlington Fire Department was represented by strike team leaders Chris Balough and Jeff Durand, engine bosses Shawn Corder and Brandon Reynolds, and firefighters Joseph Markham, Danny Martin, David Oliver, and Ryan King. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Follow Up: Hundreds of firefighters take part in Texas A&M Engineering Service Spring Fire School in College Station VIDEO: Firefighters from all over the country are in College Station to get the training they need to save lives. The Texas A&M Engineering Service (TTEX) Emergency Services Training Institute (ESTI) is hosting the 33rd annual Spring Fire School this week. This is the first time TEEX is hosting a training this size since March 2020. The school cancelled the rest of 2020's Fire Schools because of safety concerns due to the pandemic last May. "It was a big and busy week for us, but after that point in time we shuttered our operations for a number of months," said Gordon Lohmeyer, the division director for TEEX-ESTI. About 250 men and women have enrolled in school at the Brayton Fire Training Field, all with the same goal; develop and strengthen their skills to save lives. Even as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on, emergency events still happen. KAGS-TV NBC 23 BRYAN Travis County issues burn ban effective immediately for unincorporated areas Travis County issued a burn ban for unincorporated areas effective immediately due to dry conditions following last month's winter storm — causing an increased risk of potential fire. The ban will expire on Wednesday, April 7, unless the public is otherwise notified. "The historic winter storm we experienced last month led to a significant amount of vegetation dying or being freeze-burned. The dry vegetation, combined with high winds and low humidity levels, can be a recipe for disaster," said Travis County Chief Fire Marshal Tony Callaway. "With gusty winds in the forecast in coming days, small fires can easily spread. Therefore, it's necessary to issue a new burn ban." Travis County says the outdoor burn ban does not affect prescribed burns conducted under the supervision of a prescription burn manager. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Governor prepositions state firefighting resources in response to fire weather conditions Governor Greg Abbott [on Tuesday] announced that the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), Texas A&M Forest Service, and the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) have prepositioned resources in response to an elevated to critical risk of wildfires in the Panhandle, Western Plains, Trans Pecos, and the South Texas Plains. These areas of Texas are experiencing significantly warm, dry, and windy conditions that are expected to remain through Thursday and pose serious risk of wildfires that could grow beyond containment. The majority of wildfires in Texas are caused by humans, and TDEM and the Texas A&M Forest Service urge Texans to be mindful of any outdoor activity that may cause a spark. Texans should pay attention to county burn bans and avoid all outdoor burning until conditions improve. KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Related YouTube Video: Fatal Bronx 3-Alarm Fire Village board in Illinois reverses decision to close fire station following rally, community dissent It seems the adage is true: It takes a village. In this case, an outspoken one. Following a recent decision from village officials to close the fire station at 831 E Lake Ave. and reallocate its resources to the other stations, a group of Glenview residents spoke out. In response, the village decided to reverse its plan, keep all five stations open and revisit the data to explore other options. Residents, first responders and other stakeholders said they should have been more involved in the process and expressed concern that closing a station on the east side would lead to longer response times. A rally held outside the station Saturday brought out a few hundred attendees. "When I saw the village of Glenview completely ignoring their taxpayers, their residents, their firefighters, I was mad, and I felt like I had to do something," said Glenbrook High School sophomore Drew Duffy, who organized the rally. "This is us taking a stand." CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Firefighters, Faith Leaders Team Up to Vaccinate Vulnerable in Florida VIDEO: At the end of a recent Sunday evening Spanish-language Mass, the Rev. Roberto Cid made an announcement that perked up many gray-haired heads. "If you are over 65 and a Florida resident and want a COVID vaccine, call the parish office and we can help you," the Roman Catholic priest said, as happy nodding spread through the pews of historic St. Patrick church. In much of the country, getting the coveted vaccine has been tremendously difficult for many older adults due to complicated and overtaxed websites and bureaucracies — and even more so for those who have disabilities, are homebound or have no family to help. But in Miami Beach, faith leaders and the fire department have joined resources to expedite getting shots in the arms of older adults starting with the homebound and those in low-income housing, winning plaudits from both the newly vaccinated and their relieved relatives. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI 8-year-old raises $1,000-plus for Wisconsin fire department A lot of 8-year-olds create reams of artwork, which then goes on to hang on the refrigerator until it gets stale and ceases to be seen as art. Johnson Creek resident Bentley Schacht's art, on the contrary, is hanging on people's walls. His bold colors and designs stand out, as does his commitment to raise money for the Jefferson Fire Department. For the past few months, Bentley has been doing a brisk business selling both spin art and pour art, on ready-to-hang canvas, so far raising $1,000 for the local volunteer fire department. Bentley, a third-grader at East Elementary School in Jefferson, started doing the innovative art with his dad, Brent Schacht, who teaches at East. When Bentley had more artworks then the family personally could store, the 8-year-old decided to use this art to help people.
