Fire crews pull woman out of burning San Antonio house; victim dies from injuries VIDEO: A woman has passed away after she was rescued from her burning home on the city's east side, the San Antonio Fire Department said. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of Runnels Avenue. When fire crews arrived, they found a single-story home in flames. Family members were reportedly in front of the home, telling authorities that someone was still inside. Firefighters pushed through the flames and found the woman inside. They were able to pull her out and transport her to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. SAFD later confirmed the woman passed away. Authorities were able to extinguish the flames, but the home is completely destroyed. The fire did spread to the house next door, filling the house with smoke. The cause of the fire was not reported. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO East Texas fire danger outlook affected by piles of storm debris Many East Texans continue to clean up debris from last month's winter storm, but dead limbs and trees can poise a fire risk. Billy Whitworth, the Assistant Chief Regional Fire Coordinator at the Texas A&M Forest Service said most of the pine trees and live oaks in East Texas are showing some freeze damage. "Most are not dead," Whitworth said. "They're going to leaf back out and some are already starting to do that." He said between now and next several weeks when they do leaf out, the moisture in the leaves and needles are low. "It does make them more combustible," Whitworth said. "We are having a lot of landowners burn those tops and limbs that fell due to the ice breakage that occurred." Whitworth said from February 21 through March 21 of this year, the Texas A&M Forest Service responded to 60 wildfires in East Texas that consumed 1,124-hundred acres. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Windcrest puts hiring of fire marshal on hold Windcrest moved one step closer to hiring a fire marshal after hearing about the benefits of having the new position on the payroll. Council tabled a motion at its March 1 meeting to create the in-house fire marshal post, pending a cost analysis based on the number of responses per month. Windcrest Fire Chief Daniel Kramer said the city's current fire marshal contract with Hollywood Park Fire Lt. Timothy Zelenak is based on individual responses at $70 per call rather than a salary. "The cost to the city is $70 per fire marshal activity, with the city averaging about 90 activities a month," Kramer said. "We spend between $75,000 and $80,000 a year for a contract fire marshal as it stands now."Creating this position "would bring in a salaried, fulltime fire marshal that is not shared among three to four other municipalities," the chief added. MYSANANTONIO.COM Fire Destroys Second Fort Worth Church, Cause Under Investigation Investigators with the Fort Worth Fire Department are investigating a second church fire this week. Firefighters were called to the Newborn Pentecostal Apostolic Faith Church in the 5100 block of Calumet Street around 9 p.m. Monday night. The church was vacant at the time, so no one was injured. Firefighters did call for backup assistance when they arrived at the scene due to the size of the building. Crews were able to quickly get the fire under control and prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes. The church is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. This is the second church to catch fire in Fort Worth this week. The first fire happened at the El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church in the 3400 block of Strong Avenue just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department loses life-saving equipment in burglary A burglary of the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department's station on F.M. 467 has people in Guadalupe County scratching their heads. Among the expensive items taken in the burglary was lifesaving equipment, including "jaws of life" tools used to extricate people trapped in motor vehicles. Only first responders are expected to have use for such equipment, which generally is available only through companies that specialize in providing it. The burglars broke in through a door in the rear of the station, where they were able to achieve access to the equipment in the building and to the vehicles parked inside. "It appears they pulled up a truck next to the station," fire Chief Kurt Strey told the Wilson County News. "There they were able to load up the stuff and leave without being seen." Woman Rescued From 4-Alarm Commercial Fire in Oklahoma Moments Before Flames Engulfed Building VIDEO: A woman was rescued from a four-alarm commercial fire just moments before flames engulfed the building in downtown Oklahoma City, fire officials said. Crews were called out to check smoke at the structure just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening in the 800 block of NW 4th St. Responding crews reported seeing visible flames and heavy smoke at the vacant structure. We're told a local theater company uses the building for storage. Firefighters had to remove bars from a window in order to rescue a woman inside, Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson with the Oklahoma City Fire Department said. The victim was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition to be evaluated. Fulkerson said more than 75 firefighters were on the scene working to extinguish the flames. Investigators have not yet determined a cause for the fire. KWTV-DT CBS 9 OKLAHOMA CITY Body of New York Firefighter Found Under Scorched Nursing Home Nearly 24 hours after a firefighter went missing in a suburban New York assisted living home fire, his body has been found. Rockland County volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd was the second casualty in the blaze that gutted the Evergreen Court Home for Adults in Spring Valley early Tuesday, according to Rabbi Yisroel Kahan of the county's Human Rights Commission. Lloyd was escorted to the Medical Examiner early Wednesday morning, Kahan said. Officials say Lloyd was one of the first firefighters to arrive at the scene. He was on the third floor trying to put out the flames when he became disoriented and eventually trapped there. His body was found just before midnight Wednesday after a search crew with a rescue dog were unable to locate him Tuesday afternoon. Hope for his survival had already faded as the crew was seen backing off so firefighters could continue to hose down the smoldering wreckage. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Married Ohio fire lieutenants retire together VIDEO: Lieutenants Joe and Jennifer Linnenkugel completed their final shift at the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department on Tuesday. Both have been members of the department for years and knew each other well before joining. Jennifer had been a stay-at-home mom before her husband transferred to Toledo. Upon going through the training, she realized there were a number of women in his fire class. "I didn't think that women should be firefighters, so when he decided to get on Toledo so we could come back - my family lived here - he had three women that were in his fire class," Jennifer said. For some reason, that did not sit well with Jennifer. "Obviously, I could tell she was thinking about it before, because when I would come home from the academy she was always asking questions about it," Joe said. WTOL-TV CBS 11 TOLEDO App helps Minnesota first responders approach people in crisis VIDEO: For those with mental or physical disabilities, moments of crisis and high-stress situations can causes panic or unpredictable responses. That's why Mankato Public Safety is using an app that can help them approach those with special needs. The Vitals App provides first responders with medical data and other critical information when they come into contact with a vulnerable person. When a person wearing a Vitals Bluetooth Beacon comes within 80 feet of a first responder, it notifies that responder's smartphone device on their unique needs and the best way to interact with them. "We will get an alert and we won't get an alert until we get within that distance. And that alert will provide information to the responder in real-time. Information provided by the person themselves, a parent, or a caregiver that may have information such as emergency contacts, ways to calm, ways to de-escalate," said Officer DuRose. KEYC-TV CBS/FOX 12 MANCATO Lexington City Council donating fire truck North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation VIDEO: The Lexington Fire Department is saying goodbye to a reliable and trustworthy member of the team. For more than 60 years, firefighters knew their ladder truck would get them to the fire. Thousands of miles later, it's time to retire the truck. Lexington Fire Chief Paul Jarrett is going over the retiring ladder truck for the last time. "It has a long, long history," Jarrett said. "Everybody that I can think of has some sort of connection to that fire truck." Built in 1958 and refurbished in 1997, many Lexington firefighters rode on the back or in the cab of the aerial ladder truck. With such an impressive service record, Jarrett can't imagine seeing this work horse sit in one spot. "We would use it anytime we needed extra help if we had a large call. It was always in operation," Jarrett said. The 62-year-old ladder truck is waiting for its fate at the city garage parking lot. In this case, the final resting place brings plenty of smiles.
