VIDEO: 3-alarm church fire briefly closed runways at Love Field Airport in Dallas PHOTOS: A three-alarm church fire near Love Field Airport temporarily closed runways Tuesday afternoon. Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were called to a fire at Iglesia Adventista Church on Denton Ave. around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday. Crews began fighting the fire from inside, but "the situation quickly escalated and fire began to come through the roof." A third alarm was called and roughly 60-70 firefighters worked to surround and drown the fire with hand lines, master streams and two aerial ladders. Dallas Fire-Rescue says the fire spread to a second building. No injuries have been reported and the fire is under investigation. The City of Dallas said aircraft were being redirected due to smoke. By 3 p.m., all runways were cleared for use and operations at Love Field are normal. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Garland firefighters praised for quick actions, new life-saving device in rescue of 5-month-old VIDEO: A Garland mother is praising the quick actions of Garland firefighters, who used a special device to save her choking baby's life. Now the device is even saving lives across the state. "I turned my back really quick and then turned back and she was choking," mother Marytza Mendes said. She says it only took a matter of seconds for her five-month-old baby, Camilla, choking on her own saliva. "It was so scary. I could do nothing for my daughter at the moment. It hurt my heart and broke me," Mendes adds. Her family called 911, and veteran Garland firefighters, Kelsey Kasper and Melody Gunnoe rushed to her home in their ambulance. "Whenever we showed up, she was blue she wasn't breathing well," says Gunnoe. Gunnoe explains she and Kasper only had minutes to save the baby's life. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Robstown Fire Department in need of more volunteers with summer coming A fire incident last week has further emphasized the continued need for volunteers at the Robstown Fire Department, especially as the summertime approaches. Last week, a vacant home along West Avenue B caught fire within minutes. Worrying neighbors right next door, residents near the home raised their concerns on the summer being right around the corner, potentially leading to more house fires. "I saw the fire on it, it was right behind our house, there were flames and ashes flying everywhere," Robstown resident Baldemar Silva said. Silva said he was at his home, just two houses down when the fire happened. It's kind of scary, at that time you have to keep an eye, and the winds were blowing towards my house, at that time I need to keep on everything," Silva said. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Oklahoma State University holds robot, drone demonstration showcasing first responder assistance VIDEO: In Tulsa, Oklahoma State University held a demonstration to show how they're working to get more drones and robots in the hands of first responders. In the scenario, a drone flew donated blood from a local hospital to a simulated crash scene. A robotic dog from the University of Tulsa picked up the donation and delivered it to a Tulsa Firefighter to give to a patient in the simulated crash scene. A PHD student at the University of Tulsa, Jacob Hart, said the university has three of these robotic dogs and explained some of the ways the dogs can be used. "Ultimately robots are really great at what's dirty, dull and dangerous. These are the things we don't want to do day in and day out or necessarily do ourselves. Having a robot that can step in and do it for us is super nice," Hart said. KOKI-TV FOX 23 TULSA San Francisco firefighters rally against chemicals used in uniforms VIDEO: San Francisco could be the first city in the nation to ban a common type of firefighter uniform found to emit cancer-causing chemicals. Firefighters on Tuesday joined city leaders on the steps of city hall to voice their support for new legislation introduced in the afternoon requiring San Francisco provide new uniforms to its roughly 800 firefighters over the next two years. "Each one of us knows members, has grown up with members, has had to help members who have had this horrible disease just kill their bodies," said Floyd Rollins, San Francisco firefighters union president. "Since 2006, we are looking at over 300 San Francisco firefighters that have lost their lives." Nationwide, companies are still in the testing phase of developing uniforms that do not contain the cancer-causing chemical. KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE ‘Black box' data recorder recovered from ship that struck Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland as recovery efforts continue The US Coast Guard has suspended search and rescue efforts for six people who were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday following a major cargo boat collision. Recovery efforts are now underway for the missing people, who are presumed dead. A team from with the National Transportation Safety Board went aboard the ship late Tuesday night to gather evidence for their investigation, agency Chair Jennifer Homendy told CNN on Wednesday. Officials obtained the ship's data recorder, or black box, which Homendy said will help investigators develop a timeline of events leading up to the crash. The agency will also interview members of the ship's crew, she said. Sources familiar with the probe say it will look into whether contaminated fuel played a role in what happened, the Wall Street Journal reported.
