| Three Corpus Christi firefighters transported to the hospital after Yorktown house fire Fire crews were called out to a two story house fire off of Cannes Street and Yorktown earlier this evening. Three firefighters have been transported to the hospital after they suffered a flash from the fire. That's when a mayday was called by the crews inside. "Those firefighters were removed from the structure either on their own or with help," Battalion Chief Scott Marsh said. "They are all doing well. They were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, but they are all doing well at this time." The fire department says the flames began in the attic and the second story was destroyed. No word tonight on what caused that blaze. KIII-TV3 SOUTH TEXAS Tomball dispatcher, firefighters save man from burning home Tomball firefighters were able to pull a man out of a window Monday night as his garage apartment was engulfed in flames, saving his life, a Tomball Fire Department news release stated. Officers received a 911 call about the fire at 9:53 p.m. Monday in the 15000 block of Cypress Gardens Drive, the release detailed, and Tomball, Magnolia and Rosehill Fire Department units were sent to the scene while the caller stayed on the line with the dispatcher. The victim told dispatch he was trapped inside the apartment with the only way out engulfed in flames, the release stated, before the dispatcher talked the man to a window on the second floor. The first unit to arrive on scene was able to get the man out from the window by using a ladder. HOUSTON CHRONICLE Fire Schools canceled at TEEX this summer due to COVID-19 Annual fire schools in College Station are canceled this year due to COVID-19. The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service made the decision to cancel the municipal and industrial fire schools at the Brayton Fire Field. The Spanish Fire School had already been canceled. The trainings were to have happened in July. The event would normally bring thousands of firefighters from around the world to our area in the summer. Staff at TEEX tells KBTX it was a difficult decision. "After careful consideration, the decision has been made to also cancel the 2020 Annual Industrial and Municipal Schools. KBTX-TV CHANNEL 3 BRYAN Everyone safe after San Angelo first responders rush to house fire, home left scorched First responders rushed to a San Angelo home Tuesday afternoon after calls of visible flames and smells of smoke were reported, according to police scanner traffic. Just before 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, scanner traffic reported a call of smoke around East 19th and North Oakes streets. Another report followed from the homeowner in the 1900 block of North Oakes Street. The homeowner told dispatch she was outside, but her dogs were still inside. An officer on the scanner said, "make sure she stays outside." "We didn't have any injuries and everybody got out," said Stacy Wright, SAFD battalion chief. "The dogs did get out as well." Four police units, three fire trucks and about 15 firefighters responded to the fire, putting it out by 3:28 p.m. GO SAN ANGELO/SAN ANGELO STANDARD TIMES Family recalls moments deputy, trooper rescued them from burning home in Pearland Heroes are made in defining moments and Tuesday was one of them. "Grateful doesn't even begin to describe it," said Lisa Heintz. Overnight, her house caught fire. She and her son charged out the back door, but she did not see her husband, who was already in the front yard, so she went back inside to get him. "I was really afraid, so I ran back in the house and by the time I ran back everything was filled with smoke and I could not run back out," said Heintz. A thick screen covered a window and the hallways burst into flames and she was trapped. However, a DPS trooper and a Brazoria County Deputy quickly arrived at the scene. | Families of first responders who die of coronavirus could have trouble getting federal benefits Right now, the families of first responders who die of the coronavirus must first prove that they were infected on the job before they can collect federal death benefits. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators say that's unfair, and they've introduced legislation to automatically declare that first responders who die of COVID-19 gave their lives in the line of duty. The measure was introduced Tuesday by U.S. Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. "It's the least we can do for the people who put their lives on the line to protect us," Booker said on a conference call with U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. It guarantees federal benefits to families of first responders — police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians — who die due to the virus without first having to prove that the first responder was infected while on the job. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing at Villanova University has launched the national COVID-19 Caring About Health for All Study (CHAMPS) of health care, first responder and service workers for the health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Managing the health care needs of COVID-19 patients has had a tremendous impact not only on the lives of those delivering health care directly but on those who support that effort, from ambulance drivers to maintenance and housekeeping staff whose service has been essential to maintain the health care enterprise.
