VIDEO: Austin police officers rescue man from truck completely engulfed in flames A man was taken to a local hospital Monday afternoon after he was reportedly trapped inside a vehicle that burst into flames in the parking lot of The Enclave apartments in south Austin. Two Austin police officers — Chandler Carrera and Eddie Pineda — sprung into action in an attempt to save the man's life, arriving at the scene just before fire crews, according to an Austin Fire Department spokesperson. On Tuesday, AFD provided more info on the rescue efforts provided by firefighters and Austin police. An AFD spokesperson says the driver of the truck suffered a medical emergency at the same time that he was backing into a parking spot. The truck was in park, but his foot was still on the accelerator, causing the tires to spin in place and spark the fire. The man was unable to move his foot off the gas pedal. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Legington named new Richmond fire marshal After an extensive search, the city of Richmond has named Christopher Legington as its new fire marshal. Legington is a familiar face to Richmond. He began his career with the Richmond Fire Department, serving the department for six and a half years. He then went on to work for the city of Rosenberg, Fort Bend County, and most recently with the city of Stafford's Fire Marshal's Office as an inspector-investigator. Legington's father and uncle served as firefighters, giving him an appreciation for the service at a young age. As a Richmond firefighter, the experience propelled him to the science of fires and the fire's aftermath, leading to his journey to becoming fire marshal. Legington was formally introduced at this week's City Commission meeting and will now lead the fire marshal's office to oversee fire and arson investigations, inspections, and public safety campaigns. FORT BEND HERALD Follow Up: New details in Austin blaze that potentially exposed over 100 firefighters to asbestos Firefighters raced to the scene of a north Austin city-owned warehouse fire on the afternoon of May 6, arriving within five minutes of the first call. But it wasn't until a third alarm unit arrived a little over an hour later that crews were told the smoke swirling around the warehouse could be laced with asbestos, according to internal city documents obtained by KXAN that reveal new details of the incident that potentially exposed 115 firefighters and civilians to the cancer-causing building material. After battling the fire at the corner of Blackson Avenue and the North Interstate 35 service road, those 115 city employees were sent to get chest X-rays as a precautionary measure in case they later develop health problems, according to an AFD spokesperson. In May, the city's payroll had just over 600 firefighters. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Driver charged after hitting fire truck, Lubbock Fire Rescue says Early Tuesday morning, first responders were sent out to Interstate 27 and North Loop 289 after a car stalled in high water. Firefighters were the first to arrive on scene. They had blocked the highway to prevent other cars from getting stuck when a suspected drunk driver hit the back of their fire truck. The Lubbock Fire Rescue Captain Phillip Grandon, said this accident could have been avoided. "Please move over, slow down, don't drive," he said. "We can't say it enough — move over, slow down and this incident was someone driving while impaired." Luckily, the firefighters weren't hurt and no injuries were reported. But this is a reminder why people need to be careful, especially during severe weather conditions. "Don't drive drunk," said Grandon. "But it just shows you that even though we have a big red truck out there with flashing lights people still hit them." KAMC-TV ABC 28 LUBBOCK Woman Accused of Starting Two Fires in Denton A woman is facing multiple charges after being accused of starting two fires in Denton County in the last week. The Denton Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office said Tuesday they charged 45-yr-old Jennifer Spillane with arson in two unrelated fires at a motel and drugstore. The first fire was at the Holiday Lodge motel along the 1000 block of E. University Drive. Fire officials said someone started a fire at the motel on Thursday, May 20 causing an estimated $250,000 in damage. The second fire occurred four days later behind the Drug Emporium on the 700 block of W. University Drive. Fire officials said someone set fire to a bail of cardboard which then damaged the building's exterior. Fire officials said interviews and evidence led them to develop Spillane as a suspect in the fires, though they didn't release any other specific information about the investigation or what led them to her as a suspect. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Wichita Falls Citizen's Academy was red hot this week VIDEO: The Wichita Falls Citizen's Academy was red hot Tuesday night as those participating took a deeper dive into the Wichita Falls Fire Department. The 25 attending students might as well call themselves unofficial Wichita Falls Firefighters after being put through four different stations that taught them what it really takes to hang with those that fight fires everyday. "I did the wall climb or the drop off, whatever it is it was, a little nerve racking but I conquered it," said Torrance Harris, student of Wichita Falls Citizen's Academy. Climbing off the roof of a four story building was just one of many challenging experiences students were able to participate in, if they were brave enough. "They're going to have an opportunity to feel what it feels like to drag a hose, spray water, put on some gear, feel the weight of an air pack, and ride in a ladder truck bucket," said Ken Prillaman, Fire Chief of the Wichita Falls Fire Department. 1 confirmed dead after firefighting helicopter crashes during training exercise in Florida, officials say VIDEO: A firefighting helicopter crashed into a marsh near Leesburg Airport in during a training exercise around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Leesburg Police Department said the four people on board were from a company called Firehawk Helicopters, a fire suppression company. One person has been confirmed dead. At this time, no other survivors have been found. The FAA and NTSB are investigating. A spokesperson with the Leesburg Police department said witnesses saw the helicopter go into a tailspin and at some point the tail broke off from the main body. The helicopter then went into the woods, where a fire started. Most of the fire from the crash was under control as of 9 p.m. Tuesday. US forestry officials were on the scene, plowing a line around the scene to prevent any vegetation fires. FFA has been notified of the crash and will start their investigation Wednesday, officials said. WESH-TV NBC 2 ORLANDO First responders prevented injuries after Kansas tornado sirens failed, official says VIDEO: The first responders who warned Selden residents after sirens failed during Monday's tornado saved lives, an official said Tuesday. A power outage caused the city's sirens to fail just moments before the tornado hit town. Sheridan County Fire Department Capt. Micah Goscha and two other volunteer firefighters acted as the backup warning, driving around town in two fire trucks and using the PA system and sirens to tell people to take shelter. Sheridan County officials reported the tornado hit around 6:30 p.m. Monday, tearing off roofs, crumbling the stone and brick walls of downtown buildings, uprooting trees and crushing at least one farm silo. It damaged most of the buildings in the town of 200-plus people in northwest Kansas. The only reported injury was minor, and involved a volunteer firefighter who was out warning people to take cover. Goscha was in a fire truck near downtown when something hit the vehicle. It broke the back window and a side window, causing minor injuries. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN North Dakota leads the way for more extensive drone use As the employment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increases, a recent report has named North Dakota as the state most prepared for commercial drone use. North Dakota has dedicated time and money to researching, designing, and providing the necessary tools for widespread drone use. UAVs can be deployed very effectively for a broad range of applications, including aerial imaging, emergency rescue, and delivery of goods, but, in some cases, legal issues have slowed their adoption. North Dakota's state laws for drone users, together with its pioneering UAV network, mean that it is ready for widespread commercial drone use in the near future. Its residents have already benefited from a pilot scheme for delivery of essential items, and, with drone technology to survey specific sites, a range of essential industries and emergency services are being served.
