Wichita Falls receives federal grant for first responder training Training, equipment, and exercises are all things that the Department of Homeland Security can help pay for through grants and Wichita Falls has just gotten one. In total, the city now has $50,000 of grant money to train first responders to handle the behind the scenes work that comes with dealing with emergencies and disasters. "We can't send three dozen people to be gone from their region you know for long extended periods of time," John Henderson, Emergency Management Coordinator for Wichita Falls said. He's brought that training to Wichita Falls. This means they won't have to spend the money to send just two or three first responders across the state to it. That grant money will pay for five different classes, all dealing with incident management, a role first responders take during emergencies. KXTN-FM 107.5 Houston firefighters save Lyft driver who was robbed Police say Houston firefighters came to the rescue of a woman who was robbed, and even chased down the robbery suspect and held him until police arrived. It was around 4 a.m. on Sunday. A Lyft driver, who we're identifying as Sherry, stopped her car after having a problem with the Lyft app. Next thing she knew, she saw 23-year-old Antwaun Hurd fall out of another Lyft car that was moving. She was stunned by what happened and continued to follow the other Lyft car to see what was happening. Hurd continued to run down the road. She said he was crying. What she didn't realize is that Hurd had just allegedly robbed a passenger inside of the car before he fell out. Then he ran up to Sherry's car. She stopped her car. She said Hurd claimed he was the victim of a robbery, but in reality, he was actually a robber. She said he pleaded for help. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON College Station firefighters make visual presentation on home fire safety VIDEO: College Station firefighters conducted a free fire safety demonstration Tuesday night to show the community just how easy it is for a fire to start in a home. It was part of an event called, "BURN: Fire, Food, and Fun," hosted by the College Station Fire Department, Park West Life, and the Bryan/College Station Apartment Association. Local residents gathered in a Texas A&M parking lot in 35-degree temperatures as firefighters lit a simulation dorm room to show how something as simple as a candle could take your home from liveable to uninhabitable in just three minutes. Firefighters mentioned that the number one cause for fires in College Station is cooking fires. The second cause is unattended candles. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Little River-Academy rebuilds volunteer fire department It has been nearly five months since the Little River-Academy's Volunteer Fire Department resigned. This left the area dependent on neighboring departments in case of an emergency. Chief Charles Young is going over applications and keeping equipment up and running. "I'd like to have at least eight to ten firefighters slash E.M.S.," Young said. "Anybody that's qualified as firefighters or got firefighting experience that's what we are really hurting for right now." Not only is he rebuilding the department, but also it's reputation. "The public, they've got a right to be skeptical," Young said. "I hope that they'll eventually come around and say okay these guys and ladies are here to serve the community." According to Young, there is an independent board of directors that will monitor the department. KCEN-TV NBC 6 CENTRALTEXASNOW.COM PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Worcester Fire Department Lt. The fire grew to four alarms, and at one point, firefighters issued a mayday call from the third floor of the building. "Lt. WDIO-DT ABC 10 DULUTH Differing guidelines sent to fire, police employees in Louisiana on whether they can attend Trump rally With President Donald Trump holding a rally in two days in Bossier City, members of local police and fire departments questioned if they could attend if they're off-duty. But they've received conflicting answers. Employees are being told two different things from two different state offices, which is putting their supervisors in a sticky situation. While one state lawmaker is looking to change that. The issue of whether municipal police and fire employees can attend President Trump's rally off-duty and in plain clothing started last week. The Office of State Examiner Fire and Police Civil Service sent out emails detailing what employees can and cannot do that's considered political activity. According to the Louisiana Civil Service President Adrienne Bordelon, "if an employee is at a political rally they could face a 30-day working suspension for first offense and termination for 2nd offense of which they can be barred for at least six years." ARKLATEX HOMEPAGE Ohio fire stations add sensory bags for patients with autism The Clearcreek Township Fire Department has added sensory bags to help firefighters and paramedics when they respond to a scene involving someone on the autism spectrum. Firefighter and paramedic Eric Henry was the brainchild behind the department's new addition and did research into what items would help first responders to calm a child or adult with autism. "We were sitting there talking about them visiting the fire department one day and I was thinking about how we were equipped to deal with autistic people within our community," Henry said. "We have a lot of children that we're going to interact with all the time and there is a high probability that we're going to run into someone with autism." The sensory bags contain items to keep the subject's hands busy, reduce the noise around them and even to help them communicate with first responders. Henry equipped all three stations with sensory bags for less than $300. WXIX-TV FOX 19 CINCINNATI Firefighter chopper pad: An exclusive look at 69 Bravo in the Santa Monica Mountains VIDEO: It's a remote mountaintop site with million-dollar views and a priceless purpose. Designated by the Los Angeles County Fire Department as ''Bravo 69'' it's a huge swath of land high above Topanga Canyon with 360 views. The helicopter pad is able to be used by LA County Fire thanks to an unusual ''licensing'' agreement the county made with a retired wealthy businessman who owns the site and was going to develop it. The property is being used for public safety as a refueling facility for fire helicopters, with 10,000 gallons of water on-site in especially tanks, plus hookups to fire hydrant and storage, and more. In a firefight, time is of the essence — to drop water, turn around, re-fill and then get back to the blaze. This location, the middle of the mountains is a crucial resource.
