Crews Battle Dallas Apartment Fire Crews battled an apartment fire in far North Dallas Tuesday morning. Firefighters were called to the scene around 9:41 a.m. to an apartment complex located at 14100 Montfort Road. Crews observed smoke and flames coming from the first floor of a building where investigators said the fire started. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, there were at least 3 people, a mother and her two children, inside the apartment when the fire began, but they were able to make it out safely. The fire was accidental in nature and was the result of one of the children in the apartment playing with candles, according to investigators. The fire was mostly contained to the apartment of origin, with some fire extension getting into the unit directly above; leaving at least two units uninhabitable. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH New Braunfels Fire Department contains mulch blazes PHOTO: New Braunfels Fire Department units continue to monitor the site of a large mulch fire, which began overnight at a business located in the 300 block of Solms Road, NBFD officials said. Crews have contained the fire as of 6 a.m. Tuesday thanks to a coordinated effort to stop the spread of the fire, and will remain on scene for at least 24 hours as they allow the fire to burn out on its own. When the fire department arrived around 1:00 a.m. they found two piles of burning mulch, which eventually sparked two more piles, said David Ferguson, city of New Braunfels communications manager. Responding agencies worked with Cemex, New Braunfels Utilities along with Comal County and City of New Braunfels street crews to utilize heavy duty equipment to spread materials and prevent further spread of the fire. NEW BRAUNFELS HERALD-ZEITUNG Fire under control at College Station apartment complex College Station and Bryan firefighters responded Tuesday night to an apartment fire in the 2300 block of Cottage Lane at The Cottages of College Station. The fire was reported just after 7:00 p.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene in less than five minutes. At least one unit has water damage, according to Battalion Chief Mike Clements, but most of the fire damage is contained to the exterior of the building. It's unclear what started the blaze but firefighters said they had to rescue two residents who were unable to exit the building because of a blocked door. No injuries were reported. Those residents who are temporarily displaced are receiving assistance. A total of 14 fire department units and 44 personnel from CSFD and BFD responded to the scene. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Marshall High School cancels school due to fire, automotive shop damaged A fire at Marshall High School led to class cancellations for the day. According to Marshall High School's official Facebook page, the fire has now been contained. Marshal Fire Chief Reggie Cooper said that at 7:02 a.m. fire units received a call to the high school for a reported fire in the school's automotive shop. Upon arrival, firefighters noted heavy smoke throughout the shop area and some areas where remnants of the original fire continued to smolder. Though no active fire was indicated upon arrival, moderate damage to the structure and equipment was sustained throughout the shop. Cooper said the incident was prior to the daily school session so no students were on-campus during the fire incident. No injuries were reported to school staff, students or with any firefighters. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Update: Abilene authorities search for people staying at St. Ann's Hospital at time of fire, determining if fire was accident or intentional Not quite one week has passed since the old St. Ann's Hospital burned down in North Abilene. New developments include a search for people who were staying in the building without permission. St. Ann's went up in flames Thursday night, October 6 in the 1300 block of Cypress Street. While the Abilene Fire Department (AFD) continues to investigate the fire, KTAB/KRBC was told, ‘several non authorized individuals‘ were staying at the building when the fire was set. Now, authorities are working to identify them and talk with them to figure out if the fire was an accident, or if it was intentionally set. In the latest update from the owners of the building, Habitat for Humanity Abilene said it still plans to build single-family detached homes in place of the original-standing hospital. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Pregnant woman hears loud pop before fire destroys her rented home in San Antonio A pregnant woman made it out safely as her rented home went up in flames late Tuesday night. The fire started around 10:30 p.m. at a home off Fenfield Avenue near Southwest Military Drive on the Southwest Side. The woman told San Antonio Fire Department officials that she was inside the home, which is a small two-story building in the backyard of the main residence, when she heard a loud pop. When she went outside to check, she noticed the side of the building was on fire. The fire spread quickly and destroyed the small building. Investigators believe this was accidental, but were on scene to find out exactly what caused the fire. No injuries were reported. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Over a dozen people displaced after fire roars through multiple Pennsylvania homes VIDEO: A fire quickly consumed a string of row homes in West Philadelphia on Tuesday, putting over a dozen people out of their homes. Velice Hids, who lives on the 200 block of North Hobart Street, says she smelled smoke and heard a loud smack before running to the window to see where the startling noise could have come from. As soon as she looked out her window, she says she saw flames shooting from the row home across the street. "It was jumping from house to house. I never saw anything like that in my life before," said Hids. Reacting immediately, Hids ran across the street and began banging on the door of her 91-year-old neighbor, Theresa Pope, who lives alone and right next door to where the fire started. "It was scary. It was scary. I broke out a window. I just wanted to make sure she wasn't in the house, that's all," said Hids. WTXF-TV FOX 29 PHILADELPHIA App helps EMTs coordinate with emergency room at New York hospital Catholic Health has started using an app that helps EMTs better communicate with emergency rooms, and says it may be a potential saver, especially when seconds count. It's called Pulsara and installed on an EMTs smartphone or tablet, allowing them to engage in real-time consultation with emergency room doctors and nurses to triage and assess patients while they are en route to the hospital. "Traditionally EMTs have phoned into a number directly to the emergency room, but sometimes if the doctor is not there, or tending to another patient, the nurse has to go find them," explained Lori Dufrense, who oversees all of the emergency rooms in the Catholic Health system locally. "This way not only are the doctor and the emergency room staff notified, but so are the cardiac team if it's a heart attack, or the neuro team if it's a stroke patient." WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO Kentucky: Water crews demonstrate how they maintain Louisville's 25,000 fire hydrants VIDEO: The Louisville Water Company held a demonstration Tuesday in honor of Fire Prevention Week, showing how crucial its hydrants are around the city. Louisville Water owns and maintains around 25,000 fire hydrants throughout the city. It has an entire team that tests, services and maintains the hydrants year-round. Crews offered a first-hand look Tuesday at how that's done. "We're a two-man crew — plumber leader and plumber leader assistant — and we're one of two trucks that maintain and repair all the hydrants in the city, be them damaged or leaking or inoperable," said Chris Meeks with Louisville Water. Thanks to new technology, firefighters are now able to find hydrants before arriving on scene. Louisville Fire has access to a map — through phones and iPads — that gives responders directions and shows exactly where the hydrants are in that area so they can be hooked into faster. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE Look at this beauty: 1934 firetruck to return to Massachusetts PHOTO: The fire department is having an open house on Saturday, and the department plans to have a very special visitor. After it was rebuilt in Washington state, a 1934 Seagrave fire truck will arrive in Beverly on Wednesday and be prepared before it comes home to Ipswich, completing an almost 90-year journey that saw it owned by people in Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, and Washington. The truck was recently purchased by Ora CEO Stuart Abelson, who wants the rig to go on display in Ipswich rather than get stored in a garage somewhere. The owner before Abelson was James Sullivan, a middle-school STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teacher in Brier, Wash. IPSWICH LOCAL NEWS Anniversary of Minnesota's worst ever natural disaster October 12th marks the start of what is still known as the worst natural disaster to ever hit Minnesota. The Minnesota Historical Society says more than 450 people died in the Cloquet, Duluth and Moose Lake fires. More than 1,500 square miles were scorched and towns and villages burned flat. The whole event lasted less than 15 hours from beginning to end. The fire began around midday on Saturday, October 12th, 1918. By 3:00 a.m. Sunday all was over except for some smoldering. The event is primarily called the Cloquet fire, but it was really 50 or more fires that all combined into one event. In the Kettle River area, people saved themselves in streams, ditches and open fields. Many died either by the fire or in root cellars by suffocation. As the fire reached Moose Lake, relief trains rescued a few hundred people. WJON-FM 95.3 ST. CLOUD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
