Multiple fire departments battle blaze at Bell County business VIDEO: A large fire has broken out at a Salado business, causing toxic smoke to fill the area, the Bell County Fire Marshal tells 6 News. According to Bell County Fire Marshal Shane Geers, the Salado Supply House, an appliance sales and repair shop, caught fire, causing a large blaze. Geers said the fire began shortly after 4 p.m. on Oct. 15. Three workers and two customers were reportedly inside but no injuries were reported and all three were able to evacuate. The area was blocked off on FM 1670 while firefighters worked to contain the toxic smoke, Geers said. The building was reportedly being used to store refrigerant and refrigerators. Geers said the combustible nature of those caused multiple secondary explosions. CONCHO VALLEY HOMEPAGE El Paso Fire Department launches new platform to improve emergency response VIDEO: The El Paso Fire Department is launching a new platform to improve emergency response. In a social media post, the El Paso Fire Department said it has partnered up with its technology provider, First Due, to launch "Community Connect," a free and user-friendly platform where residents can share critical household information such as the number of people living in the home, special needs, gate codes, utility shutoff locations, and pet information. VIDEOS: Officials suspect squatters caused fire that tore through homes in New Jersey, displacing dozens A massive 3-alarm fire tore through a row of homes in Irvington, New Jersey, on Tuesday, displacing dozens of residents. Firefighters responded to 71 Montgomery Ave. just before 5 p.m. for reports of a fire in the vacant residential building, according to Newark officials. The fire extended from 71 Montgomery Ave. to 65, 67, 73 and 75 Montgomery. The flames and smoke bleeding through the rooftops on Montgomery Avenue spread to 5 houses altogether. Thick black smoke could be seen from 20 miles away, according to NewsCopter7. Multiple trees around the house also caught on fire at one point, and a car in the driveway was also ablaze. Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to more homes, and some had to be evacuated. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK North Carolina firefighters continue service despite station damage, losses; repairs underway VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Clyde Fire Department performed rescues and evacuations during Hurricane Helene, but flood waters rose to historic levels. Clyde has experienced flooding from Ivan, Frances and Fred. But, it took Helene to reach the Clyde Fire Department and cause damage. "We had five feet of water in our station. As long as we've ever seen floods, it has never come in our station like it did," said Chief Wentfard Henson. He says the water just kept coming in. "The whole lower floor. It destroyed the whole bottom section. It all had to be torn out. Driers, vending machines. We lost about 10 sets of gear that washed down the river," Henson said. One set of turn-out gear, he says, costs $4,500. He says insurance will help recoup the cost. Henson also said water damaged two fire trucks, but one has been repaired and is back in service. WLOS-TV ABC/MYNETWORK TV 13 ASHEVILLE Fire district in Ohio invests more than $400,000 in new heart monitors VIDEO: West Licking Fire District invested more than $400,000 in new heart monitors. It is the only fire department in the state, and one of few in the country, to have this technology. District leaders say it will help save more lives. The new Lifepak 35 made by Stryker has a more durable touchscreen that is waterproof, and it takes 15 different pictures of the heart at a time instead of 12, like the old machines. The cost of the device is $55,000 to $60,000 per unit. "We have a district that is willing to see the need for this and say, 'Hey, we want the best equipment we can get for our medics to put on the trucks, so that our citizens, our patients can have the best, most updated technology,'" said West Licking Fire District Lt. Andrew Jones. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS Column: Do air pollution and extreme temperatures increase 911 emergency calls? Researchers at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health will use air quality sensors, temperature measurements and a national database of 911 emergency medical services calls to evaluate the links between environmental exposures, such as air pollution and temperature, and EMS transports for health emergencies. Emergency medical services represent a critical facet of the public health infrastructure that could be increasingly stressed by climate change, but the nationwide burden on EMS systems associated with environmental exposures remains unknown. "Our climate is becoming hotter and more unpredictable, and that leads to elevated levels of air pollution and extreme temperatures that have dangerous health effects," said lead researcher Chris Lim, PhD, an assistant professor at the Zuckerman College of Public Health. THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA HEALTH SCIENCES Fires have not been kind to historical landmarks in Washington's port city of Tacoma PHOTOS: Tacoma has a roster of historic buildings that serve as reminders of its beginnings and create a sense of place and heritage. However, many buildings from the City of Destiny's beginnings are just footnotes after they fell over time. Some buildings among them are still the focus of conversations long after disappearing from the landscape. And oddly enough, many of the top landmark buildings in Tacoma lost to history went down in flames. Chief among the most-talked-about, gone-but-not-forgotten building that no longer exists is the once-grand Tacoma Hotel, which once hosted the top, well-to-do tourists to the city after it opened for business in 1884 before it burned to the ground in 1935. Maybe it is remembered because of its grandeur or the devastating fire that sealed its fate, but few discussions about local landmarks, past and present, lack stories and antidotes about the lost gem.
