Around 100 firefighters respond to large structure fire in San Antonio Several businesses suffered damage after a massive fire broke out Tuesday afternoon, initiating a response of around 100 firefighters, officials said. The call for the fire came out just before 3:30 p.m. in the 11000 block of Wye Drive. San Antonio Fire Department officials said that when crews pulled out of their fire stations to respond, they saw heavy fire and immediately called for backup resources. SAFD said there was heavy smoke and fire when they arrived, and all occupants of the commercial business area were evacuated. The crews not only battled heavy fire, but wind as well. The structure housed 18 businesses inside, as many as five of which may have suffered fire damage, according to SAFD. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO 16 condos destroyed by fire in Port Isabel An overnight fire at the Oyster Cove Condominiums in Port Isabel on Tuesday night destroyed two buildings at the complex. According to Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema, the fire started around 10:30 p.m. Multiple fire departments arrived to help put out the blaze and finally did so at around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The fire destroyed two condominium buildings with eight units in each, Oyster Cove Condominiums manager Sandy Taylor told reporter Adam Cardona. In all 16 units were damaged by the overnight blaze. Hockema said shelters have been set up at the South Padre Island Event Center for families who were displaced or anyone who is unable to get home due to Island Avenue being blocked. "At this point, we've lost two apartment structures on Harbor Island. However, we had no reported injuries and no reported fatalities," said Hockema. KVEO-TV NBC/CBS 23 BROWNSVILLE Prop 'C' on Corpus Christi bond looks to modernize aged buildings for area first responders The city of Corpus Christi is putting several bond propositions in front of voters this November. Among them, $125 million worth of improvements to streets, parks, libraries and public safety. 3NEWS wanted to focus on prop 'C' that centers around five public safety projects valued at $10 million. At the corner of Horne Road and Greenwood Drive, Corpus Christi Fire Station No. 10 is considered a second home for its crew. However, the building is starting to show its age, something Captain Cody Eyring said is very noticeable. "The city has done a good job at getting us new units and some of the new trucks can't fit in our station because of the size and parameters of the station that makes it difficult," he said. Prop 'C' on the November Ballot could begin the process to give the firefighters a new and larger space, along with Fire Station No. 8 on Kostoryz Road. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Cooking fire breaks out at BBQ restaurant in east Austin A grease fire broke out at an East Austin BBQ-style restaurant on Wednesday morning. The Austin Fire Department said they responded to the structure fire call at Sam's BBQ located at 2000 E. 12th Street around 8:50 a.m. Fire crews quickly attacked the flames and extinguished the fire by 9:04 a.m. Fire officials say it was a fire caused by cooking grease and was contained to the exhaust system, so it did not extend too far into the restaurant. So far, no injuries have been reported. Austin Fire said Austin Code is on scene to expedite opening the restaurant back up for business. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Kitchen fire displaces apartment tenants in College Station Tenants in at least one apartment in College Station will be temporarily displaced following a kitchen fire Tuesday evening. The fire was reported at an apartment building at Navarro Drive and Pendernales Drive. College Station firefighters say 911 was notified after neighbors noticed smoke coming from inside one of the apartments. Firefighters arrived on the scene within two minutes of the call and stopped the fire from doing more widespread damage. Two apartments have smoke damage but nobody was injured. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Second fire in 2 weeks claims remains of old St. Ann's Hospital in north Abilene VIDEO/PHOTO: Less than two weeks after the old St. Ann's Hospital suffered major damage from an overnight structure fire, a second fire Tuesday morning destroyed what was left. "This building has stood for the better part of a century. It has been abandoned for about a quarter century," said Habitat for Humanity Abilene CEO, Rosten Callarman. The property was donated to Habitat earlier in the year, with plans to demolish the already crumbling structure and build affordable single-family homes on the lots. Callarman told KTAB/KRBC the past two fires are reminders that change needs to happen and soon. "I hope that what Abilene sees here is an opportunity to join together, to build something better, and to not just stop once we've torn this building down and put something better in its place," Callarman offered. VIDEO: Man uses drone to help firefighters identify hotspots from massive Georgia apartment complex fire People driving through Midtown Tuesday could probably still smell the smoke from a massive fire that destroyed an apartment complex on Monday night. The fire started in the Peachtree Walk Apartments, and damaged a number of businesses on 12th Street. Firefighters were finally able to knock it down with some help from a drone pilot who helped them identify the hotspots. Fire investigators are back on scene assessing the damage and again, Fess Burgess was here to help. He started flying drones three years ago. "A lot of practice, a few crashes, it is risky," he said. He was flying in Midtown with some friends Monday night when they heard how fast the fire was spreading. "This drone here has thermal capabilities, so it can show hotspots, you can see what's hot and what's not," he said. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Remembering the 23rd Street Fire that killed 12 firefighters in New York PHOTOS: On Oct. 17, 1966, 12 firefighters were killed in what was the deadliest day for the New York City Fire Department until the 9/11 terror attacks. Two chiefs, two lieutenants and eight firefighters lost their lives as they tried to battle a fire at 22nd St. by entering a building on 23rd St. before it collapsed. The call came in at around 9:36 p.m. at an art dealer located at 7 East 22nd Street, off of Broadway. The four-story brownstone was so engulfed by smoke and heat that it became impossible to enter through the 22nd Street side of the building. While the dealer had stored highly flammable lacquer, paint and finished wood frames in the basement that fueled the fire, the cause was unknown, according to the NYFD. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE New for firefighters: A guide for talking with doctors A newly published guide is intended to help firefighters talk with their health care provider about the unique health risks they face on the job. Developed by the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the First Responder Center for Excellence, the Provider's Guide to Firefighter Medical Evaluations details the physical challenges firefighters face and how they impact health. It also features research findings on the risks of cardiovascular disease, cancers, sleep disorders, lung disease and behavioral health. For instance, the guide lists 19 different types of cancers that firefighters are at increased risk of as a result of on-the-job exposures. They include bladder, lung, kidney and colon cancer. In addition, it lists 11 different carcinogens found in smoke. In June, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer officially classified firefighting as a carcinogenic profession. SAFETY AND HEALTH University tests new technology to help seniors during California's Great ShakeOut, future disasters What do you do when there's an earthquake? Drop, cover and hold on, says the Earthquake Country Alliance, a "public-private-grassroots" partnership made up of people, organizations and regional alliances geared around raising disaster preparedness in the face of earthquakes and tsunamis. Orange County residents may receive text alerts Thursday morning, encouraging them to do just that and take cover as part of the statewide Great California Shakeout. First staged in Southern California by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2008, it returns at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, when about 9.4 million people statewide will participate in the earthquake drill. Of that, an estimated 865,820 people in Orange County will take part. That includes about 5,000 childcare and preschools, 510,000 schools, 47,000 local government bodies and 6,000 senior facilities. DAILY PILOT - METERED SITE New fire rescue units hit the streets in Florida city The first of more planned advanced Critical Care Rescue Units are operating on Jacksonville's streets now, funded from Jacksonville's 2023 budget. Along with the usual advanced life-saving equipment when someone is injured in a fire, crash or other incident, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department's two new rescue units also carry high-level critical care medications like blood clot stabilizers and drugs to lower rapid heart rates. It also is the first time that blood and plasma for transfusions has been carried by paramedics, all specially trained to handle them as well as a ventilator, IV pump and other life-saving gear at a trauma scene or en route to a hospital. The new rescue units will be sent out to incidents where that added gear and paramedic training is really needed to save a life, Fire Chief Keith Powers said.
