VIDEO: A firefighter has been transported to the hospital after putting out a housefire in southeast Houston Wednesday, officials with the Houston Fire Department said. Firefighters received reports about a house fire near the 5000 block of Dumore. Officials said when they arrived at the scene, they began performing an offensive attack to put the blaze out. According to HFD, one firefighter was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion. He is reportedly in stable condition. The resident living at the home was able to escape safely, HFD said. Arson investigators are at the scene to determine what caused the fire. Drivers are urged to avoid the area due to heavy emergency traffic.

Fire officials say one was hurt when an abandoned building in the Sheldon area was torched overnight, resulting in massive flames. The fire happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Garrett Road and C.E. King Parkway. Video from the scene showed the building completely engulfed in flames. Sheldon Community firefighters said they believe someone intentionally started the fire. The building, which had been home to several businesses over the years, has been vacant since 2017. It was reportedly set for demolition. There was no word on possible suspects. Officials are continuing to investigate exactly how the fire started.

Lubbock police say four people were found dead inside a home that was destroyed by a fire early Wednesday morning. Just after 1 a.m., officers responded to a shots fired call near 124th and Oxford Ave. where they found the home on fire. Officers were unable to make entry and cleared residences to the east and west. Lubbock Fire Rescue was called at 1:15 a.m. and fire crews arrived on scene at 1:22 a.m. to the home fully engulfed. The fire was contained to the single residence and was put out by 2:09 a.m. That's when investigators found the four dead inside. Police have not confirmed if there is a connection between the shooting call and the fire. "Anywhere in Lubbock an event like this is out of the ordinary. As always, we are going to investigate and take it very seriously and figure out all the facts. This is very early-on, very preliminary," LPD Lieutenant Brady Cross said.

The city of Denton allocates millions of dollars to the Denton Fire Department each fiscal year. But what happens to that money in the hands of the department? The department answered that question Saturday with its Fire Ops 101 event, where city and state officials along with other participants got to be firefighters for the day and try out the equipment themselves. Jason Ballard, president of the Denton Fire Fighters Association, said during introductions that when the department goes to decision makers asking for equipment, it's important to show it's being put to good use. That was part of the purpose of Saturday's event. Denton's mayor, city manager, members of the City Council and Chamber of Commerce, along with several other local and statewide public officials, got the chance to rescue "victims," extinguish fires, drive trucks and and cut open crashed cars.

A home was destroyed and a man is in custody after a house fire in far Southwest Bexar County late Tuesday night. The fire was called in around 11 p.m. at a home in the 7800 block of Rockport Road, not far from Loop 1604 and Somerset Road. According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, firefighters from the Bexar County Fire Department and Lytle Fire Department arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames. They were able to put the fire out quickly and without incident. The BCSO said the fire may have been intentionally set by a man staying at the home. The man was detained by deputies as he attempted to flee, the sheriff's office said. His name and age were not released. The BCSO said the family staying at the home told them he likely has started additional fires in the past. The home is now considered a total loss.

Corpus Christi Firefighters are going pink to support the fight against Breast Cancer. Throughout the month of October, you'll see them wearing pink while on duty and in the community. Firefighters are also selling shirts to raise money for Cancer research. Firefighters are familiar with the challenges a Cancer diagnosis brings because they're at high risk of the disease. Studies show Cancer can be directly linked to chemicals found in smoke. "All the proceeds from our shirt sales, which is about $100,000, we give back to the community. We also give, not much but a little bit, to firefighters in the surrounding area who are battling Cancer. That's just to kind of help offset cost for things like going to MD Anderson, " said Johhny Stobbs, President of Professional Firefighters of Corpus Christi.

St. Louis firefighters were at the scene of a large fire at an abandoned warehouse near the Mississippi River just north of the Gateway Arch. The St. Louis Fire Department said the fire is at a warehouse near the intersection of North 1st Street and O'Fallon Street. The first call for the fire came out at around 7 p.m. As of 8:30, the fire department said 100 firefighters responded to the scene and were fighting the fire. They said that embers from the fire were "threatening the Laclede Power Generation facility," a former power plant. The warehouse was the former Beck & Corbitt Iron Company building, which was more than 100 years old. Firefighters said one person, who may have been staying inside the building, was injured. The person's injuries were not life-threatening.

Worcester firefighter Ryan Kelley had a scab on his temple for two years that never really healed. He hadn't done anything about it, when his whole truck decided to attend a free cancer screening held by DetecTogether and UMass Memorial Health at Polar Park last year. When doctors from UMass saw the scab, they told Kelley it looked like basal cell skin cancer. He worked with them to schedule a biopsy for the next morning. The biopsy revealed it was a tumor and it was skin cancer. They scheduled the surgery to remove the tumor a month later and now Kelly is cancer-free and goes for cancer screenings every six months. Had they not had the free screening, Kelley said, he would probably still have a tumor.

The 7th Annual JBJ Soul Kitchen Chili Cook-Off highlighted eleven local first responder units including Fire, Police and EMT, and their chili, but the event was so much more – a celebration of community. The attendees donated more than 580 pounds of food for Fulfill's People's Pantry, totaling 386 meals, and Jon Bon Jovi was on hand to taste each entry and thank the first responders for their service. The event was held at The B.E.A.T. (Bring Everyone All Together) Center in Toms River, which has been celebrating re-inviting the community back into the Center, after being forced to close to the public during the pandemic. The B.E.A.T. Center represents a joint venture between JBJ Soul Kitchen, Fulfill and Fulfill's People's Pantry. Fulfill conducts a culinary training program and has a satellite warehouse at the Center.

PHOTO: Emergency crews on the upper Bay will soon be able to respond to those tricky shallow-water rescues more easily and safely. The all-volunteer Susquehanna Hose Company (SHCo) in Havre de Grace just announced they're getting a state-of-the-art airboat. It will be the department's first vessel of this kind and the only airboat in service in the area. SHCo, whose rescue boat covers the water from Turkey Point up the Susquehanna River, frequently responds to 911 calls in the Susquehanna Flats. These rescues are difficult at best and sometimes downright dangerous for emergency responders. SHCo Division 3 1st Lt. Charlie Jones recalls multiple incidents when duck hunters, stranded kayakers, or bass boaters find themselves stuck in the mud or unable to combat high winds. The fire department's existing rescue boat is 35' and has become stuck on sandbars itself when attempting to rescue other boaters.
