KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO ‘Every season is fire season': Wichita Falls Fire Chief, city talk safety, prevention during town hall After a year of large fires blazing across the state, city officials encourage everyone to refresh their fire safety skills. Wichita Falls Fire Chief Donald Hughes joined city councilors and Mayor Tim Short for a town hall on Monday, Sept. 9, to discuss the importance of fire prevention with the public. Hughes encouraged the dozens in attendance to mitigate, mitigate, mitigate, and said that, though the meeting is over, fire awareness is always apt. "Every season is fire season," Hughes said. With a wet first half of 2024, a drier back half is just around the corner. And as wildfires thrive near Wichita Falls, city officials are working to keep you fire-aware. "They're getting a little closer to home. We had some really bad ones here in the area in 2006, 2011," Short said. VIDEO: Massive strip mall fire in Massachusetts destroys multiple businesses Multiple businesses in Lynnfield were destroyed Tuesday night when intense flames tore through a strip mall. The fire happened around 9 p.m. at the strip mall on Post Office Square. Daylight revealed significant damage to multiple businesses. Lynnfield Fire Chief Glenn Davis said most of the businesses will likely be a total loss. No injuries have been reported following the fire, which happened while the businesses were closed. Initial reports indicated that the fire may have started somewhere near Old Towne Market, which is in the middle of the strip mall. Flames then spread to nearby businesses, including a Dunkin'. Davis said it is an old building with no sprinklers. There's a common attic space that runs the whole length of the strip mall, allowing the fire to spread very quickly. Multiple fire departments were required to put out the flames. WBZ-TV CBS 4 BOSTON Nearly 17K first responders are suffering cancers, diseases linked to 9/11 over two decades later More than 45,000 people are living with the physical manifestations of the September 11 attacks more than two decades after the tragedy. At least 45,200 civilians and officers from the FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are suffering from at least one cancer or disease that has been directly linked to the largest terrorist attack in history. The whopping total is 1,408% greater than the death toll for the tragedy itself: 2,997 victims were killed in the Twin Tower collapse and aftermath. The shocking number reflects the amount of victims enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program with verified illnesses — but because the project only recognizes some cancers and diseases, officials warn the true total of sick survivors is much higher. NEW YORK POST Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes helps honor first responders by serving meals and presenting checks VIDEO: Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes was up early on Tuesday to give back to local first responders. Skenes traded his baseball glove for an apron and some bottles of barbecue sauce, serving up a free hot meal and some big checks to local first responders. "The sacrifices that you make, whether you recognize it or not, are more than any of us can ever repay you for," Skenes told first responders. "It's nice because you get a celebrity like Paul Skenes, you know, showing up at these events — a lot of people don't understand we are volunteer, we do get some money from the borough, but most of our money we have to go out and raise," said Chief Joseph Cambest with the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company. Skenes, the Gary Sinise Foundation and American Tire Distributors presented six Pittsburgh-area departments with $150,000 to buy life-saving equipment.
