Dallas apartment explosion firefighters given Star of Texas Award The Governor of Texas awarded the Star of Texas Award to three Dallas Fire Rescue responders who were injured in the September 2021 explosion at a Highland Hills apartment complex. Captain Christ Gadomski, Driver Engineer Ronald Hall and Officer Pauline Perez received the award in Austin this week. They were injured in the explosion, which was caused by a gas leak. Gadomski spent four weeks in the hospital after the accident. The explosion injured eight people, including the firefighters, and a 28-year-old man was charged with multiple counts of deadly conduct, accused of firing a shot that caused the leak. "The award is given out annually to honor peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders either killed or sustained serious injuries in the line of duty," according to a message from Dallas Fire Rescue. It was a group photo taken in 1927 of the first fire engine along with the first 13 volunteer firefighters in Odessa. Taylor, who has been researching the history of Odessa Fire and Rescue since the 80s, was stunned when he came across the photo on the website Traces of Texas. "I was excited," Taylor said. "That's the first clear image." Now, Taylor hopes to identify all 13 men in that photo. He has five of them identified so far but is hoping the public can help out with the remaining eight. He has the names but he needs to know which name goes to which face. "I'm trying to get all the guys identified," Taylor said. The ones Taylor has identified are Joe McCown, Sam McCown, Robert Morgan Neil, George Shows and James H. Price. ODESSA AMERICAN ONLINE Groves firefighter injured during home blaze response A Groves firefighter was sent to UTMB Galveston for treatment for smoke inhalation following a weekend house fire. Groves Fire Chief Lance Billeaud said authorities first thought the firefighter was suffering from heat exhaustion but learned he suffered smoke inhalation. The man was flown to the Galveston hospital for additional treatment and is doing well as of Tuesday afternoon. Billeaud said the firefighter is expected to make a full recovery and is expected home this week. The fire happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 7500 block of Live Oak. Nederland and Port Neches fire department personnel also responded as part of an Automatic Aid agreement. When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke showing from the back of the house, Billeaud said. The fire is believed to have started on the back porch, then spread to the attic. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Possible structure fire at Merkel nursing home caused by A/C malfunctions Residents of the Merkel Nursing Center had an evacuation scare Tuesday afternoon due to an overheated air conditioning unit and smoke within the facility. According to a Facebook post from Merkel Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), units were dispatched to the nursing home in the 1700 block of North 1st Street around 3:30 p.m., where smoke was found in the hallways. Because the Merkel Nursing Center is labeled as a high life hazard, responding agencies knew evacuations were possible and reached out for additional assistance. Multiple fire agencies in surrounding areas responded; including Merkel, Trent, Tye, View, Merkel police, Tye police and Taylor EMS. Through investigation, it was discovered that an air conditioning unit's blower motor overheated, which emitted an ‘electrical smell' and light smoke in the hallways. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE City of Lubbock to start issuing fines for cut gas lines The City Council has implemented a new ordinance that will allow the issuance of fines to contractors who cut through underground gas lines. Lubbock Fire Rescue Chief Shaun Fogerson says 35 out of the 78 strikes so far this year were due to contractor error. During his presentation to the council this afternoon, he said it costs $3500 just to send a fire engine crew to a gas leak, and that doesn't even include additional costs for however long it continues to leak. This new change in the ordinance will also allow contractors to repair water lines in the roadways. Scrutiny on the frequency of cut gas lines increased earlier this year after a house exploded in central Lubbock due to a third-party contracting company striking a two-inch gas line. ODESSA AMERICAN ONLINE Volunteer fire departments in New York can now charge for an ambulance; it could save rural EMS service In much of America, if you call an ambulance, you get a bill afterwards. But in rural New York state, where a lot of emergency services are bundled in with fire departments, that often doesn't happen. Volunteer fire departments haven't been allowed to charge for ambulance service. But that means they've had to eat the cost. A new bill, passed along with the NY State budget this summer, changes that. It's called the EMS Cost Recovery Act and was sponsored by Assemblyman Billy Jones. A version of this legislation has been in the works for decades, and many local fire departments are breathing a sigh of relief. In New York, fire departments provide EMS coverage to nearly half of the state. You'll find about 180 fire departments across the North Country. The vast majority of them are volunteer — people from the community get trained and fight fires in their community. Nicole Walters and John Ford with the East Jackson Volunteer Fire Department said they came to the training to become more prepared. "We're used to interior firefighting, and this right here is something different, something we're looking forward to. Any kind of fire training we look forward to, especially as volunteers. We try to soak it up as much as we can," Ford said. Officials said the training included vehicle extraction, smoke house rescue training and putting out gas pump and fuel tank flames. Emergency Services Manager Kaci Diantoniis said the company is happy offer the free, specialized training. WLOX-TV ABC/CBS 13 BILOXI New Massachusetts Fire ATV Paid for With Donated Cans PHOTO: To pay for its new emergency response all-terrain vehicle, the Fire Department sorted and recycled about 217,000 cans donated by community members. The Lanesborough Fireman's Association bought the $15,000 vehicle, a Can-Am Outlander Max XT, entirely with money from its Cans for Lives program, which helps fund the purchase of emergency equipment and vehicles. After sorting, members bring the cans to a facility in Vermont, getting 7 cents for each one. "We've been able to, essentially, partner with the citizens of the town to help bring this to life for us," said Glen Storie, president of the Lanesborough Fireman's Association. "Their effort to bring the cans here that they collect all year long, and then the effort the membership here puts in to collecting them, sorting them." IBERKSHIRES.COM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
