Fort Worth Firefighters Sound Alarm Over Staffing Some Fort Worth firefighters are sounding the alarm over a staffing shortage that they say threatens to push response times higher. The city council Tuesday night approved a $1.8 billion budget that included an extra 10 firefighters citywide, and they were a last-minute addition. Fire Chief Jim Davis had said the department was 250 firefighters short and proposed adding 50 a year for the next five years. "There is no sugarcoating the severity of this situation," said Capt. Michael Glynn, president of the firefighters association. "Seconds count when responding to a fire or emergency medical situation and today it takes much longer than it did 10 years ago." According to the city figures provided by Glynn, the number of firefighters has increased 10% in the last decade while the population shot up 23% during the same time period. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO College Station: A&M researchers offering new solution to California's wildfire problem A California-based utility company is utilizing a tool developed at Texas A&M University to help prevent wildfires before they start. The tool - called a distribution fault anticipator or DFA - is a system that detects circuit anomalies and notifies utility operators before they can cause a power outage or spark a fire. California's pacific gas and electric company is adding over 600 DFA's over the next three years in order to detect and prevent wildfires. "We have the opportunity of watching for things that look abnormal on a power line and then subsequently we can find those things and fix them before we have a catastrophic failure that starts the fire." said Don Russell, professor of Electrical Engineering, Texas A&M. In addition to California, the DFA's has also been utilized by companies located in Texas, Georgia, as well as overseas. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Grape Creek home a ‘total loss' after four volunteer fire departments contain blaze Members of the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department say they were dispatched to a structure fire on the 10600 block of Cottontail Lane shortly after 8:30 this morning, Tuesday, September 21, 2021. Firefighters say they arrived on the scene to find a 1200 – 1400 square-foot home, approximately half of which was burning. They say they were advised occupants had evacuated the building. "Due to fire involvement, [spread and intensity of the fire], and shortage of personnel on-scene we immediately went into what's called defensive operations," said a representative from the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department. "Which is where we stand back, keep the fire confined to the structure of origin." "We were also having to battle high winds coming in from the North, so our main priority was just to keep this fire here on this property." Arkansas recycling center 'fully engulfed' after explosive warehouse fire VIDEO: According to the Little Rock Fire Department, the Goldman Recycling building was "fully engulfed" and created a large dark cloud of smoke on Tuesday evening. The recycling center is located at 1701 E. 14th Street. The Little Rock Police Department asked people to avoid the immediate area. Neighboring the recycling center is a Budweiser distribution center. An employee at the distribution center said the fire began around 5 p.m. He said employees began driving trucks out of the parking lot to avoid fire damage. No injuries have been reported. According to the fire department, the fire started in the metals warehouse and propane tanks exploded, which was put out. Due to the fact that a plastic warehouse may have also caught fire, a hazmat team is on the scene to check for any chemicals in the air. KTHV-TV CBS 11 LITTLE ROCK Driver dies after hitting Florida firefighter with pickup truck; Firefighter in critical condition A man is dead after he crashed his pickup truck into two fire trucks, hit a firefighter and finally collided with a fire hydrant. And authorities say they have no idea why he did it. It all started around 3 a.m. Wednesday when first responders got the call of a crash along U.S. 19 at Innisbrook Drive. A sedan had rear-ended another car at the traffic light. Palm Harbor Fire Rescue crews responded to this crash to help the drivers, who both had minor injuries. Two fire trucks blocked the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 as crews worked the crash. A pickup truck driving northbound then collided with both fire trucks, one after the other, for an "unknown reason." After hitting both trucks, the driver continued driving and hit a firefighter who was standing near the two cars from the first crash. After hitting her, the pickup rotated to the outside shoulder and collided with a fire hydrant. WTSP-TV CBS 10 ST. PETERSBURG Squishy robots give Kansas firefighters remote insight during emergencies VIDEO: The Olathe Fire Department is testing out new technology that could help keep firefighters safe. Thanks to a new partnership with Squishy Robotics, the department now has access to three new tensegrity robots that can be used to prevent exposure to hazardous chemicals. The six-month pilot program will allow firefighters to get hands-on experience operating the new technology. Using a drone, firefighters can easily drop the Squishy Robot into spaces it would be unsafe to send a person. Squishy Robots are made of flexible materials that allow it to be dropped from extreme heights. The built-in camera gives a 360 view of an active emergency that first responders can view using a laptop from a distance. Captain Mike Hall with the Olathe Fire Department said the goal is to keep first residents and firefighters safe while collecting real-time information on an active emergency. WDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY Wisconsin fire station climbs ladder to State Register of Historic Places PHOTOS: La Crosse Fire Station No. 5 has another claim to fame, in addition to being the last station in the city to use horse brigades: It's now listed on the State Register of Historic Places. The Wisconsin Historical Society, which bestowed the distinction on the station last month, cements the building's heritage as the last surviving firehouse in the city, although it's no longer used as a fire station. The two-story brick structure was built in 1895, according to La Crosse Public Library Archives. Two large doors served as the entry to the large apparatus bay room, where firefighting equipment was housed. The second story originally contained a club room, offices and a dormitory. A rear addition contained stables for the horses and a hayloft. Fire Station No. 5 was built just as La Crosse was transitioning from volunteer fire companies to a professional, paid, city-run fire department, according to the historical society.
