Man seen putting Molotov cocktail and 'threatening note' inside Travis County Democratic Party headquarters, investigators say Arson investigators are searching for a man who placed a molotov cocktail and a "threatening note" inside the Travis County Democratic Party headquarters in Downtown Austin in the early morning hours Wednesday. A small fire broke out just after 2:15 a.m. at the headquarters located at 1311 E. Sixth St., and employees in the neighboring businesses called 911 and put out the flames with a fire hydrant. Brandon Jennings, an arson investigator at the Austin Fire Department, said at a press conference later in the morning that video from the surveillance cameras showed a man mulling around the building before he threw what appeared to be a rock at the window on the front door. The man is then reportedly seen coming back into view with a Molotov cocktail that he placed inside the door. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Kirby: Emergency Services District 11 to become own paid fire department For decades, residents in Emergency Services District 11 depended on the city of Kirby for its fire and emergency coverage. That all changes Sept. 29, when the ESD 11 becomes its own paid fire department. John True, president of the ESD 11 board, said 8 a.m. Sept. 29 signifies a new moment in the ESD's history. "The key to the whole thing is by having our own people, it's all about response time, cutting down on response time," True said. "We built it and they manned it, until (now), when we take over. Our guys moved into the station and will be the firefighters to answer the call." ESD 11 incorporates a 6.5 square mile area of homes largely between FM 78 and Interstate 10, from Walzem Road to Foster Road and including homes in the Candlewood and Congressional Avenue areas. MYSANANTONIO.COM Tyler ISD students get hands-on firefighting experience in high school East Texas students will get a chance to get hands-on firefighting experience while in high school. The TJC Fire Academy was at Tyler ISD's Career and Technology Center for a dual training on Tuesday. The facilities they regularly do training at was being occupied by the East Texas State Fair. "I've been wanting to be a firefighter since I was little. My mom has been really supportive towards my decisions", said Giovanna Gallegos, a current student at Tyler ISD. These students will get hands-on training and if they continue to stay in the program for two full years, they can graduate with a firefighter certificate. "The high school students are at the point of learning the safety part", said Mike Maker, an instructor at Tyler ISD. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Plainview Fire Department joined by city leaders to break ground on new station The Plainview Fire Department was joined by city leaders Tuesday to break ground on what will become the new Station 2. New Fire Chief Bobby Gipson, who has served the department for 32 years, said it's been at least 20 years since a new station was built. The "newest" one is Station 3, which is located at 3405 SW Third Street, and it was built in 2000. The new station will be on a piece of land at the corner of Yonkers St. and Dimmitt Highway. While the groundbreaking was ceremonial, Mayor Charles Starnes said passersby could start seeing construction crews working at the site as soon as by the end of the week. The project has been a long time coming, he said. Plainview voters approved a $5,324,000 bond to relocate the fire station in the November 2017 election, which included five other bonds. MY PLAINVIEW Hero El Paso Firefighters Cut Kitten Out Of A Pipe VIDEO: There is nothing cuter than a kitten but they do tend to get into spaces that they shouldn't. The El Paso Fire Department had to rescue a kitten that got into a section of pipe Monday night and the poor little beast looked like he was a little worse for the wear when he was set free. According to KVIA, the little kitten got stuck in the pipe and had to be extracted using not only really scary power tools to cut him/her out of the section of pipe it was stuck in, but they also clearly tried to use liquid dish soap as lubricant to get him/her free from the pipe. The end of the video when the little kitty was taken out of the pipe is cute and heartbreaking at the same time, but when you realize he/she only looks like that because of the dish soap it seems ok. If you have a kitten make sure that your house is secure enough to keep them from having to be cut out of a pipe. KSII-FM 93.1 EL PASO Temple firefighters contain attic fire, save home from further damage Temple firefighters contained a fire at a home at Birdcreek Dr. and Brooklawn Dr. late Tuesday night. There were two people home at the time of the fire. Both were able to evacuate with no injuries. Temple Fire and Rescue used eight firetrucks, and 21 personnel to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Karen Bureker didn't know whether she wanted to have children when she first became a firefighter paramedic nearly 20 years ago. But after getting married, Bureker and her husband decided to start a family. It was during her first pregnancy, after six years on the job, that Bureker realized just how difficult the transition from firefighter to mother would be while rising through the ranks of her male-dominated profession. "It's really a great job to be a mom, but it's a really hard job," she said. "My kids, as they get older, are starting to understand some of the risks that we take. But they love having their mom be a firefighter." Bureker, 44, is part of a rare sorority. Earlier this month, she became the first female fire captain at Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue near Portland, where she started her career some 19 years ago. NBC NEWS The ties that bind: Three new FDNY members following in footsteps of fathers killed on the job The trio were just kids 20 years ago when their FDNY fathers died: Two during the 9/11 terrorist attack, and the third only a few days earlier while on the job. Sons Jonathan Otten, Gary Watson and Andrew Gorumba will proudly join the Class of 2021 in graduating Wednesday from the FDNY Fire Academy, with each inspired by their heroic dads and determined to follow in their footsteps as members of the department that embraced all three in the dark days after their fathers passed away. "Since I came into the academy, I've done this for him," said namesake son Gary Watson, 28. "He helped me push through on the tough days. For the rest of my career, I'll be doing this for him, to make him proud." Watson and Otten, also 28, are the 9/11 legacies joining the department, while Gorumba's dad died Aug. 28, 2001, from a heart attack while battling a three-alarm blaze at a Staten Island auto body shop. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE California fire department struggles to fill shifts because exhausted firefighters are turning down overtime Some of our county's biggest wildfires started in October, but as we head into this potentially dangerous time, local fire departments are struggling to fill shifts. Exhausted firefighters are turning down overtime. This past weekend, an engine company at Fire Station 20 was shut down for 24 hours. The reason? A lack of staffing. And it's not just a problem here in the city of San Diego, they're experiencing this across the county and the rest of the state. "Shutting down an engine company is our absolute last resort," said San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell. He added that he can't remember the last time an engine shut down because the department didn't have enough bodies. "It really is frustrating because there's no perfect solution here," Stowell said. KFMB-TV CBS/CW 8 SAN DIEGO On the Road to Healing: Connecticut Fire Chief Running Boston Marathon With the steady rhythm of a nice long run, Robert Duval of Wauregan finds peace. "I just go out and it just allows me to, like, unravel a lot of things," he said. And in his four decades in the fire service, the chief of Atwood Hose Fire Company and president of the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association has seen a lot of things. As an investigator for the National Fire Protection Association, Duval has personally responded to some the worst tragedies in the nation. "We see stuff that we wouldn't wish on anybody," he said. "Sometimes it's a one-off incident. And sometimes it's compounded over time, and you need to take care of your mental health, too." In 2003, Duval was called to the Station Nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island, a horrific fire that claimed 100 lives and injured hundreds more.
