From podcasts like Dolly Parton’s America and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, to the MalalaFund newsletter, to Adidas Originals “Donald Glover Presents” and the 30for30 Podcast—as well as this year’s Special Achievement Winners like Avi Schiffmann, Miley Cyrus, D-Nice, Kristen Bell, Swizz Beatz + Timbaland, and more, these Webby Winners truly represent the best of the Internet. Meet this year’s Special Achievement Winners—those using the Internet to combat the pandemic’s impact—and experience Webbys From Home today at 3pm ET!
We’re recognizing individuals and tools using their platform to entertain, including Webby Artist of the Year D-Nice for creating #ClubQuarantine DJ sets on Instagram Live, Kristen Bell for helping children understand the pandemic, Some Good News with John Krasinski for highlighting positive stories from around the world, Miley Cyrus for Bright Minded: Live with Miley and hosting conversations focused on maintaining holistic health, Massimo Bottura for “Kitchen Quarantine” inspiring home cooking and uplifting spirits, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland for the Verzuz battles on Instagram Live celebrating legendary songwriters and producers, and Webby Breakout of the Year Housepartyfor keeping people connected even when they are physically apart.
Watchdogs Keeping Us Informed
Webby Person of the Year, Avi Schiffmann (pictured) receives this honor for launching the first tracking database of COVID-19, ncov2019.live. Researcher and Webby Special Achievement honoree Trevor Bedford founded Nextstrain.org, to track how the disease’s genetic codes are mutating, and what that means for vaccine development. Webby Voice of the Year The Daily receives this honor for providing critical coverage of the pandemic, while Google Classroom will accept a Webby Special Achievement honor for keeping young students learning, and connected.
Combatting COVID-19's Impact
In a special moment, The Webbys is awarding Webby Special Achievement honor to the remarkable organizations and initiatives that rose to the occasion and are using the Internet in response to the impact of COVID-19, including Invisible Hands (founders pictured above) and Shopping Angels, organizations delivering essentials to the most vulnerable,The Black Fairy Godmother an activist and organizer helping women impacted by the pandemic, Swab Squad, a group of healthcare professionals who are serving their communities while bringing joy to the Internet, and Dr. Tatiana Prowell of Johns Hopkins University who used her reach to organize a blood drive and inspired COVID-19 survivors to donate their plasma to those fighting to recover.
