Rather than responding to the horrific war in Ukraine or working to pass an appropriations bill ahead of government funding running out next week, the Senate instead took up the Women’s Health Protection Act for a vote on Monday. This bill is the most pro-abortion bill to have ever passed the House of Representatives, and we are grateful that it failed in the Senate. After that vote, attention turned to President Biden’s first State of the Union address on Tuesday. The beginning of the speech was dominated by the war in Ukraine and featured broad bipartisan support for the people of Ukraine and their remarkable courage. Though the president did put forward some areas in which the two parties could work together on domestic issues such as immigration reform, fighting the opioid epidemic, and supporting veterans, he also focused on extreme and divisive policies such as the harmful Equality Act and protecting abortion access.
