Where is the global economy headed?
This week, business leaders, politicians, and journalists are gathering in Davos for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. Front of mind for those convening in Switzerland will be the massive changes taking place across the global economic landscape. The COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the rising tide of authoritarian populism have exposed many of the key assumptions and ideas that guided economic policy for decades as deeply problematic. As Rana Foroohar observed in a recent episode of “The Foreign Affairs Interview,” “all the things that made conventional neoliberal globalization possible—cheap capital, cheap energy, cheap labor—all those things are breaking apart.” But it is far from certain what new ideas will replace the old paradigms. In the meantime, how can the world tame inflation without triggering a recession? Is it possible to grow prosperity globally without exacerbating inequality at the national level? How is new technology going to disrupt manufacturing and supply chains? The conversation about what comes next will influence how people live and work across the globe—and it is a debate playing out in the pages of Foreign Affairs. We’ve compiled some of the best pieces on the status of the global economy and the forces that will shape it in the years to come. Start reading below.
