The Best Courses on the PGA Tour There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a tour event beyond its architectural merits. What makes a great golf course—when evaluating it on aspects of the design—and what makes a venue a great one for a tournament are two separate things. So when we talk about the quality of the design, we’re not necessarily knocking the golf course itself—although a great course usually creates a great theater for a tournament. That said, for the most part, the PGA Tour does travel to some of the country’s best designs. This year, all three major championships contested in the United States will be hosted by courses ranked inside the top 20 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Courses. In fact, of the 38 tour events on the 2022-’23 PGA Tour schedule, 17 of them are ranked on one of Golf Digest’s national rankings, and most layouts are on our Best in State rankings. In endeavoring to rank the courses on the PGA Tour schedule based on design characteristics, we utilized our expert course panelists—who evaluate courses based on seven scoring criteria, which range from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics—to help determine our most recent ranking. The results elicited quite a bit of feedback on social media. See what you think by hitting the button below, and let us know where you disagree with our list. |
