The Black Volkswagen From Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Hilarious, Heroic, Human Dog By Eser Yilmaz In times of joy, all of us wished we possessed a tail we could wag. ~W.H. Auden Floyd started to wag his tail when he saw the black Volkswagen approach us. He knew the drill; he'd seen it play out pretty much the same way every week. Some nights, Denny's bedsheets would remain untouched, and the next day we'd drive to the grocery store. We'd park in the same spot and wait. While I'd check my e-mails or browse the Web on my phone, Floyd would watch the cars drive in and out of the parking lot until the black Volkswagen parked next to us. Then, he'd see Denny emerge from the black car and watch him hug the man who drove it. After listening to our conversation, he'd get to lick Denny's face until we pulled into our driveway. Floyd's tail thumped against the window faster and faster on that breezy March evening. He had no idea that our routine was about to change.
