| It was time to get ready to go but Hank Kunneman’s wife, Brenda, had already claimed the singular hotel room mirror. Needing to stay on schedule and prepare for his pastoral speaking engagement, Hank decided to blow-dry his hair without the help of his reflection. The result was his wife bursting into laughter.
As it turned out, Hank had accidentally given himself a pompadour. He chuckled at his misstep, but then an idea came to mind. The wild look gave Hank a concept for a character, one he quickly sketched out before heading to the event.
With the help of illustrator Norris Hall, Hank’s wild-haired hero became Captain Zepto, whose galactic quests are told in beloved comic books. Now, more than 20 years after the hotel hair-dryer incident, Hank is launching an animated version of the comic.
Hank told CT that the show feels like nothing less than an “assignment from God: to give families on the earth wholesome, hilarious cartoons with identifiable characters.”
While the show itself tells a compelling tale, the hotel room is also worth remembering. The mistakes that happen amidst the mundane won’t always lead to a sense of mission or motivation to do something great. But when they do, may they remind us of the God who uses all types of circumstances—even silly ones—to set dreams in our hearts. |
