Are we in a recession or not? Experts have been debating what’s going on after figures released last week showed that while the U.S. economy shrank for the second straight quarter, job growth continues to be strong. Of course, things are falling along political lines – Republicans say we are, Democrats say we’re not. Does everything have to be about politics? Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week: #1. Daryl Cagle, Cagle.com

Climate change was on the mind of cartoonists last week after much of the country was scorched by a record-breaking heat wave. Things have gotten so hot in Europe that Spain rolled out a new heat wave ranking system and the world’s first named heat wave – Zoe. With consumers still impacted by rising prices, a few of our most reprinted cartoons this week centered on inflation and the possibility the U.S. could already be experiencing a recession. And more than two years after the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 is still showing up in cartoons. Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week: #1 Chris Weyant took the #1 most reprinted spot! #2 Jeff Koterba placed 2nd. Here’s #2! #3 Rick McKee took third place! #4 Pat Bagley nabbed 4th place. #5 Dick Wright claims the five-spot. #6 Rick McKee landed in sixth place. #7 Jeff Koterba nabs seventh place. #8 Gary McCoy took 8th place. #9 Rivers takes 9th place! #10 Dick Wright comes in at number ten. Here’s an interesting exchange I just had with an editor at the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette in Indiana, about this Dick Wright cartoon. On Jul 25, 2022, at 7:31 AM I understand your willingness to accommodate all viewpoints, so I have long bit my tongue at the blatant distortions of Dick Wright and his ilk. But when he crosses the line into outright lies, then it’s time for me to speak up and you to act. The attached cartoon is demonstrably false – and you know it. What do you intend to do about it? Keith Elchert The Journal Gazette —- Dear Keith, We sometimes get complaints from editors who object to cartoons they don’t choose to run; like you, they are objecting to our making the cartoons available to other editors who might choose to run them. In almost all cases, these complaints come from conservative editors demanding that we kill liberal cartoons –so your complaint is unusual. We observe that moderate and liberal editors often run conservative cartoons, wanting to present both sides of issues. Conservative editors tend not to run both sides. By providing a full range of views across the political spectrum, we present conservative editors with many great cartoon choices that they wouldn’t otherwise consider, and sometimes a few liberal cartoons sneak through onto conservative editorial pages. We sometimes kill conservative cartoons, that fall into the spectrum of mainstream political discussion, because we find them offensive and wrong. Examples are cartoons that are transphobic, cartoons accusing Dominion Voting Systems of fraud and cartoons promoting the use of Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID. Many conservative cartoons promote ideas that are arguably harmful to society, like climate change denial, which we have chosen not to kill. I personally find the conservative cartoons opposing abortion rights offensive, but we also allow these. I have chosen not to kill the Dick Wright cartoon that you complained about. Although it is “demonstrably false” to claim that Biden stole the election, the cartoon depicts Republican elephants complaining that Biden stole the election; this is something we see many Republicans continually complaining about and a large percentage of them hold this false view, so the cartoon depicts a reality. Although the cartoon can be read as promoting “The Big Lie,” it is not the role of editorial cartoonists to convey facts and our editorial decisions are weighed on a different scale than the work of other journalists. I’m sorry to trouble you with this cartoon that I expect will not be running in the Journal Gazette. We really appreciate the Journal Gazette as a subscriber to our service! Best, Daryl CagleCartoons.com The editor, Keith Elchert, wrote a friendly response. (Sometimes the responses from conservatives are not so friendly.) Thank you, Daryl, for taking the time to address my complaint more fully. I very much appreciate that. And I understand and respect your reasoning. My reactions to some cartoons tend to be visceral (I imagine I’m not alone in that), but this was one that I thought went further than most. Having said that, I am grateful for your efforts to ensure balance and a diversity of viewpoints. I’m happy to have contributed to the blog discussion in some small way. Depending on what poll you read, nearly two-thirds of the country doesn’t approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president. Crippling inflation, more COVID variants and high gas prices are just some of the issues cartoonists linked to our 46th president and his administration this week. Editors also liked cartoons about the new photos from the James Webb Space Telescope, which offer a celestial perspective to all the squabbling and bickering in Washington. Congratulations to Kevin Siers for the #1 cartoon, and kudos to Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba for nabbing two cartoons each in the Top Ten. Republicans versus Democrats. City residents versus country folk. Fox News versus MSNBC. America’s widening divisions were highlighted by the nation’s top cartoonists during the July 4th holiday, with little hope we’ll unite anytime soon. At least the fireworks were pretty. Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week: #1 Rivers took the #1 most reprinted spot and has two cartoons in the Top Ten. #2 Jeff Koterba took second place, also his first of two in the list! #3 Dave Granlund took third place! #4 Dick Wright nabbed 4th place. #5 Rivers claims the five-spot with a second cartoon in the Top Ten. #6 Bruce Plante landed in sixth place with his first of two cartoons in the Top Ten. #7 Dave Whamond nabs seventh place. #8 Monte Wolverton took 8th place. #9 Bruce Plante takes 9th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten! #10 John Darkow comes in at number ten — remember, that doesn’t mean “last place” it means “tenth place”, of over 100 cartoons we syndicated in the past week. Things are hot right now across the United States, and I’m not just talking about the weather. Cartoonists responded to a host of issues this week, from the explosive January 6 committee hearings to the continued high prices we’re paying for just about everything. If that weren’t enough, there’s the looming threat of a recession off in the horizon, just in time for the midterm elections. Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week: #1 Chris Weyant took the #1 most reprinted spot. #2 Dave Whamond took second place, also his first of two in the list! #3 Jeff Koterba took third place! #4 Rick McKee nabbed 4th place. #5 John Darkow claims the five-spot. #6 Dave Granlund landed in sixth. #7 Randall Enos nabs seventh place. #8 RJ Matson took 8th place. #9 Dick Wright takes 9th place! #10 Guy Parson’s number ten cartoon bridges the gap between weeks, coming in at number five last week. This cartoon was reprinted more than the other nine cartoons on the list this week. Our weekly Top Ten is now a newspaper column! Record gas prices, continued inflation, flight cancellations… unfortunately, bad news makes for good editorial cartoons. Cartoonists remain focused on the continued economic woes Americans face, whether it’s at the gas station or the airport. Editor’s loved John Darkow’s police lineup of gas pumps, which seems appropriate given how long we’ve been forced to endure record high prices. Inflation continues to be a dominant issue for the nation’s top editorial cartoonists, personified by the persistently high price of gas at the pump. The declines in the stock market this week certainly didn’t quiet many concerns over a rocky economic picture for many Americans. There is also continued interest in cartoons focused on the impact of school shootings on both kids and teachers. Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week: #1 John Darkow took the #1 most reprinted spot. #2 Pat Bagley took second place! #3 Daryl Cagle (me) took third place! #4 Jeff Koterba nabbed 4th place with his first of two cartoons on the list. #5 Dick Wright claims the five-spot with his first of two cartoons in the Top Ten. #6 Dave Whamond came in sixth with his second cartoon in the Top Ten. #7 Bob Englehart nabs seventh place. #8 Dave Granlund took 8th place. #9 Jeff Koterba takes 9th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten! #10 Dick Wright wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon on the list.
